Horses were saddled and ready to mount for the first scheduled appointment of the day. It was well…read morethought out and matched horses for riders ability and ages. Our family of 6 went. We had two wranglers looking out for our group. That was perfect. One was in lead, one was last horse. I felt it was very professionally ran. The horses were in great shape despite the hot weather. The equipment was in good shape. We always felt we were in a controlled, knowledgeable environment. After hour ride they helped everyone individually dismount and led horse to water. It's a cute set-up and barn and stables were very nice. PS It was my 70th grandma birthday party starting there before the village. They made it fun and extra special.

When we left our…read morehouse this afternoon (in Layton) it was sunny and warm, but the weather quickly changed while we were on our way to SLC. By the time we got to the barn, the rain had stopped and the weather was perfect. We were happy to have cloud coverage during our ride. When we entered the barn, we signed some waivers and then we went around the side of the barn to be given a horse. They make sure you and the horse will be a good fit (horses have different personalities just like people). Mine was notorious for stopping and snacking (did they give me my spirit animal?), but he was such a sweetheart on the trail. He listened when I pulled his reins and was such a good horse. While we were riding the trail, we saw so many deer. I don't think I've seen so many deer in one sitting. The horses can get spooked by the deer, but luckily no one got spooked. Right as we got to the top of the hill, the storm behind us caught up. At first it was sprinkling...no big deal. Some of the horses didn't like rain in their faces, so they'd turn to the side. We just had to pull their reins a little to keep them going. As we started to slightly descend, my husband's horse was NOT having it. It wasn't too happy about the rain and didn't want to keep going. The trail guides were great with talking him through how to get her calmed down and moving again (not that she was acting crazy or anything, she just wasn't having the rain and didn't want to listen). The rain only got worse. It started coming down so hard that it was stinging my ears. At this point we all had to stop and have our horses face away from the rain because a lot of the horses didn't want to move. We stood there for a few minutes until more help arrived. The guides hopped off of their horses and helped those who needed some extra help with their horses. My husband's was definitely one of them (we call her Diva now). The rain calmed down once we were close to the end of the trail ride. Once we made it back to the barn, the trail guides helped us off our horses and then we headed home. We were absolutely drenched and had to use the heater on our way home. We were so drenched that we were pouring water out of our shoes when we took them off. It was absolutely crazy and never rains that much usually, but I swear my husband and I bring the rain everywhere we go. We seriously had such a great time, even while getting rained on! We would definitely do this trail ride again. It was a fantastic experience that we'll never forget.

Terrible and very unsafe. Their passive braking system which they told us would, "catch you like a…read morebaby", failed and I broke my nose. Had a severe concussion and tour ligaments in my knee. They didn't even have ice or any first aid kit available on the platform either after my accident. They ended up giving me a popsicle to hold on my head until ambulance and fire truck arrived. My family has been enjoying the beautiful experience of rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon with CRATE since 1972, coming up on 50 years next year since my father's first trip. From the extremely friendly and professional communication with the McKays at the CRATE main office to the expansive knowledge and friendliness of the guides on the trips, everyone I have done the 8 day trip with is overwhelmed with gratitude and adamantly impressed with the service, knowledge and overall execution of the trip... even the most seasoned explorers and adventure seekers I know. I simply can't say enough about how special this trip is, but I think a large majority of that is because of their company, staff and hands-on, personal touch from beginning to end.

It's starting to get way too hot in the valley, so I've been trying to escape up into the cooler…read moremountain temperatures for the past couple of weeks. What a stunning hike this was! We started the hike from a less populated trail starting near Solitude, but there's another, more popular trail that goes to this same viewpoint. I believe the route we took was called the Beaver Pond trail from Solitude. The wildflowers are starting to come out and the views are absolutely stunning. The lake itself was perfectly still and reflecting the beautiful aspens. We came here on a Friday night and lots of people were backpacking here and setting up camp around the lake. What a beautiful place to backpack, and a short little backpacking trip! I would definitely come back to backpack this sometime. The temperature was perfect, although it was a little bit buggy so bug spray was necessary. We even ended up needing sweatshirts on the way down. Our trail was about 4.2 miles RT, but the regular Willow Lake/Willow Heights trail is 2.5-2.8 miles RT. Definitely worth checking out right now as the wildflowers come out!

Do you ever feel like you just need to spend some time outdoors? Some might call it woo woo, but…read morewith the cooler temperatures, I have not been out on as many adventures as usual, and my spirit definitely required a reconnection with nature. It hit me acutely about a week back, and, while I have my trusty standard hikes (I swear I visit Bell's Canyon near weekly!), I wanted to go somewhere new. Willow Heights popped up while searching Alltrails in an attempt to locate a different hike in the same area. The one I'd originally had in mind didn't feature a lake, so Willow Heights quickly won over my interest. At just over two miles, it is a great option for those seeking a quick hike. Located a ways up the canyon, and though not super well marked, if you utilize GPS and watch for cars parked along the road, it is not too difficult to spot. There is a small etched boulder that serves as the trail marker. The path starts with some incline, but nothing too challenging. There are aspens EVERYWHERE, and, in the early morning light, their bare branches and trunks appeared so starkly white against the blue sky. It was incredibly striking! As elevation is gained, more pines start to sprout up, though with no loss of aspens. We did not see any, but moose are said to be common hiking companions. Eventually, you will reach a large open field (I imagined it full of wildflowers mid-summer), and then the trail breaks off into a wide loop around the water. It's a small lake, but it's still a lake, so I'll take it, even frozen, as it was at this time. I found a raised spot on the west side, and settled in to enjoy the perfect silence and view of surrounding snow-topped mountains. And speaking of snow, in November, there were spots with plenty, though more ice than anything else. We brought crampons, but didn't bother to use them as the bottom of the trail was entirely clear, and my hands were too frozen to maneuver crampons over my boots once we reached the more slippery spots. It was okay without, but further into the winter you will certainly want 'em. There were also areas that, with several inch deep shoe prints, clearly get pretty darn muddy once warmed by the sun. It was cold enough that the dirt was frozen for us. Because Big Cottonwood is a watershed, dogs and swimming are prohibited. Camping is allowed, but I don't think fires are (though we saw what was very clearly a fire pit near the lake). I could see this being a popular hike during other seasons, though, on a cold Sunday morning, we only happened upon one other group right as we exited the trail.
