I am very happy I got in to see her. my knees feel better. she did not recommend surgery at this time. apparently you cannot book in the future when you are doing pretty well today . thank you Dr. Mathis for giving me so much of your time today I felt good about seeing you . I've had my severe injuries treated for decades, and have never been told this. I came for pain relief treatment. I'd also booked an hour long assessment for knees on which I'm waiting for replacements. Joy spent 20 rushed minutes, moving so fast she added to my pain. ReBalance then billed me for the full hour. When I called this overbilling to their attention, they made up the most ridiculous excuse, saying this is to my financial benefit. They're refusing to account for their overbilling, which tells me it isn't an oversight. Their email response is below. Tell me how this is legal?: "Our physiotherapy appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes; however, they may be billed as a 60-minute treatment for insurance purposes. This is done to help patients receive the greatest benefit from their available coverage, as shorter appointment billing can sometimes be reimbursed at a lower percentage and result in a higher out-of-pocket cost for the patient. We completely understand how this could have been confusing if it was not clearly explained beforehand, and we apologize for any misunderstanding this may have caused. Thank you for your understanding, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or if there is anything else we can assist you with." Dr Winston proceeded to inject my trigeminal nerve with a freezing agent without discussing it with me other than a cursory few comments. He had the syringe ready before he even saw me based on his student's interpretation of my history. This was not informed consent, which I didn't have. In 1980, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled, in the landmark case of Reibl v. Hughes, that patients should be told what the doctor intends to do, as well as what the significant material risks are, and anything else that a reasonable person in that patient's condition would want to be told. I suffered extreme pain and permanent damage to my nerve and temporal mandibular joint. Beware of Dr Winston and Shelbourne Physiotherapy for their association with a doctor who doesn't believe in informed consent. This was the worst medical trauma I've ever experienced.

Dr. Lam looked beyond just where I was feeling pain and evaluated my posture, structure, movement and Xray . He used cutting edge assessment tools and show exactly where the cause of my issue is. He explained what he found and why he recommended a specific treatment plan. After a few months of rehab, I start to feel I have better control to my problem, able to move easier, less frequent pain symptoms and it lasts. I was also given corrective exercises and traction to perform at home to stay on top with my spinal health routine.

So I said "I'll try to come because I do not want to be charged for nothing". I show up and waited for 12 minutes and notified by front desk that they recieved my voicemail last night cancelling my appointment. This only means voicemails are pointless while in fact they've called me 2 mins later last night. Voicemail should have been deleted. So in short they've cancelled me, so shall we apply cancellation fee as well as a client? I get it when a short notice cancellation fee will be applied. But their communication shows how they recieved voicemails should have been reviewed and deleted so others will not be getting informations that was already dealth with. Getting ready and showing up early expecting to have your appointment ready as well. There's no excuse of that effort showing up to your appointment but a disappointment! I suggest a clearer transfer of communication be more observable than being more concern on short notice cancellation policy.

Physiotherapist Rachel Rubin-Sarganis has on two occasions surprised me by asking me to allow a…read moretrainee into my private sessions, with no advance notice. They were both standing in front of the door of the treatment room, and to say "no" would be very awkward. I was not informed this was a training facility, and not asked in advance if I would consent to his presence in my treatment. The first time (May 2nd/2025) I allowed it, but the second time (May 15th/2025), I said no. I was put in a physical position to have to say it to both of them in the moment. I allowed it the first time because I desperately needed pain relief, was surprised, and was afraid refusing the trainee would negatively impact my session. My pain escalated just from the stress of the interaction. On the second occasion (May 15th) When Ms. RS and I got in the room, I said that I would have liked to have been informed and asked in advance. I have been in trainee sessions with other practitioners, but was always part of an informed consent process. I also reminded her that I am in regular physiotherapy as a survivor of a vicious assault. This has left me permanently disabled, and in severe chronic pain. I expect her to be trauma informed sufficiently to understand not to spring surprises on clients. And to understand the effect this might have on a survivor. I have a spinal crush injury, nearly died from this experience, and my life has been severely impacted in every aspect. I even need a task trained service animal. First, she sat across from me and apologized. I started to accept her apology, then she interrupted me to falsely claim that in the first instance, she had taken me aside in advance to ask for consent. I told her that I was about to accept her apology. But now that she had rescinded it to lie and gaslight me, I didn't want the session. She kept touching me, and I told her to stop. I was shaking, and told her so. I stood up, and said I was leaving. She could have easily just let me get past. Instead, she stood up, planted herself in front of me, and kept backing up to block me from getting to the door. She again put her hands up, trying to touch my arms and shoulder. I had to tell her, "Stop blocking me," before she'd move. She again lied, saying she wasn't blocking me, while she was in the act of doing so. We had been on the long end of the room, and she backed up to block me four steps to the door on the other end. Her trainee was right on the other side of the door, and likely heard our interaction. I was further humiliated and hurt. I requested and received a refund. I was still shaking. To have what seemed like a gentle and caring healthcare practitioner turn into an abuser, was shocking. It was humiliating and very distressing. I then cancelled future appointments with her and with the counsellor with whom I had an appointment. Ironically, my counselling was to be about being violated by authority figures. I cannot trust this clinic for their services. I had difficulty driving home, and nearly got into an accident. It is now 2 1/2 hours later, and I'm still shaking and unable to eat. I need regular physical therapy, but it will be a while before I feel safe to book as session anywhere. I'll have to start my research over, then repeat the painful, stressful and expensive initial assessment elsewhere. I have filed a complaint with Ms. Rubin-Sarganis' professional association. She doesn't even have the regular courtesy most people exhibit when asking if they can bring an extra person for dinner, let alone to a private healthcare session.

However one thing you should know if planning to come here, is that they regularly increase their rates - going from $110 to $118 to $125 per hour for massage services in less than the 18 months I've been coming here. Now keep in mind, I understand inflation, increased costs, etc... So its not the price increases I have as much issue with (although the frequency seems extreme especially given the fact my insurance coverage hasn't increased in that time)... My main issue is the fact that they increase their prices with ZERO communication being sent out. So one month the price is one thing and then you come in for another scheduled appointment and suddenly they start charging you a higher rate without a word of mention. It wasn't until after I tapped my card for payment that I noticed the increase. In what world is it not standard practice to inform customers - especially if they have services booked - that the prices are increasing? A simple email would solve this problem but instead they just assume all is well and leave it to the admins at the front desk who have to deal with explaining it after the fact? Lucky for this place I like my current massage therapist - because their ethical business administration practices are seriously lacking.

She listens to you, then listens to your body as she works it. For example, my wife and I had both very different needs and we both got very different but still amazing massages. +Experienced - If I recall correctly, she used to do massage for the entire UVic row team, and then eventually a wrestling team. Sheril is armed with hands that could probably kill, but you softies out there, don't be discouraged. As she says, "I like to work just before the 'u' in 'ouch'".
