Juan is an awesome barber. He started out at Leucadia Barbershop and moved to Solana Barbers last year, and now runs the chair closest to the front window. Genuinely the best barber I've ever had. Top notch cut, takes his time and gets it right every time. It's not easy finding a truly great barber and when you do, you usually want to stick with them for years. Juan is that sort. I happened to be in the San Diego area for business and desperately needed a haircut, searching the web and I had a few hits closer to the hotel, but none took walk ins and were rude on the phone. Anyhow took a chance on Solana Barbers and have to admit it's the best cut I've had in a while, although they prefer appointments they were very accommodating, I had the pleasure of having Kieu (Q) cut my hair, she was extremely pleasant and professional, especially nice that she did a scissor cut and straight razor for the edges. Prices were good too. Keep in mind it's a cash only business, but we'll worth the time and money.I'll certainly be back next time I'm in the area. read more

Oh thank Buddha. I don't ever have to set foot in a SuperCuts again. I've been looking for a real barber shop for a while. Well. To be fair I haven't so much been "looking" as "hoping I would find". It's lazier, but similar. Anyway, I have found one. I've been in here twice for my new "close" look - #3 up top faded to #2 on the sides. The barber the first time was a bit chatty, but the second time when I arrived, there were probably 8 active cuts going on, and mercifully no one was talking. This is how you know you're in a man-friendly environment. Even though two of the barbers were women (I almost dinged a star for that), everyone knew that making small talk about the weather or about your stylist's no-good ex-husband who never really was very good with romance and always left dishes in th... oh my god, SuperCuts stylists SHUT UP! The cut was $20 ($16 plus tip) - a little pricey for a barber shop cut, but let's face it, these guys have to pay nearly-oceanfront rent. Most importantly - they shave the neckline. With that righteous hot lather and a nice, deadly straight-edge. Every cut comes complete with a few minutes of odd I-refuse-to-enjoy-this-too-much homoeroticism in the form of a 5 or 10 minute scalp and shoulder massage. It's truly striking to see this manly place with no talking and simple cuts and all the interior cues from the 60s you can shake a stick at ... and then one of the customers has his eyes closed as he enjoys a manhandling. But it does feel pretty good. Powerful hands kneading away my worries... There's a bit of street parking in front, and a big lot in the back. UPDATE (8/25/07): I've been here maybe 5 times so far, and twice now I've gotten chatty barbers who talk shit about their ex-wives and then about how now they're trying to choose which woman to stay with. Was in need of a good barber after my hair was completely butchered at a Great Clips. Work right next to this place so I figured I would give it a fair shake. Best haircut I have ever gotten! It's an old school barber shop and these guys take their time. They know how to cut hair and do a great job giving you exactly what you're looking for. Only $20 for a mens haircut and they also offer straight razor shaves. It's cash only so plan accordingly. Places like this are a lost art and I would highly recommend checking them out. I found my "new" favorite barbershop! I'm sort of old school and the simple fact is that I don't have much hair so a barbershop is best for me. I've tried Supercuts and other chain hair cutting places and you just can't beat the treatment (and price) of an old fashioned, traditional barbershop. It's conveniently located on a major road and there are places to eat nearby and literally walking distance to the beach. There was no problem finding a place to park right on the street right out front. I was lucky in that they were sort of slow so I didn't have to wait. I walked in and there was a barber just waiting for a customer. I told him the way I wanted my haircut and that was it. After sitting down in the chair and getting draped he went to work. The barber who worked on me was very gentle. He certainly took his time and was a bit of a perfectionist. After giving me a great cut, he did the traditional neck shave with a straight razor. You gotta love that! And when he was completely finished, he did a brief scalp and shoulder massage. I used to go to a barber near my office, but I've since moved my office down in this area. I had thought about making the drive back to where my previous barber was because I didn't want to try hunting around looking for a new place, but I saw this place and decided to give it a shot. And now I have my new favorite barber and will unquestionably be back. read more

Not sure what the big deal is. The price is good - $16 for either haircut or a shave. Otherwise nothing else to rave about. The haircut was nothing fancy, scissors did not even come into play. My hair is short, but I guess I've never gotten a haircut like that before. The shave, was alright. Cheap cream, cheap aftershave, but the barber was very careful and took his time to the extent that I thought he was carving his name in my face. I do have very tough facial hair, so shaving me is not easy, but in the end I can get a closer shave myself with gillette razor. There were no cuts and no irritation afterward, so if your facial hair is softer this might work great for you. read more

Great haircut from Mike, very interesting fellow, talked about world travels. He took his very professional time on the cut. Shave on the next and sideburns. $16 with a good tip. The shop is old school, leather chairs, hot shave cream, scalp massage, talc and brush to clean up. Nice beach breeze back to front, great mix of old and new on the play list.
