Located on Michigan Avenue, this club for artisans and creative members of the community has the one of the best unubstructed views of views of the lakefront. From the terrace, one can see the Shedd Aquarium down to the Millenium Park. The dining options are modest but there's a fine collection of alcoholic beverages. I came here for a private party on Friday night in order to help raise money for charity. Riding the elevator up to the 22nd floor felt like I was going to a secret club. As soon as I got off the elevator, I was surrounded by this wonderful, classy space. I really like the old wood feel on the walls, old pictures hanging on the wall, and the big fireplace. As soon as you step out on the balcony, you can see everything from Millennium Park to the museums to the lake front. The views here are spectacular (during the day and night)! The bar was serving free drinks all night and there was a band playing. The food was also very good. There were cheese and meat platters, curry chicken on a stick, crab cake balls, samosas, and strawberries with cream. I would love to come back here soon! read more

Love the view, love the artists, musicians and architects...love the Cliff Dwellers! The Cliff Dwellers is a surprisingly affordable niche private club, on the top floor of 200 South Michigan. The monthly dues are about the same as a loop area gym membership: I see this Club as a gym membership for my brain. The private events members (and their guests) can access here are excellent. Private theater performances, musical performances, book club meetings (with the author present), architectural lectures, journalistic interviews of political candidates, sabrage lessons (yes, members got to do it, not just watch)...there are typically 1-3 amazing events offered per week! Tip: after joining, sign up for the substantial discount granted to members, at the Grant Park parking garage. This discount is good any time (not just when attending events at the Club). Tip: after joining, ask about members' access to purchase limited edition bourbons. The recent single cask offering sold out to members quickly: one bottle was sold to the Club. When visiting, it's worth purchasing a shot or pour while it's still available at the bar. read more

What a wonderful close knit club with so many artists. The members are warm and friendly, employees are gentle and helpful. The view is breathtaking overlooking Lake Michigan. We were here for their annual Christmas celebration. A buffet lunch starting with fresh crab claws, raw oysters, jumbo shrimp and smoked salmon. Delicious. We went here for a private event. The cliff dwellers Club is a private club it was originally founded in 1907 by members of the Chicago Arts community. The purpose of the club is to bring together men and women who are practicing, or interested in the Arts. The club occupied the space above Orchestra Hall from 1909 to 1996, when the cliff dwellers moved to the penthouse of 200 South Michigan Avenue, across from the Art Institute of Chicago and next door to the Symphony Center. It is located on the 22nd floor and the space includes a permanent collection of art and other memorabilia, an art gallery for temporary exhibits, a piano for musical performances, a lounge area featuring artifacts from the old Clubhouse, a bar overlooking the clubs magnificent view of Chicago's lakefront, and outdoor Terrace, and a private dining room. We were there on a beautiful day and we had drinks and food and the outdoor Terrace where we were able to enjoy the gorgeous views of Chicago's Lakefront. They do rent out the space for meetings and weddings. I do know that you need to be referred by a current member member in order to become a member. They do offer a 3 month trial membership for $150. If you're ever invited to the cliff dwellers club for any occasion, be it a Meetup / meeting / wedding, be sure to go, this is a real treat. read more

The Cliff Dwellers Club is a 117 year old private club which has always been located on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. It is currently located at 200 S. Michigan Ave. This is a club that centers around people who have an interest in the arts, but that does not mean you need to be an artist. The club does regularly have art installations. There is food service for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday. There is a chef, and the food and service are excellent. There is also a full bar. It is meant to be a friendly place where people sit with their friends and talk about absolutely everything, while they drink and dine in a beautiful interior entirely surrounded by windows, our outdoors on the 22nd floor veranda. The view from the 22nd floor overlooking Grant Park is spectacular! I was here as part of event hosted by a MeetUp group and it was a great spot to be.Rooftop gives you an amazing view of the skyscrapers ,chicago Bean and the Lake.It is on the 22nd floor.The bar is not to big but sufficient enough.The decor is pretty Minimalistic with paintings,books and with some antiques. Food was ok but the rooftop pretty much makes for all of it.Seems like a good choice for a Date.Better to go around 6pm and stay till close in order to view the day/night view. It makes me happy as hell to update this review. Last Saturday, myself and a fabulous man went to a completely elegant wedding ceremony/reception for two friends of mine. It was wonderful. This venue. I think it's been updated and remodeled a bit, while keeping the character of the original space. The janky, small bar has been replaced with a longer bar with several chairs. Very nice. It's now the best bar in Chicago. The room itself looks the same, except for maybe new wood blinds on the windows, which gave the room a sleek, elegant feel. Very nicely done. The small library is the same, and still great. The bride and groom brought their own champagne and wine, so maybe you won't get to sip Veuve out on the magnificent terrace. But, I did, and I loved it. The food. I was wondering if the CD staff kitchen would be catering the dinner and was slightly nervous. However, they did cater it, and it was just fantastic. An array of salads and vegetables and some delicious beef tenderloin, cooked just right. Score. The staff was friendly and great, and did a great job. I am so happy to see this place apparently sharpened up and got rid of some of the shabby. I mean . . . a private club that caters to architects and the arts? They should have the greatest clubhouse in town! They do. They do. I can't wait to come back. This is now (again) one of the greatest venues in Chicago. So chic and urban. Oh *psst* - the only flaw is they might thing about upgrading the wines at the bar. Beringer?! That is grocery store wine . . . maybe step that up just a little. Cliff Dwellers has become my very "happy place" in the city of Chicago. I am so proud to be a member of this wonderful club, where the moment you step in, you feel welcomed. It feels like a family. The food is always so delicious, anything that I come to order, dinner or lunch, it is satisfying and perfectly made. Chef Victor really puts in a special touch. All the servers are so hard-working here and so attentive to the needs of those dining. Michelle is fabulous and a lovely addition to the Cliff Dwellers crew. I enjoy the monthly special events at the club as well, including the musicians that visit and authors. I was enjoying an excellent view from the terrace, although today was oppressively hot, I felt (or imagined) a cool Lake Michigan breeze on my face. Here, the venue for artists and musicians in the city is welcoming and relaxing. The portraits and sculpture work remind one of an art-lover's club, the friendly chats are reminiscent of a university discussion on the arts, an element missing in pretentious city clubs trying to appear erudite. In a city of spectacular views, this is among the most spectacular, not so much because of its height, but because of the perfect placement, centered on Michigan avenue overlooking The Art Institue. The historical feel of the interior has been preserved during a move from an earlier location. We had a pleasant lunch here at the start of an historic tour. read more

Utterly breathtaking view of the City of Chicago! Wow, the Cliff Dwellers Club have one of the best views of the city. I came here for a professional function I was blown away by the great patio overlooking the best part of the city. I could see the whole of Millenium Park and the Bean looked as small as the Tiffany bean necklace, just as shiny too. Turning in one direction, I could see Grant Park, Buckingham Fountain, and Adler Planetarium. The patio experience felt like I was looking at a landscape picture found in a Chicago souvenir shop and my eyes were the camera lens capturing the scenery. I enjoyed the views while sipping on some cabernet and later a sangria and talking with some colleagues. The food's pretty good too. I sampled some tasty appetizers. I had a nice cucumber round topped with shrimp and dill. I ate a quiche like appetizer and a lovely beef kabob. For the dinner, I had the grilled veggies and a couscous side topped with pinenuts and dried cranberries. The veggies were cooked well and were filling. For dessert, I had a freaking awesome chocolate mousse in a chocolate shell plated with a side of fresh berries. The mousse was richy and chocolately especially when enjoyed with the double chocolate punch of the shell. Mmm, dessert rocked! I'm so happy that I got a chance to visit this neat club with its stunning views and great company. I'd say that it was a pretty nice night. read more

Old school hardwood floors lead you from the elevators to an understated area that just begs for contemplation. This space is dedicated to and for people who care about the arts and humanities. If you are fortunate enough to have the privilege to be here, you will not be disappointed. Do not expect overstated elegance, grandeur, nor pompousness. You will not find them here. You will find an attentive waitstaff, well cooked and served food, and exceptional views. The large and sweeping view from this 22nd floor establishment offers glimpses of many Chicago attractions. Millennium park, the museum campus, the art instiute are all offered on a platter for your eyes. If you choose to look inward, you have the option of the terrace or comfy chairs in the reading nook. Well presented pieces decorate the room and invite contemplation. A few native American pottery pieces are also tucked away for your searching eyes to behold. Updike sums the Cliff Dwellers Club in a simple statement. While it was not written for this space- it certainly works. In large urban cities, an oasis for thought is often hard to come by. I had my wedding here in June 2016, and it was absolutely perfect here. The manager worked with us leading up to the day, and gave us great advice about how to schedule the day, how many appetizers to serve, etc. Everyone who worked there was lovely and accommodating, making sure everything was just right. The food was amazing. We'd eaten there a few times, once when we were checking it out as a venue, and once for a tasting prior to selecting our menu. Everything was served to perfection on our day, and we got a lot of compliments about the food. Every single appetizer was eaten, which I will take as a ringing endorsement. They whipped up a tasty sangria as well, which was a hit with all the guests. The view, well...there's not much I can say that the pictures don't. It was beautiful. Everyone was blown away by it. Lastly, as a perfect touch, the night ended with the fireworks off of Navy Pier. All in all, it was the perfect night, and I'm glad I got to have it here. read more

Attended a surprise b-day party last Saturday and it was fun, fun, fun, albeit the buffet area was too well lit for my taste. How cool, after 100 years of high society exclusivity, I am the one to be the first to review the Club. According to the website, "The Cliff Dwellers predominantly are Chicago-area residents who have a serious interest in the arts. Many are, or have been, actively engaged in music, painting, writing, acting, architecture, design, and related categories. Some are directly involved in arts education and a substantial percentage of the membership consists of business men and women who support the arts through their regular attendance at concerts, theater events, art exhibitions, or humanities lectures, for example, or via financial sponsorship." I of course was invited for two events: 1) My graduation from the Rush Neurology Residency in 2007, and 2) The annual neurology meeting reunion for Rush staff. I really don't know of another place that has such a stunning view; Millenium park in all its microscopic glory (you can see the whole outline from above) with its surrounding buildings, the art institute directly across the street, and Grant park to the south, all framed by the lake. I am disheartened to discover the low quality of management at The Cliff Dwellers Club. In very poor taste, I was refused access for even a minute to view artwork by my great great grandfather, John Warner Norton, an iconic Chicago muralist. One would imagine there would be more appreciation for the origin of their decor. read more
