I read these reviews prior to my trip and I was preparing for the worst. I mentally prepped myself to walk into the smallest, dingy creepy room but to my surprise, the room was not bad at all. Someone mentioned the lack of amenities but the hotel provides shampoo, conditioner, liquid body wash and a small round bar of soap. We used that for our hands but you can use it for your body if you want. Not sure what other amenities that person was expecting. Body lotion? Mouth wash? Sewing kit? This isn't the Waldorf Astoria. Hotel entrance is on street level. You will have to go up a flight of stairs to reach their check in desk. Note: THERE ARE NO ELEVATORS in this boutique hotel. There's a total of three levels of rooms. All stair access. We were placed on the very top floor. The bellman was able to assist us with bringing our luggage & bags up to our room. Room was relatively clean to the naked eye. Although there were a small (red wine? make up?) stain on the blanket. It didn't look like blood so I was indifferent with seeing that small speck. Room did not have any funky odors. We got two queen beds and there was just enough room for two females with a suitcase & a bag each. We did not feel cramped in here. Room was kind of dark. The lights in the room didn't do too much to brighten up the room and natural lighting was scarce. One window but that's not enough to put our make up on. Natural lighting is best when putting on your face make up. IYKYK. Walls are thin!!!!!! It was quiet the first two nights but we got a neighbor the rest of our trip and that person snores fkin loud!!!! We literally heard his inhales and exhales clearly. I wasn't surprised with the thin walls since on their Instagram, they claim they're the oldest building. Every employee we've encountered during our week here have been friendly and helpful. Sohotel is conveniently located in between Chinatown and Little Italy. Easily walkable to plenty of restaurants, beverages (we solely focused on coffee & tea), souvenir stores and transportation stations. Area felt safe too. I'm personally a hotel snob and enjoy staying at nice places like The Wynn in Las Vegas, The Roosevelt in NOLA to even the Yacht Club at Walt Disney World. But I was very satisfied with my stay here at The Sohotel. read more

For the price and comfort I don't see it getting beat. Rooms are bigger and darker than most, AC goes to 68 and feels cooler than other hotels that go to 62. There's no amenities but it's New York you can get that everywhere around you read more

Love this boutique hotel in SoHo! Great location, top notch service, reasonably priced, comfortable bed. We left our bags before check in time and when we arrived back to the hotel after a day of walking around they had our bags in our room. Complimentary morning coffee was delicious. The 2 level lobby had several cute chic seating areas to relax. Gustavo at the parking place down the street was so professional and had our car ready at the front of the lot when we were checking out. We will definite one back here! read more

A friend stayed at this hotel and recommended it due to it's unique style and great location. FYI I didn't get the opportunity to stay there. I had booked a room for a family reunion in New York. Sohotel offers discounts for 3 or 5 night stays or if you book in advance. The policy indicates these bookings are non-refundable. After booking, I received unfortunate news of two family emergencies and our family reunion was being canceled. I have never had to cancel a hotel reservation before. I called Sohotel reservations and explained the situation my family was in. The gentleman was so kind and empathetic and made an exception to cancel at no cost due to what my family was going through. I was very touched by this kindness during a difficult time and not having to worry about this cancelation expense on top of flight and airbnb costs. My rating is 5/5 for the customer service. I look forward to when I get to leave a review on my experience when I do get to stay at Sohotel. read more

To my suprise, they require a signed release to enter your room to make your bed and bring clean sheets. Although we were there for only 2 nights I fully expected the bed to be made and refresh the towels and bath mat that easily gets wet from the shower without a door. No phones in rooms, need to call from your cell to let them know the hairdryer is broken. No coffee maker in the room. read more

I really enjoyed staying at this hotel. My favorite part was the heated bathroom floor. The rooms reminded me of being on friends with a bright colors in exposed brick. The beds are super cozy pillows comfy. Great location you can be in little Italy in seconds and steps away from Chinatown . Soho is just a seven minute walk away. Wow...this was hands down the best hotel we have stayed at in a long time! When checking out the reviews, you need to personally edit out anyone who doesn't know much about NYC, because their reviews are skewed to expectations from other hotels. First and foremost, let's tackle those issues people complained about. The room is on the smaller side and that is PERFECTLY acceptable in NYC, especially at the cost of this hotel and it's location. (A great price by the way). If you want a huge room that is completely unnecessary, stay in jersey. Second, they don't have a fridge and that is standard for Manhattan hotels. Lastly they don't need dressers because they have large beautiful wooden shelves you can use. Now that I've answered some of the weaker complaints, let's talk about the good stuff. The decor is absolutely stunning on every floor and in the room. Lots of exposed brick and beautiful paint. Each floor has old gorgeous furniture that definitely has a history! The staff is extremely friendly and accommodated every one of our needs, even a kind of inside joke with green candy. They have a pull up zone to bring up your luggage as well. Most importantly the location of this hotel is absolutely perfect and will be where I stay from now on. It's near everywhere! You can walk to union square in 20-25 mins, China town in 30 or so minutes, St. Marks in 35 mins, and even the high line in 35 or so minutes. Yeah I said walk, you are in NYC, use those legs people! This place was highly recommended to me by a friend who works at a local business who lodges clients here. Does this friend hate me? -no elevator (wish I had combed through reviews before booking). If you are disabled, elderly, or have mobility challenges, you're SOL. While the concierge did bring my bags up to my room, you have to climb stairs with luggage to even check in. -I've stayed in capsule hotels with small rooms in NYC (I am no tourist, lived in NYC for many years), and there are many in the LES (now defunct Sister City), Chelsea (the Gem), and Soho. The queen rooms at Sohotel take the cake. The room is well styled with a very nice bathroom and some storage but not enough room to open a suitcase and no closet. -no functioning Wi-Fi, no phone, and television is old and grainy. There may or may not be someone at the front desk at any given time. -LOUD workers screaming at the top of their lungs and slamming things around in the hallways early in the morning on weekends. -moldy air conditioner and no reliable hot water -curtains that don't quite close, so the buildings next door can see right into room This is hardly a four star hotel as advertised on Priceline. There are better hotels at a similar price point. Unless you love inconveniences, do yourself a favor and book elsewhere. read more

Very friendly and nice hotel. When you enter into the building, the first two floors are mostly just the lobby area. On the next floor, you will have the front desk to check in for the hotel. There you will also have seats with complimentary tea and or coffee. It appears not many hotels offer these amenities so I'm glad this hotel provide this service. The entire building including bedrooms and hallways are hard wood floors so you won't have to worry about stained carpets. Once you check in, you can take the stairs to your room depending on the number of your hotel room. We stayed in a room with 3 beds. That is correct, there were 2 queen beds and 1 twin bed. The bedroom did not have a desk, but that's fine. The showers can be hit or miss. Our 1st room had a glass standing shower whereas the other room we booked had a shower on a bathtub. The offer complimentary soap, lotion, shower gels, and a flat iron for ironing. They don't have complimentary breakfast here due to the limited space. I think management should clean the shared areas better such as the hallways as it can get a bit dusty there. However, the bedrooms were clean for the most part. The staff here are very friendly and was able to help us check out a little later as our return flight was much later in the day. I definitely recommend people to check this hotel out. Sohotel Why 5 stars? I flew from California to NYC for a quick 20 hour rendezvous - dinner and dancing. I needed a decent place to rest my head for a few hours before hopping back on the plane. So I wasn't looking for frills and thrills of a hotel, just a clean hip spot near my venue. I've traveled more than my fair share and ratings sometimes have to go deeper than surface amenities. When you're going to NYC, think about what you want your experience to be like and understand that typical hotel rooms in NYC are small. If you want more space and amenities, look elsewhere but expect to pay more. Let's keep it real...the downside: * No elevator. I stayed on the 4th floor. No biggie. Now if you're on crouches or have body ailments, then ask in advance for a room on a lower floor. * The room is small but has a hip speakeasy kinda vibe. No fridge, no dresser, minimalist kind of room. There is a place to hang clothes. * The lighting was challenging as I was trying to get dolled up for the night but I still managed to look fabulous. ;) Let's keep it real...the upside: * I left a brand new, tags still on, quite expensive accessory on a hanger. I didn't realize until I was back in California. I called the hotel at midnight and the kind gentleman who answered immediately went to the room while I waited on hold. It wasn't there so he sent a message to the head of housekeeping. Later that day, I called again and the GM answered. Long story short, she was able to confirm housekeeping had it safely locked in an area and she delivered it to me right away. I was concerned about the handling of the accessory as it is quite finicky but they did a wonderful job wrapping it with care. She later emailed me to ensure receipt. The honestly and efforts made is well deserving of a 5 star rating. * The room was clean. * Check-in was easy and the front desk gal was personable. She was apologetic that the bellhop person had already left for the day but would personally help me with my carry-on. I kindly declined but appreciated her offer. * I had a package delivered to front desk and they notified me and brought it to my room right away. Let me list the reasons you should not consider this hotel. No elevator in a four-floor building, no coffee maker in your room, coffee in the lobby but only when they decide to refill the pitcher, no trash can near the coffee so the counter is littered with half-full cups, no food at all, the nearest food source is blocks away, freezing AC in the lobby, hot in the hallways on the third floor because there are no doors between floors. Brick interiors so the very loud sound of your neighbor's door closing WILL wake you up. No closet for your clothes, no chair or sofa, the lighting sucks, the toilet flushing WILL wake up your wife, distance from the bed to two walls: 16 inches or so, industrial air conditioners cycling on and off outside our window, no phone in the room to contact the front desk, the AC unit was loud and freezing at the lowest setting, tripped in a poorly lit walkway, there's a large mirror just propped up against the wall in the entrance. Also many people have complained that they added charges to the bill and would not refund them. Just read the other reviews here. I wouldn't go there again if they paid me. We stayed one night for a local wedding. Booked in advance for a queen bed room. This is a small very old hotel with no elevator and the reception desk is located on the second floor. Our room was on the third floor. The room was so tiny that we had to sit in the lobby since there was no space in the room. There was a bar to hang clothes instead of a closet. The lighting was terrible both in the room and in the bathroom. No phone in the room to contact the front desk to speak to anyone about the major problem, which was the size of the bed. It was a full/double bed NOT a queen. We spoke to them twice before leaving for the evening and got the run around. They said they do not have any doubles only queens and kings but there were no available rooms to switch. They said they would send housekeeping to check (in the morning). We measured the bed and showed the manager - Donelle- a picture of me laying on the bed with my shins hanging over the edge and I am 5'1". My husband is 6'2" so it was a very uncomfortable night. Donelle said that the mattress supplier was at fault during the pandemic for the size. She said they would be correcting this in the future. The truth is that a queen bed will not fit in the room. The length will not allow passage around the end of the bed. It is barely passable now with under 2 feet. In the meantime the website has only queen and king beds listed as options. Buyer beware. They charge queen size prices for a full size bed. So we highly recommend that you do not book at this hotel based on the deceit and the discomfort. read more

The hotel was clean with fun, quirky decor, and coffee is available in the mornings in the lobby. However, that's where the positives end. There is no elevator and the rooms were too small - even for New York. The bathroom was in a short hallway with no room to put anything outside of a little shelf. Warm water takes so long to come out of the shower, I ended up turning it on and then watching TV for awhile... while the TV worked. It would regularly drop the signal so I had to reset it about a dozen times. And they don't refresh your room unless you specifically ask for it. Stayed at the Sohotel for two nights during a quick weekend trip to the Big Apple, and really can't say anything bad about our stay. Our room was very tight, but this wasn't a huge deal since we hardly spent any time in there. The staff and check-in process was smooth and seamless. They offer complimentary coffee twice a day (once in the AM and again in the PM). Located in a great part of the city close to Chinatown, Soho, and Little Italy! Quick access to major subways lines and never an issue getting an Uber. It's located off the main drags though, so nose at night was never an issue for us. (Not that it would have been as we all are from Chicago) The beds were pretty comfortable as well. No complaints there. Also did I mention it was affordable?! Especially in comparison to other hotels in the area. The hotel is very bare bones though, don't expect turn down service, or even a phone in the room to contact the front desk. Definitely has more of a hostel feel, as our room consisted of two queen beds, and one twin. It was actually perfect for us though because we had five in our party. The was no closet, or any space in the room besides the three beds. The bathroom was also very small. But hey, who comes to New York and wants to spend a weekend sitting in their hotel room? Not me! None of these were issues for us, just putting this out there for those considering staying at Sohotel, and what to expect. Sohotel has a lovely first floor lobby, with a large seating area, so when we were at the hotel preparing to go out, we hung out in this area, playing cards and pre-gaming for the night. A nice spot to hang out since the rooms don't allow for that. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the Sohotel. The hotel itself was very clean and the front desk staff friendly, HOWEVER. We had booked the hotel for the sole purpose of our group of five people to be able to be in the same room together, because of the age of the building we experienced power outages in our room after not even being there for a hour because we used the complementary blow dryer supplied in our bathroom. Ultimately our rooms had to be switched and our group separated. Not the biggest deal. The real issues are as follow: 1. When we were moved out of our original room to the two new ones the manager on duty that night told me "I had to cancel a reservation for you so that I could do this" making me feel as though I was an inconvenience to her and this entire situation was our fault. And she never offered an apology once. When the front desk employee (the kindest and most apologetic man) told us when we called to report the outage that this happens all the time when the blowdryer is used. 2. I paid a decent amount of money (I realize NYC hotels aren't cheap) to be in the one room as we were on a celebratory trip, when we had to switch rooms I was offered zero compensation or discount for the inconvenience. When I checked out I asked if there was a discount they could do and was told the general manager would contact me sometime that week to discuss. Seven months later and I've never heard a word from anyone. For the price I paid for the room that I didn't even get to stay in I'm fairly frustrated with the communication from the hotel management team. All in all. The location was very close to many of the train systems and the rest of the staff was friendly. The vibe of the hotel was very cool. KEEP IN MIND the building is very old, meaning there is no elevator at all and the wiring is shotty. Don't use the hairdryer supplied in the room, there's a very good chance you'll blow a fuse and be blamed for the inconvenience by the manager. Be warned do not expect good customer service at this establishment. First off they look at you like you do not belong, my friend was checking in to OUR room. There was a front desk lady who was wearing a sparkly club dress who kept eyeing me like ??? Can i help you?? and then later when I came downstairs to look for their bathroom he had to ask me what room number i was staying in as if I didnt pay and book a room here dont act so suspicious. The rooms are also incredibly small. They are clean and have nice bathroom products though but the only downside is the size. Do not stay on the reception level they talk loud and you can hear every conversation.we stayed on that door because of the stairs. We stayed on that floor which was 2nd floor because of stairs luggage etc. AC is right next to your head in the room so you wait her sleep in the heat or freeze your head off as it blows straight to head and ears. The huge drawback for many guest will be the lack of elevator. However the hotel has some great features. It's a Fantastic home base. 3 subway lines within easy walking distance. Chinatown/Little Italy are at your doorstep. Katz deli, Russ and Daughters, Super Moon Bakery, Xi'an Famous Foods, Nam Wah, Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles, Great NY Noodle Town(all personal favorites) are all close. Attaboy(my favorite bar/speakeasy) is within stumbling distance. The updated room 414 was super cozy with heated tile floors on the bathroom, a walk in shower, big fluffy towels, room decor with a nice mix of old brick and wood including wood floors, very soft toilet paper(not that sand paper stuff), beautiful lobbies on 2 floors, extremely friendly and helpful staff, and an open concept closet system consisting of antique pipes and shelves under the entertainment area. Drawbacks for the high maintenance travker would be: thin walls, sub par pillows, small room and bathroom(it's Manhattan and an old building that should be expected), lack of a hotel bar, the stairs, large king side bed was overly springy, no true closet and lack of views from the rooms. I'd definitely consider on my next stay in Manhattan. read more

This is a really quaint hotel. It's got a stylish charm to it. The furniture and decor are very pleasant, there's some quirky art and furniture in the common areas to keep you entertained while exploring. The building is incredibly old with so much history. They remodeled recently and it looks much better than before both inside and out. It's easy to travel to Soho, Little Italy and Chinatown from this hotel. The hotel is pretty quiet overall. Not much staff working at night but they are friendly. The downside is that there is no elevator, so if you can't walk up a few flights of stairs be sure to get a room on one of the lower levels. The upside is that there is usually plenty of street parking in this area. The rooms are kind of small but don't feel cramped. There's really no view of anything spectacular. The beds are comfortable. If you're in a single room, having guests may not the best idea unless you're cool with everyone sitting on your bed with you. Otherwise you may just want to entertain in one of the common areas for a little while. The bathrooms are really nice, shower only in most cases but I think there's a tub in the larger rooms. There is a restaurant and a bar in the immediate vicinity and you can walk a block or so to get some decent Chinese food. If you're feeling adventurous and want to walk a few more blocks you can experience one of the oldest pizzerias in New York. It's definitely a less touristy part of the area but there's still a ton to offer within walking distance. There's also a lot of art galleries in the area if you're into that. The price for a room is on the higher end, especially for this area. If you don't really care about ambiance and decor you can get a budget room in a nearby 3 star hotel for about 50$ less per night. read more

Running my own small business closely tied to the hospitality industry, I know how difficult it can be to run a business in this competitive industry. And, I hate to have to write a negative, potentially damaging review. But this needs to be said - and I hope the hotel management at Sohotel reads this review - because the rooms are meticulously designed with quality fittings and furnishings and a pleasure to stay in. However, the customer service at this hotel is horrendous. I dealt with three people at the front desk on three separate occasions when I stayed at this hotel this past weekend - all of them were equally unhelpful. I pre-paid online when I made the reservation several days prior to my stay. So, when I requested the hotel staff to allow my business associate to check in for me, I figured that they would just charge her a hold for incidentals - like any other hotel would. (I've stayed at over 100 hotels in the last 2 years- and this is standard practice in my experience.) Nope. They charged her the entire balance for the hotel stay PLUS the hold for incidentals - $868.10 in total on her card. Or, in their parlance, they said they didn't actually charge her card - they just put a "hold" on it for that amount Okay - maybe that wouldn't be that big of an issue. HOWEVER, when my business associate checked in for me, they also charged MY credit card $868.10 along with a miscellaneous unexplained $30 charge. When I called the front desk to ask why we had been DOUBLE-CHARGED for our stay, the less-than-polite lady at the front desk explained to me that the reason we had been double charged was because I had pre-checked in online and since I was not physically present when my business associate checked in for me, they had no other option but to charge HER credit card $868.10 despite the fact that they also authorized a charge of $868.10 on my card. Rather than empathize with my situation, she lectured me on how situations like this one, where I had a business associate check in on my behalf, often were a sign of fraud. And that this process of double-charging was just the hotel's policy to protect themselves from fraud. She displayed no empathy towards me whatsoever about this less-than-desirable check-in experience. When I arrived at the hotel, both my business associate and I went down to the front desk to try to have this double-charge situation resolved, the man at the front desk told me that my business associate's card had not actually been charged. According to him, it was just a hold on her credit card and that they would promptly release the hold so the money would go back to her account within 3-5 business days. Further, he gave me his word that my business associate would not get charged any additional charges on her card - as they had put the charges on my card instead. Before I left the hotel, I went again to the front desk to confirm that my business associate's card would not be charged and that any previous holds/charges were completely released. He confirmed this. Before he would let me leave, the man at the front desk attempted to charge my credit card, saying that the previous charge of $868.10 on my card had been released - so I needed to authorize yet another $868.10 charge on my card to ensure that the hotel would be properly paid. I did not have the additional $868.10 to spare on my credit card - because I had only budgeted to spend $868.10, not twice that amount. So, when my card got rejected for insufficient funds, the man at the front desk advised me to call my bank, which I did. The representative from my bank told me he was concerned because, from his end, he could NOT see that the original $868.10 had been released - it was still a pending charge. So, after 30 minutes to an hour of this going back and forth with my bank and the man at the front desk, the man at the front desk had me sign a paper authorizing the hotel to charge me $648 for the hotel stay (minus any charges for incidentals) in 3-5 days when the hold of $868.10 on my account was completely released. Less than an hour ago, my business associate said that the front desk charged her credit card because mine had rejected for insufficient funds (because the hotel was charging me $868.10 x 2 when I had only budgeted for $868.10 x 1). I really hope the hotel management takes steps to ensure that my business associate will get her money back ASAP and that a situation like this never happens again. This is the single worst hotel experience I've had - having stayed at over 100 hotels in the last 2 years. It's a shame because the hotel and its furnishings and designs are beautiful. This place is not ALL crap, but it mostly is. It is a boutique hotel, with lots of history. I like boutique hotels, they are quaint, and hospitable, and you expect small rooms in old rehabbed buildings, and good service. Let us start with the positive. The service is indeed extremely friendly. The employees do really try hard to smile, welcome you and be of service to you. The decor is trendy - if on the cheap side - with dark wood floors, exposed red brick, a mix of contemporary furniture and reclaimed junk. There is a small lobby downstairs, and the concierge is up on the second floor. This is a hotel for young people, because there is no elevator. My late 60s business partner did have a hard time getting up and down those stairs... The upstairs lobby has seating, and coffee, with a TV screen. The folks behind the counter are extremely nice. Now the bad. Rooms are upstairs, again no elevator. I have been in small rooms in NYC - again I like boutique hotels - but these are ridiculous. What they did is they took a normal boutique room and cut it in half. They are so narrow it is awkward to walk between the beds and the wall as you make your way into the room/ There are 3 beds! It's like an army barrack! Extremely loud, and very very expensive. I come to NYC often so I am not a Dorothy from Kansas when it comes to hotel pricing. For what you get here, it is not competitive ($1,000 for 2 nights in a barrack room). I would give 2 stars for the service, but I am thinking I would do my fellow Yelpers a disservice. Hidden gem in SoHo with a beautiful industrial vintage look and design. Confy room and great service. Will mostly stay again in a next trip to New York. Breakfast at Pain quotidien made it a good start on both of our days and close to the open tour bus stop. Cab ride to TimeSquare cost less than 20$. read more

What a nice hotel! It's in a quieter part of the city, which makes it easier to sleep at night as well. The staff are so helpful and kind, too. The rooms have a cozy feel, too! A few things to be wary of: the rooms might be small for some, and no breakfast is served here, which may be a dealbreaker for some people. Highly recommend! Friends: "Where are you staying?" Me: "The SoHotel." Friends: "Where??" Me: "The SO-Hotel." The hotel is "so-so", or a decent place to sleep and leave your stuff while exploring the city. It's located close to Little Italy, Chinatown, SoHo and many subway stations, which was pretty awesome. A subway station was always about five minutes away. There's a lot of eateries in the area too. I'd definitely recommend Egg Shop and Katz! My friend and I stayed in a room with one bed...the bed took up 95% of the room. It was a struggle to move my suitcase from one side of the room to the other. There was about two feet of room between the bed and the wall. I would not recommend this room if you're claustrophobic! Since it's a small hotel, the staff's face looked familiar after awhile and they were very friendly. They helped us move our luggage up and down the stairs as well as answering our questions about the city. And yes, I did say up and down the stairs. The hotel does not have an elevator, so I'd recommend you get a room on the first floor if possible. If you're looking for a place to sleep, leave your belongings, and do not really care about a fancy place, I'd recommend the SoHotel. read more

We had a great time staying at the Sohotel for three nights. The staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms and common spaces are artistically decorated. The bed was comfortable and the heated tiles in the bathroom were a welcome touch. Our room with two queens was large by city standards. There is no elevator so if you don't want to walk up and down stairs, forget this place. But the ambiance and the neighborhood make it a great choice in lower Manhattan. *FALSE ADVERTISEMENT* This place is currently under construction. It is very loud. Nothing was advertised honestly. My $240 a night "Queen-sized" room was merely a full size bed. The bathroom was for 1 person at a time- 2 adults cannot fit inside. The advertising on the Sohotel website makes it look modern and renovated. The tacky painting and scuffed walls of my room suggested it had yet to be remodeled. I am appalled that such blatant false advertisement would take place. But the WORST part was the 8:30am construction being done in the room RIGHT next door to mine, it was extremely loud. If the hotel isn't completely finished they should be honest with guests or at least be offering discounts. I will definitely not be staying at the Sohotel again, nor will I recommend it to anyone. Who cares if the LOBBY has bright ornamental design or chic modern décor, the rooms that you're overpaying for are tiny and not worth $240. My boyfriend sincerely questioned if it was a hostel. I was very embarrassed by my choice to book this room. read more

Sohotel is basically a renovated tenement which has been transformed into a boutique hotel. Despite some cool modern furniture here and there, flat screen TVs, and some interesting decor, it still feels a bit lackluster. The rooms are also very small! On the positive side its only around $100 a night, which is pretty good for NY. read more
