After those six payments, North American estimated my projected lifetime income at only $19,000 per year. If we surrendered, there would be over $30, 000 in surrender fees. Throughout this period, whenever we contacted Andre Zaal for clarification or assistance, he repeatedly told us to call North American ourselves and offered no support regarding the policy he sold us. At the time of purchase, I was 37 years old, a stay‑at‑home mother, and the policy included $2.2 million in life insurance coverage. After doing my own research, I learned that a large portion of our contributions were going toward insurance costs and management fees, which explained the low account value. I also learned that agents earn higher commissions when clients purchase larger insurance components. Based on our experience, our interests were not prioritized.
