We hired Leo of Solidworks Remodeling for an extensive and complex backyard renovation in Palos Verdes Estates. He was referred by a friend who had used him several times, which we took as a significant positive. During the selection process, we were impressed. Leo came to our initial meetings well prepared with full-size printed plans and demonstrated strong attention to detail. His estimate was comprehensive and clearly itemized, which gave us confidence that he understood the scope and complexity of the project. Ultimately, the project was completed and the backyard looks nice. We frequently use and enjoy the space. However, the construction process was far more difficult and significantly longer than expected, and portions of the finished product do not reflect the original design intent. The most consistent issue throughout the build was oversight and subcontractor management. Leo works exclusively with subcontractors, which initially felt like a positive because we were told it would create accountability. In practice, we experienced the opposite. When progress stalled or workmanship fell short, we felt a lack of willingness to apply pressure to the sub. One of the clearest examples was the retaining walls. The original design called for board-formed concrete as an architectural feature. Early on, Leo strongly recommended stucco instead, suggesting it would be cleaner and more predictable. We made it clear that we wanted to remain true to the board-formed concrete design. He later confirmed that he could execute the board-formed walls as designed. Unfortunately, the finished product fell short. The quality of the concrete work did not meet expectations, and because of the condition of the walls, we ultimately chose to stucco over them. While the stucco solution is clean and functional, it was not what was designed and represents a meaningful deviation from the original vision. Site presence was also more limited than we anticipated for a project of this scale. There were periods where little progress was made, including a week during which no meaningful work occurred while we were out of town. For a complex backyard build involving structural walls, a pool, hardscape, and multiple trades, more consistent onsite supervision would have made a significant difference. Scheduling and communication added to the frustration. The contract specified that a weekly schedule of operations would be provided outlining upcoming work. In reality, this was not delivered consistently. We had to request it multiple times, and even then it would be provided sporadically -- one week but not the next. The lack of a reliable schedule made planning difficult and contributed to the extended timeline. Communication was largely handled by text and phone calls. While that may work for smaller projects, on a complex build involving an independent designer and multiple vendors, clearer written documentation was needed. In one case, material quantity revisions were not incorporated properly due to informal communication, resulting in ordering discrepancies. There was also a tendency to deflect responsibility when coordination issues arose rather than proactively resolving them. Additionally, in situations where we were reaching out to third-party vendors, he inserted himself into the communication. This created confusion and, at times, made coordination more complicated than necessary. Where I believe Leo may be a good fit is for smaller, more straightforward renovations -- kitchens, bathrooms, or simpler backyard projects -- especially if he is managing both design and construction. His upfront planning and estimating process are strengths. However, for larger, more complex projects requiring consistent supervision, structured scheduling, and tight coordination with outside designers, our experience suggests setting very clear expectations from the outset. In the end, we have a finished backyard that we enjoy, but the path to get there was more difficult and drawn out than it needed to be. Leo and his guys did an impeccable job on our Azek composite boardwalk and deck. I'm someone who is OCD very attentive to details (to put it lightly). I was blown away by the final result. Leo's guys cut every piece of composite wood perfectly. Our deck extends to a diagonal garden wall that made it very challenging to cut and align the Azek material. They were meticulous every step of the way. We were so happy with Leo that he ended up doing the wood work on our pergola. His men took two days to carefully cut, sand, and stain the red mangaris wood. We have an irregular shaped pergola so it was a lot of work for them. They did a fantastic job, and we couldn't be happier. I'm glad we met Leo and will definitely use him again for future projects. As first-time home buyers, we had a great experience working with Solidworks to renovate our new house. From the beginning, we appreciated Leo's willingness to listen to our vision and provide his own point of view on what would make the project successful. We were able to scale the project to achieve our goals within the budget we had set, and also worked with his design partner Julia to visualize the end result. We also appreciated Julia's help recommending and sourcing some of the finishes for the project. In the end, we decided to redo our kitchen, two bathrooms, a new floor, and paint the interior of the house. Throughout the course of the project, Leo and Julia were fairly proactive in their communication and also flexible working around our schedules for walk throughs and checks ins. This was appreciated as my wife and I both work and we were living about 45 mins away while the project was completed. Leo was on site frequently to direct his subcontractors and ensure high quality work. The end result is beautiful and looks just like we envisioned. And after a few months in the house, we're very happy with the build quality and have not had any major issues. In fact, the attention to detail of some of his crew, particularly Jose, exceeded our own and really had them going the extra mile to make things perfect. Leo told us from the beginning that he is not the cheapest, but that he would not "nickel and dime" us on change orders, and he was true to that word. The budget expanded a bit, but only because we added on work like adding the new floors. If we have one complaint, it's that we felt there were some delays early in the project getting certain trades to keep the project moving, but I attribute that, at least in part, to the high volume of home improvement work being done in the area throughout 2021. To his credit, Leo really moved mountains to complete the finishes quickly at the end of the project, knowing that we had just had our second child and were anxious to move in and get settled. Renovations are horrifying. Huge sums of money, asymmetric information and a lot of bad actors. My wife and I had been looking into doing a large backyard renovation for a while (40+ foot pool, outdoor kitchen, putting green, landscaping, the works). It was going to be a huge job and the more contractors I spoke to, the less enthused i was to do it. I found most contractors were on two extremes: either the job simply wasn't big enough for them to care or the job was bigger than anything they had done before. in either case, far less than ideal. At the point where I was about to throw in the towel and accept that my backyard would probably just continue to be a space for me to chip golf balls on occasion, I found Leo and his company Solidwords Remodeling online. Leo was very responsive and came over to my house to discuss the job. Beyond the fact that Leo is just a nice person, he's a trustworthy businessman. He offered to do a full 3D rendering of our backyard (something most other contractors had not offered or would do for a price) and came back a few days later to discuss with my wife and me. We hired Leo and are extremely satisfied with his work. We are about 1 week away from finishing our project and everything looks amazing. Through the whole process, Leo has been very accessible (usually responding to any text I send him with a phone call back within 5 minutes), kept us updated on the process and really made it a low hassle for us. Last summer, i took on the daunting task of completely remodeling my house and deck. I knew it would be a huge undertaking so i wanted to make sure i hired the right contractor and the right team for the job, so when i read Solidworks' reviews i knew i could trust them to take this on-- and they did not disappoint! From the initial consultation, Leo walked me through the entire process step by step and remained involved with every aspect of the project and every detail along the way. I had a vision for the overall design that I shared with Leo and we were instantly able to get on the same page in terms of style. Solidworks replaced the existing outdoor deck with Ipe wood for a modern, durable look that turned out amazing. Inside, the interior renovations consisted of a full kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, and replacement of the old hardwood floors with ceramic tile throughout the house. The 90s kitchen was very dated and closed off, so they re-envisioned it drastically by opening it up completely; removing walls and reinforcing the support to create a whole new space! Leo was very knowledgeable about all the materials involved and made the selection / shopping process for all the materials and fixtures on my end very enjoyable as he guided me through it personally. He delivered 1 on 1 trips to various showrooms to pick out everything I needed and was always available 24/7 on his phone to answer questions or share ideas back and forth with me. For the countertops, he recommended porcelain slabs vs the usual marble or stone that I had in mind and i'm definitely glad i went with that option instead-- the final product looks great and is super low maintenance since it isn't porous or prone to staining like natural stone. For the kitchen cabinets, we went with a custom white oak design (with concealed appliances) that looks beautiful with the counters, the black subway tile backsplash, and all of the matching fixtures Leo helped pick out to ensure the overall style throughout the house would be consistent, down to the smallest details. Renovations in the bathroom consisted of completely gutting the existing situation and re-configuring the layout for space and efficiency optimization, including putting in a wall mounted toilet and a rain shower and with a custom built, floating white oak vanity. They replaced the old moldy wood under the existing flooring and then waterproofed the new floorboards to prevent any water damage in the future before covering the bathroom walls and floor in porcelain tiles. I love the new design and they even added a built-in shampoo niche with LED lighting that accentuates the clean, modern look. Just got off the phone with them, requested to schedule an appointment for a quote at one of my managed properties and their excuse was somewhere along the lines of "we only deal with the owners" (the lady could hardly speak English). Had no problem scheduling with 2 other vendors for a quote. The owners hire managers like me to deal with time wasters like these. Find service elsewhere. EDIT on SAME day: These guys called me 3 times while I was in the middle of a turnover/phone calls and threatened to SUE me for my review. Their response is completely different from the words of their secretary. Where did "racism" come from? It's simple illiteracy--they made it even more clear with their review response (then/than, grammar, etc... is this 1st grade?). Maybe they should focus their time finding a proper secretary who can communicate properly instead of insulting their clients. I work with plenty of non-native speakers in this industry, that alone does not hinder me from using their services. Don't put up a business on Yelp if you can't take criticism. I've received low, honest reviews before for my businesses and learned lessons instead of insulting my clients. And when I say message me instead of constantly disrupting my calls throughout the day the FIRST time, do it. During my turnover, all in-person technicians AND my contractor on the phone remained RESPECTFUL and PATIENT while I dealt with these disruptive calls. Ultimate definition of a time-waster, this company simply solidified that statement with their actions. Can you imagine if these guys carried this attitude over to a contract and something comes up during their work? Obviously don't learn their lessons. Stay away. I rarely give bad reviews.
