Fortunately, the Bridgeport Art Center has easy parking, since I'm coming from the Northside after work. They have sewing machines and materials along with great, knowledgeable staff. And the location is super cool to boot. Give yourself a few extra minutes to find their studio and follow the instructions they provide, the place is huge!

Many of the Artist are teen and their work is totally awesome and powerful. They also have another fund raising event coming up now hold your britches the tickets are $750 but remember it's a fund raising event. Now if that is too much for you because I know it is for me. Every room had something going on, from crafts, poetry reading, a movie screening, snacks. I love the video projector room, a mixture of hand-made art and larger than life video projections. I envy places that can do free wine, but since the younger-than-21 demographic visits and contributes the art sometimes, it appears alcohol is purchase only. I would love to come back for a girls night event, and even have my kids try one of her beginners' sewing classes.

The center is very nicely laid out. We arrived and observed a table with more information about the events taking place in the center. We had a short while before the event so we relaxed on the wide stairs (like bleacher seats) with pads for sitting. This gave us a nice view of the campus, but the area is also used for movie screenings. There are probably other rooms in the area that are used for the technical/technological advances and inventions that the namesake Kaplan was known for, but we were just there for the book discussion. We proceeded to the room, which was laid out nicely with chairs, a stage and microphones. It was a nice discussion and a good venue for the event. I liked the Women's room bathrooms with the sanitary logos on the door, to indicate that free sanitary items were available in there!

I honestly had a great time there and I think the space really gave an opportunity for all the art to be displayed, especially the sketches for local beer labels. The only downside was the line for the bathrooms-which was probably the longest line there.

This is unique, because most research institutes focus on an area of study rather than a technique, but McCrone desires instead to educate scientists in how to work better with microscopy and they do this in the same humble building they've been in since their founding, near some of Chicago's most-respected medical research and clinical institutions but seperate, independent, and while cutting-edge, still quaint (in a good way) in their dedication to the noble microsope. What McCrone does is really a national service: microscopy is still in a process of evolution and involves complex techniques that are best passed by mentor to student in a lab setting or, as McCrone does, taught in specific coursework. That type of coursework isn't something you get in most dedicated graduate programs be these in microbiology, neuroscience, materials engineering or whatever else. Having a dedicated institution offering this training and backing it with decades of expertise is a real benefit to science in general.
