    solar panels at work.
    Janet G.

I wanted to get my solar panels in before the end of 2015, and this company delivered as they promised. I contacted several companies, some in this area, others out of town, and this company was the most responsive. Before making an estimate they sent an engineer over to get on my roof and measure the sunlight during the optimum time for measuring the light. It was set up and very thoroughly--the engineer walked around for over an hour taking light measurements from several spots on the roof. I had others come to the property, or give me an estimate based on the Google map of my home, and nobody spent the time or effort to configure the best layout to get the most of the panels. As an example, another company came as the sun was almost set, and spent under 15 minutes taking light measurements. They sell high quality American or European manufactured panels, and are staffed locally. Because they are connected to REpower, they do get input from well-trained engineers as to the final configuration. When I told them that I preferred micro-inverters, they rewrote the estimate so that I could get the configuration that I wanted. The permit process was handled quickly by the firm, without any input from me at all other than signing the contract to get the work going. The panels were installed in the time frame promised without any delays other than a short rain delay. When the City's engineer came to sign off on the electrical work done, he commented on what a good job the electricians did. No trash was ever left behind. We obtained financing from an inexpensive solar loan from a community bank in nearby Santa Cruz. We also qualified for the state sponsored financing but the expenses related to that were high, and the interest rate not so great. We had a monitor installed in our home that we can view with an Ipad app so we can check ourselves that all panels are functioning properly. Our power bill so far has been reduced significantly. I am glad I made the decision to work with this local company.

When I first inquired, Tim (the owner) reached out and scheduled a consultation/evaluation of my existing system for the following day. He arrived on time, was professional and very knowledgeable. He sent me over a couple different proposals that he believed would be best for me and my usage. I reached out to competing companies to test the market and one company found out that I was on a different NEM standard than we previously thought. This discovery made me second guess getting solar for the time being. I reached out to Tim and he said that he estimated I would still need to upgrade but that I could give it a few months to see how my energy bills were in the winter and early spring. To say he was right was an understatement! My bills went from $60 to over $300 some months. Now that I knew that adding to my system was worth it and had more information, I reached back out to Tim. He didn't miss a beat in suggesting a system that maximized my output and didn't break the bank. (Mind you, he spent hours going back and forth with me answering questions and concerns I had) Ultimately, I chose to go with Tim because of his expertise (he was an electrician prior to starting Golden State Solar), professionalism, customer service and honesty. He never pushed me to make a decision and gave me multiple options that he believed were best. The permit and installation process were painless and completed within a couple months (mostly waiting for the permit). The system drastically increased my solar output and I couldn't be more happy with my choice to go with Golden State Solar!

Tim, Nick, and their team installed our new system within just a few days. My home initially had…read moreonly the bare minimum solar setup required for new builds, and Tim was able to seamlessly integrate the new panels with the existing ones, adding a battery in the process. Other companies I contacted said they couldn't work with my existing system, but Tim made it happen. The entire process, from consultation to installation was quick and straightforward. After installation, one panel showed as offline. The team promptly replaced the microinverter, but the system still wasn't performing optimally. They came back out and replaced the panel, ensuring everything was working as it should. Recently, I noticed an error with one of the microinverters on the app. I reached out to Tim, and he responded within a day to resolve the issue.

Andreas met with me that week and we discussed our goals, system design and size, and how it would impact our current energy bills. Given the tax credits ending at the end of the calendar year, I knew I most likely wouldn't be on the schedule to install and commission my system before then but Sandbar worked with me to find a financing option that provided many of the monetary benefits of the tax rebate with minimal restrictions. Sandbar completed a site audit in September and finalized the system design in November. Just after the new year, I got word that all the pieces were in place and Sandbar would start applying for permits and work with PG&E to be able to schedule our install. Drake and his team came out in the second week of January to start the installation process. I was kept in the loop and told what to expect for each day of the process. Installation wrapped up within 4 days with minimal impact to our lives and we began a dance with PG&E to sign off and install a meter collar that unfortunately lasted a few weeks, all the while Sandbar kept me up to date. Once PG&E installed the meter collar and signed off, Sandbar was back out quickly to commission the system and get me fully set up. Since commissioning, I've already seen a great impact on my winter energy bills and look forward to the rest of the seasons. After installation, Sandbar went the extra mile to help me navigate the San Jose Clean Energy rebate program after some initial issues applying and receiving the rebate. They worked with me and SJCE to ensure that I qualified and that I would receive the full rebate for my battery installation. I've already recommended Sandbar Solar to others and I'd recommend them to you as well, dear reader.

All smooth and no cost creep. That is because we chose Sandbar. Sandbar is truly different. A step above others. And now we know why. 1. IN-PERSON. Others provided us a quote by email sight unseen. That made us feel weary. Sandbar came to see our house first, inspected all the areas that would have been affected by the installation and by meeting us they understood what our energy goal (present and future) was and our peeve points. That turned out to be CRUCIAL for us and I still believe today that assures no surprises. BTW, no cost associated to this in person quote. 2. NO $ SURPRISES. No cost creep. And nope... their quote was not the highest either of the ones we got. 3. COMMUNICATION. They are good communicators at every level. From David to Jocelyn to Alicia. And they seem to talk to each other too so there were no crosswires. 4. REBATES. Their assistance goes us above and beyond and thanks to the post set up walk through visit, it includes submitting rebates, setting up the app and answering all our new-to-Solar questions. So so soooooo helpful! Bottom line: Sandbar is a mile above others. Fair pricing and excellent support. Truly a mile above others!

The team started the removal on Tuesday but had to leave after 3 panels die to very high winds. I have a 2nd story steep slope roof so is was not safe for the crew. Sarah was very professional rescheduled a crew for Wednesday. Of course it was pouring when they arrived but the wind was not a factor. They removed the 28 panels but had to leave the roof mounts in. If removed I would have leaks all over my 2nd story of my house. Daddario roofing is scheduled for Monday to remove the roof and again Sarah came through. Sarah had a team out Friday morning to remove the roof mounts and we are good to go. Sarah did a amazing job of rescheduling 2 different crews that I am sure were already scheduled to get my job on time. Great work by all!

I recently completed a solar system installation with 18 panels and 2 batteries. Our original goal…read more(as we communicated to the company multiple times) was to fully disconnect from PG&E and rely on our backup generator for power during lengthy poor weather time periods. The initial installation went smoothly, but everything since then has been disappointing & frustrating. The county permitting process was delayed by nearly 8 weeks because the solar installation was not up to code. When they sent out a team to fix the problem, they ordered the wrong insufficient materials because they somehow didn't know the size of the array that they had installed weeks earlier. It eventually passed the county permitting inspection. Then there were problems with functionality during a power outage. During the sales process we voiced multiple concerns around having sufficient battery capacity to sustain multiple days of poor weather. We spent a lot of time & money to have our generator permitted based on this conversation. We were told that our standby generator could be used to recharge the batteries. When a lengthy PG&E outage coupled with bad weather in early January caused our batteries to drain to zero, with no generator charging, I contacted their service department email yet it took them 15 days to respond. They told me that the batteries can never be recharged with the generator and insisted that the prior conversations never occurred. We never would have spent $$$$ on generator permitting if we were told that it was impossible to charge the batteries via the generator. Overall, a very disappointing and experience. While the solar array works fine during good weather, that's not the primary reason why we installed the system. Poor service, dishonesty and incompetence are unaccetpable. I can't recommend working with a company that behaves in this fashion.
