Today with over four hundred members the Fortnightly club focuses on education and over the years, the Club has hosted prominent speakers including Mark Twain, Henry James, Robert Frost, Isaac Stern and William Butler Yeats. More recently, guest speakers include Daniel Barenboim, Frank McCourt, Gwendolyn Brooks, Ed Pashke, Arne Duncan, Patrick Fitzgerald and Mayor Richard M. Daley. Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend the Fortnightly performance of the Chicago Bar Associations annual comedic revue which included songs and piano music satirizing current events and politics. Before the event the Fortnightly kitchen put on a very nice three course dinner starting with a chilled shrimp asian inspired salad followed by juicy roasted pork chop and finished with a chocolate dessert that capped off the dinner in style. For Chicago women seeking a place to be exposed to learning and memorable events look into the Fortnightly Club of Chicago.

They get serious vendors to show up to these events and free pour booze and provide a ton of food. That sounds fun, right? The vendors are generally told that they will get exposure to triple what actually shows to the event. The crowd is generally not as "young, rich and fabulous as he sells either. Next problem, the venue normally front a subscription to be a part of LPYP and Joel offers to split the door fee. He'll throw the event, smiles and says, "I'll swing by next week with a check." For months he disappears, his story is weak and he starts dodging phone calls. It's funny that the only way to be paid is to bring up a lawyer. And here is some more great stuff. I recently had people show up to my venue for a LPYP event. We have not allowed that group or the weezel owner on premise for nearly a year. He was selling tickets to a fake event. ALL NEW LOW. It is a shame that there are people like Joel, it is a shame that I even have to give 1 star to write a review and it is a shame the Better Business Bureau only gave him a "D-" when he epically fails to live up to a single word he says.

I attended my first YPC event in February of 2010, part of the CEO Breakfast series. It was well…read moreattended, around 40 people or so, who joined me in the early hour for coffee, networking, and to hear the CEO of a multinational firm speak about his experience and rise to the title. The CEO was very engaging, and spoke to us on a very real, and down to earth level; no posturing or puffing. When he closed his speech, we were invited to speak to him further, and we networked as we waited our turn to ask him questions. When I finally met him, I told him a little about myself; who I was as a young professional and what I wanted to do. We exchanged business cards, and he actually took my resume, right there! Four weeks later, I was working in that very CEO's firm, and was promoted in just a year. I'm proud to say that I still work for this company, and truly believe that attending that YPC event, and being prepared to network, attributed to my success in my current role. I made several connections that day, and almost 3 years later, we remain in touch. Because I believe in YPC, I joined the professional development committee and have been working ever since to see others reap the same benefits I have from the organization. Note: These events are only as fruitful as you make them. You can't just come and stand there. You have to be purposeful and willing to make real connections with people who can help you, or who you can help. That's what networking is. Exposure to CEOs, Managing Directors and other executives is a key benefit of professional development events. Take advantage!
