Everything is takeaway here, and the modern orange packaging is as well designed as the beautiful pastries. Laminated pastry and croissants here are sculptural and tall. My duck prosciutto, turkey fig and brie pastry was firmer (and harder and flakier) than expected, likely because the pastry is compressed tightly to hold its shape. The filling was a delicious combo of flavors.They also make croissant cubes, and other marvels. There are four small tables in the cafe. They serve coffee drinks, including a viral cold brew Banana Caramel Explainner, which I skipped because the pastry was already so rich. The kitchen is helmed by chef Nasir Armar, formerly pastry chef at a couple Michelin starred spots: at Sorrel & at Saison. The team here is friendly and polished. Definitely premium pricing on retail items: think $30 cookie creams and $40 jars of jam. Impressive craftsmanship on the pastry.

For pastries, I got the plum and toasted rice cube. Unfortunately I didn't realize that I took a blurry picture so I don't have one to post. The cube is a layered sheet croissant stacked and a bit awkward to eat without teasing it apart first. There is quite a bit caramelia cream and tart plum jam inside the cube but it is a small pastry and overall tasted just okay for $10. For drinks, we had the cookies and cream latte $7.50 and banana & salted cream einspanner $9.50. The latte was very small and lacking of any coffee flavor, it was just a sweet drink. The einspanner tasted like a cold brew and bits of banana foster with salted cream. Not worth the hype or the cost of $30 for these 3 items.

I ventured to Juniper during the late morning rush, and while there was a line out the door, it moved quickly and the bakers were hard at work keeping the pastries stocked throughout the morning. As I waited in line, I admired the impressive selection of sweet and savory croissants. Since I visited during the summer, many of the pastries featured fresh tomato and stone fruits. While I was tempted to try one of each, I was on a mission during this visit to try the black sesame kouign amann. When I placed my order at the counter, I was served a fresh-from-the oven kouign amann - this rarely happens! I couldn't resist trying a piece as I left the bakery, and it was indeed exquisite. The black sesame kouign amann from B. Patisserie is my gold standard, and Juniper's version is a close contender. While the black sesame flavor is much lighter and the texture fluffier than the B. Patisserie version, I liked the abundance of the crispy edges (as well as the year-round availability). I will certainly be back to try more of Juniper's pastries.
