Sol Rouge, you sure do have some SOOOUL! This is by far the most liveliest tasting room that you'll experience while on Treasure Island! This was the last tasting room on our Treasure Island Winery tour, and it was also the most fun! The tasting room is quite small compared to a few of the others, but it's also extremely intimate. It has a barn-like feel with a horseshoe style tasting bar and great views of the Bay Bridge on their outside patio. They also share a bocce ball court with another tasting room that's right next door! Dave was our wine pourer and was excellent! He had so much energy and he made us fee really comfortable during our time there. He even gave us a few extra splashes of the wines that we really liked. Speaking of their wine, I have to say that I'm totally impressed! We actually enjoyed every wine that we tasted during or visit. It's $15 for a taste of 5 wines from their current tasting menu. I really liked their smooth Viognier, but their Cab Franc and Zinfandel were my absolute faves! Their bottles are reasonably priced and they also sell wine by the glass! They were bumpin' all of the fun old school hits and the vibe was super casual compared to all of the other tasting rooms that we visited on the island. This was my first time to Treasure Island, and after driving through SF, it is a complete change from the city. There is hardly any traffic, wide lanes, and plenty of parking. The winery was easy to find due to an abundance of signs along the roads pointing in the right direction. The winery itself is quite small with a couple of seats at the bar, but there are some seats outside as well. Make sure to bring layers as it can get quite windy, and sunblock for the sun. We got the tasting, which consisted of 5 wines (1 white, 4 reds). The bartender also gave us an extra rose and an extra red. Overall I thought the tasting was worth the $15 per person. You can also buy bottles to go. Afterwards, make sure to stop by the main road that runs by the water and take some pictures with the backdrop of SF in the background. read more

I've been dancin' to Bruno Mars' new seriously hot, hella catchy, ass-shaking singles, "Chunky" and "24k Magic" on repeat for the last week or so. These tracks make me want to gamble and party at casinos with all of my beautiful friends (who would be dressed in silky smooth undergarments) while two-step the s*** out of two-steppin' all night. They make me feel sexy. They give me life. I have this weird urge to go to Vegas, now. This past August, Sol Rouge Winery gave me the same feeling of, "I feel like hot gangsta awesomeness, because I'm on this island in the middle of the Bae Area, drinking wine, watching locals knock bocce ball (so bourgeoise), and picnic-ing with 50+ cheeses deep, all while admiring both the Golden Gate and Bay Area Bridges. Oh, and glass of wine in hand, of course." I felt like Tupac in the "How do you want it," video. Except, people had there clothes on there. Sure, I could individually critique their sips from their vineyards, but I thought their 2013 Gypsey Blanc and 2012 Gypsey Rouge both tasted fantastic. I dunno. My dranks didn't help me win in bocce ball, though. Other tidbits: -There's plenty of free parking on Treasure Island. -If you want to hide from the city's perfect weather, they do have seating inside. -The dude holding it down at the counter at Sol Rouge was very friendly. -You might shake your ass, while holding a glass of wine when you visit. Don't drop your glass. -Prices are reasonable for a glass of wine. You can also work with them to do group packages. Go, go, go and party like a local. I really enjoyed my time here on a recent weekend visit! Our plan to stop here was part of a broader bachelorette/bridal party weekend and we came prepared! I'd been to Treasure Island forever ago when they first started opening wineries on the island and vaguely recalled that there weren't any food options on the island, so we planned ahead and hit up the Ferry Building prior to making the drive over to Sol Rouge. After doing a little online research about the place, I saw there were picnic tables - so that's exactly what we did - we packed a picnic from Ferry Building merchants and parked ourselves right outside the winery door for what was to be a fantabulous afternoon. Anyway, after setting up our picnic - we ventured inside to the winery to check out the tasting dealio. After meeting the proprietor/vintner/owner dude, he said we could do a flight - or we would do a glass of a single varietal if we wished to go that route instead. Score! This ended up being the path of choice since we all were in white moods and there was only 1 white (4 reds) on the tasting list. The white was a viognier and it was a really crisp one at that. None of this sweet and overly fruity nonsense so I was a quick fan. Not to mention, as I came to find out - we have some pretty sentimental family ties to Lake County and where the grapes are grown as its near where my grandparents use to have a lake house for 50+ years. I know that's a little more than you need to know in a Yelp review, but bottom line - overall, this was a very pleasant and enjoyable experience on what turned out to be a beautiful blue sky day! read more

Helpful tips if you've never been: It's usually very windy. It probably won't be very hot, but wear & bring sunblock. You're basically a lizard baking in the sun & wind out there. If you are driving and/or don't plan on drinking wine or beer (there's a "club" with beer next door) bring something else to drink. The wineries sell wine and provide free water. That's it. You can (and should) bring your own food. That said, this is a fun, casual place to gather a group of friends for a day of gorgeous views & bocce ball. The Sol Rouge & VIE tasting rooms are right next to each other, with several picnic tables outside. There's another tasting room across the parking lot (kinda bumpy - choose your shoes wisely) that has 2 bathrooms and sinks with hot water, soap & towels. Very rustic, but well maintained. One. More. Thing. When you're leaving TI, if you're going to SF, the onramp to the fwy is weird. It comes up very quickly, and you have a very narrow space between those white divider poles to drive through, and if you miss it, you're going to Oakland. The location and atmosphere of these 2 joined wineries is just fantastic. It's almost a hidden gem, but its slowly starting to be discovered. I came here last year on a holiday weekend and we were the only patrons, this year we were one of many - but still nothing compared to the typical SF crowds. I recommend bringing a picnic lunch, hanging out to play bocce ball and spending a good half day. There are 2 other wineries right next door, so its a solid way to spend a weekend. The tastings are pretty intimate because the tasting rooms are so small, the music is fun, generally a great experience. I prefer the wine at Sol Rouge and Vie to the Winery SF, but usually hit all three anyway :) read more

That being said, I can't give 4+ stars just because of how awesome the staff is, and how cool of a vibe I get from this place. The wine is just not flavor I like. I was part of a wine tour which brought us to three wineries on Treasure Island. Sol Rouge is mediocre at best. No character to the wines, although the staff was pleasant - very engaging! A large factor here could be our tour since there were many wines available for tasting which were not on our schedule. I feel strongly however, if the three tastings you offer me on a tour are this bad, there is no reason I will return when I drive over to experience the other wineries which were not on our tour. As of the time I wrote this review I noticed the location Yelp shows is not correct. The location shown for Vie Winery (same address) is more accurate. Vie and Sol have the same address because they sort of share a corrugated metal building which is unattractive on the outside but quaint inside. Vie has the left side and Sol the right. Vie, next door, has two Bocce courts and picnic tables. Remember to reserve them in advance and bring a picnic (there isn't any place selling food here). Maybe if you're lucky you'll find a wine you like and the experience can be very nice. read more

The wine here is so good!!! This was one of the stops on the Yelp wine tour I did on Treasure Island. Everyone was so nice and I really liked how there was an outdoor aspect to the layout of the winery. This winery is really cool to discover and Treasure Island has a great back drop for a walking wine tour. I remember the guy behind the bar as being very sweet and how he described the wines made me want to take a case home with me and only drink Sol Rouge wine! He's name was Hummingbird, and i think it's neat that this place didn't make him use a different name, like Steve, and let him be himself. I think it says a lot about the company. A great way to spend a few lazy hours on a weekend. My sisters and I did a little wine tasting, followed by enthusiastic/uncoordinated bocce. We bought a bottle of the rose to drink while we played. The location is 100% industrial charm, with views of Oakland and San Francisco. The tasting room staff was amazing, friendly, fun and clearly passionate and highly knowledgeable about their wines. Laura had great information about each wine that was interesting to both newbies to wine tasting and people who had multiple wine club memberships. Sol Rouge is tucked away in the obscure and forgotten Treasure Island. I think that's what makes it so unique, along with all the other wineries there. Came on an impulse on a gloomy Saturday afternoon and had such a good time. The wineries are a little rundown, very barnyard-esque but the environment is cute and fun. They play good music and the staff is really friendly and outgoing. I was looking for a good wine to gift a friend and loved Sol Rouge's offerings. If you buy two bottles they'll waive your tasting fee so considering I was looking for a bottle for myself as well, this was a pretty nice deal. My favorites were the Viognier and the Gypsy Rouge, but their Rosé came in pretty close and I'm not even a Rosé kind of girl. I'd love to come back on a warm, sunny day, have a picnic and play bocce on their courts. You'll also get a pretty great view of the city and can only imagine how pretty it looks at sunset. I believe they close at 5ish on the weekends but makes a perfect day drinking spot. read more

We love the wine at Sol Rogue and the tasting room is a lot of fun. The indoor/outdoor setup makes it feel laid back and we LOVE that the wineries are dog friendly. Sol Rogue has recently undergone some remodeling and the updated layout is very welcoming. Although previous staff have always been friendly and helpful, HummingBird has really taken this tasting room to the next level. He has this amazing ability to articulate exactly what you are thinking and tasting when you are drinking the wine. His descriptions are a really fun way to encourage discussions about the wine and help wine novices start to identify their own palate. read more

The food and wine were awesome. The service was horrible. When we arrived, mind you for my husbands birthday and reservations I had placed the week prior, we were met with the nastiest reception. The server asked if we had reservations and I said yes. Then he said are you sure you don't mean to be at the place next door (which was bizarre to me as the winery was clearly labeled). I showed him my reservation after he told me he did not know if I had one as he did have his "paper" on him. Once he confirmed, he told my husband and I we could sit anywhere. I then asked him about playing bocce ball as we were reserved for this. He stated with an attitude that we would need to have a reservation and I then told him we did. He walked 3 feet over to his paper which clearly stated that we had a reservation and then hastily apologized for not realizing this. After sitting, we reviewed the menu and he came over to take our order. I asked him if the cheese was pasteurized and he stated he didn't know which would have been fine. Then, he went on a diatribe about how would he know since he "doesn't have any allergies and can eat what he wants". I then told him I was pregnant to make it clear of the reason I wanted to know (which I should not have to). After we received our food from another server, he did not come to check on the table once- no water, no concern about how the food was, nothing! I was floored. While my husband and I were there for about 1.5 hours, we left before our reservation was up since we could not take the terrible service anymore. I had to inquire about my own napkins and water. I hate to make this a race issue but as the only Black couple there, we had zero service while we witnessed every table receive repleshed beverages and overall better service. Furthermore, my husband and I as physicians work all of the time- I was really looking forward to this and was shocked by how abysmal this service was. Ultimately, I did NOT leave a tip (which never occurs since as someone who has worked in the service industry, I understand the value of tips); I simply could not leave one with this service. I told his colleague when I left that the food was great but the service was not. This was not well received so I figured I would leave a review. By far, worse service at a winery, restaurant, and overall in general, compared to any place I've been to in the city which is sad because the wine and cheese were truly delightful. I finally got over to taste wine on Treasure Island. All of the wineries on the south side are fun, but Sol Rouge was the most memorable. The secret love child of Margaret Cho and Robert Parker, Hummingbird proved an entertaining and informative guide for our wine tasting. Sol Rouge, like most of the local tasting rooms, has pretty hefty tasting fees ($15) but it is waived if you purchase 2 bottles of wine. Another option is to take advantage of an event like their recent barrel tasting, where $25 covers your tasting at all 5 wineries. read more

Some friends and I happened across Sol Rouge after a CrossFit competition in the lot next door-- and it was the perfect cap to a very long day! Hummingbird's descriptions of the wines transported me to another place and time: smelling pencil shavings and cedarwood, picking blackberries on the side of the road, and eating cherry pie on a hot summer day. We were all thrilled to have met him and tasted these wines, and all three of us ended up buying bottles to take home. We plan to come back for an afternoon of lounging, sipping, and sunning. We purchased the Groupon Bocce ball & wine tasting for 8 people, such a great affordable deal. I had no problem communicating with them to book a Bocce Ball reservation, however they do fill up fast so make sure to book pretty far in advance.
