I had the very unfortunate opportunity to see Dr. Sergey Zemlyansky for dental care. During my…read moreexam he informed me that a molar needed a root canal. I had never had a root canal and my teeth were/are very healthy overall. He said that he could do the procedure himself, in-office and would even reduce his 'normal' fee to make it more affordable. With some reluctancy and fear, and reassurance from Dr. Sergey, I agreed to the root canal. The very next day, the tooth was causing extreme pain and my face began to swell. The following day, (Wednesday before Thanksgiving) I returned to see Dr. S. because the pain had increased to an unbearable level and the swelling was now the size of a baseball. He prescribed a stronger antibiotic and more pain medication and sent me home. In my life, I have never felt the pain I did from this procedure. Missing Thanksgiving with family altogether, I went to the emergency room as I couldn't bear the pain a minute longer. More pain med and back home until Sunday. Sunday, the swelling had grown to a large orange size - the entire side of my face and the pain was unbelievable. I was given IV pain medication and after an MRI, I had emergency surgery to drain the abscess and spent the night in the hospital. The surgeon said it was one of the worst infections from a dental procedure he had ever seen. I texted with Dr. S. from the hospital, upset, angry, scared. He agreed to 'give me my money back', and explained that he had only started the root canal, not finished it yet. That was the first time I had heard that. Jump ahead to my visit with a QUALIFIED dentist, who after examining me, said the root canal was not done correctly and that much of the pulp and nerves were left in the tooth, hence the infection. He in fact, was shocked at the results and asked if I had possibly had it done in 'another country', and couldn't understand WHY a root canal had been needed at all and certainly IF it were done it would have been done in ONE apn't. Wow. Ultimately, I had to have another, proper root canal at TUFTS, where the surgeons there said it may not be possible to save the tooth, because it looked like whoever did the first one took "too much of the tooth" and not enough of what he was supposed to, but the procedure was done and completed. Several months later, the tooth broke. It broke so much so that a crown wasn't possible. Now, I have had what was a perfectly fine tooth pulled. This process continues years on. I've endured extreme pain - unbelievable pain from a VERY botched root canal from Dr. Sergey Zemlyansky in Gloucester, MA. I LOST a tooth, nerve damage on my lip, TMJ pain and now the cost of a tooth replacement ahead. This has been an honest and unbelievable nightmare of an experience. I CANNOT recommend this dentist; in fact I would council ANYONE thinking of seeing him for anything to reconsider.

The staff was friendly, but what I expected to be a consultation felt more like a push toward having a root canal than a discussion of all available options. After the appointment, I decided to get a second opinion before proceeding with treatment. Two different dental offices requested my 3D CT scan from this office so they could properly evaluate my situation. Both offices told me they never received it. I paid for that scan, and I was trying to make an informed decision about a significant dental procedure. Instead, I found myself unable to get other specialists the information they needed to fully evaluate my case. Whether intentional or not, the result was the same: it made getting a second opinion far more difficult than it should have been. My advice to anyone considering treatment here: if they take imaging, ask for a copy before you leave the office. Do not assume it will be sent later if you decide to seek another opinion. Patients deserve access to their own diagnostic information and the ability to explore treatment options without obstacles. Unfortunately, that was not my experience.
