This is the kind of store that I want every store to be. Susan and Carl are wonderful designers, full of knowledge and passion. They have an amazing selection of jewelry for every budget - all of it artisan-crafted and unique. We have purchased many pieces from them over the years, the latest being matching eternity bands for our wedding. Not only did they find us just the right rings, but Susan went out of her way to get the right size made(!!) and shipped up from the designer in Los Angeles in time for our wedding. They take such pride and pleasure in connecting people with the right piece of jewelry. We love them and are customers for life. read more

We went to Mill Valley while on a business trip to San Francisco and stopped in at Sophia Jewelry. We saw a couple of pieces in the window and the owner got them out to show us. While we were checking them out, she noticed one of my rings and said she thought her husband had made it. We bought the ring in Aspen in 1979. She took a picture of it and her husband identified it as the 5th ring he ever made. I get so many compliments on the ring and it is my favorite. We also purchased 2 beautiful cuffs to commemorate our upcoming 36th anniversary. My sister-in-law also purchased a gorgeous quartz ring several days later. Susan was wonderful and this won't be our last purchase from Sophia Jewelry! read more

Perfect. The best way to describe the quality, selection and especially Carl, Susan and Sophie. My husband and I walked by the store and fell in love with an anniversary wedding band for him. We went into the store and it was magical! That evening they had Lesley Nicol, who plays Mrs. Patmore in the British PBS series Downton Abbey, as a special guest! She was delightful, and proudly showed off a ring Carl had designed for her years ago. While we were there we also picked out a gorgeous diamond band for me to celebrate our 20th anniversary. We're having it customized, so it should be ready in a few weeks. Can't wait! read more

Sofia Jewelry is hands down the best!!!! I have purchased a unique special piece, I have had them custom make a piece, and I've had them replace a center stone on my most favorite ring. They are brilliant and so kind! I was so nervous to have my fav ring in someone else's possession... Not only did they pick the perfect stone for it, but they were so sweet about checking in with me every step of the way! The ring I just designed with them is even more perfect then I could have ever imagined. It's so rare to find jewelers who can create your vision! I would have no hesitation recommending them to anyone no matter what your style is. ...Each of my rings are so different! I also love that it's a family run business ...you can feel the love and care put into everything they do... And they make you feel apart of the family. Thank you Sofia Jewelry for everything!!!! read more

My husband recently bought me a lovely rose cut diamond ring for our anniversary from Sofia Jewelry. Well I picked it out actually, but the bottom line is, when it came in, it was special order, I had misgivings about the color. I just didn't love it. The owners worked with me to get me something I loved. They ended up exchanging the original ring for the same style but a different color. What was really nice is that they went out of their way to help me even when it meant they had to keep the original ring in their inventory, in my size (supplier would not take back). As a local Mill Valley resident I am happy to say that I will always support local small businesses for this reason. The owners know how to extend good customer service and they take pride in what they do. read more

Love Sofia Jewelry. Edie and I have given and received many bracelets for our best girlfriends over the years. I recently lost a little dangle charm and called Susan. She sent me a new one for free. Great to work with and their jewelry is beautiful. I get compliments all the time. Even on a flight, a woman noticed my bracelets and she knew they were from Sofia in Mill Valley! read more

My (now) fiancee and I blundered into this jewelry shop on a whim after a hike. We'd been to a couple of other boutique jewelry shops in trendier places, so we had never been to a jewelry shop like this one. Wait, I hear you cry, isn't this just another boutique jewelry shop in a trendy-ish place? The short answer is no. At this point, I'll split my review into two parts: emotional and rational/practical. Emotional The main difference between this store and any other is the folks who run it. They understand they're not selling you a ring - they're helping you craft a symbol of your love for another person that cannot be quantified. Carl and Susan both do an amazing job of understanding the underlying feelings that jewelry can evoke and they work with you to help realize this feeling. In addition, the entire staff of mostly family members make you feel like mostly family within minutes. Practical Sofia's is not the cheapest shop around (sidenote: do you really want to be known as the guy who bought a ring from the cheapest shop around?), but they know their stuff, have access to top talent, and they're wonderful to deal with. They know how to make every person feel unique and individual without being stuffy or overbearing. In my fiancee's case, she wanted a ring similar to one in the shop, except different in most details. No problem, Sofia's let us work directly with the designer, only stepping back in when I asked them for help with the final delivery arrangements. As you can tell, I'm struggling to express how much I enjoyed my experience. It was more flawless than any diamond... read more

What a wonderful place to view and buy jewelry. A true family business upholding extremely high standards in beautiful design and elegance. The finely curated selection of world class artists and craftsmen/women show an exceptional eye and passion for the trade. What you might find surprising though, is that Lucas, the son and current manager of the store is also a gifted designer himself. If you spot a piece that is standing out from the rest with effortless beauty and exquisite sophistication - chances are he designed it. I will continue to visit just to see his future work. The best shopping experience I've had this year too. I can't recommend it highly enough. read more

I had such a great experience at Sofia tonight! A beautiful selection of jewels, and very unique gift ideas. Fantastic customer service!

I absolutely love Sofia Jewelery. I've never been a jewelry person until my fiancé and I had visited Sofia. I fell in LOVE with a yellow diamond halo ring that we visited every time we were in Mill Valley. Turns out, Lucas and my fiancé had been working together to size the ring (asap) so he could propose. We've been back several times. Purchasing our wedding bands, (and then some ). I will forever purchase all of my jewelery at Sofia. They have turned my jewelry unknowingness into full blown Love . read more

My fiancé had my engagement and wedding rings custom designed by Carl, it was a wonderful experience and the rings came out wonderfully, because the experience was so good and the products so beautiful I purchased my wedding earrings from Sofia Jewelry as well and Carl designed a beautiful pendent to go with them. Every experience I have had with this store has been positive, they carry beautiful jewelry and the custom work they do is superb. They are truly artists. read more

I am beyond amazed! I brought in a 'well-worn' platinum, ruby and diamond ring that needed a lot of work ... and when I picked it up today I felt the same excitement about the ring that I had felt years ago when my husband bought it for me in Australia. They truly 'restored' it back to it's original beauty--and I couldn't be happier or more satisfied. They are an amazing family of jewelers who take such great pride in their work. They also understand that customer service breeds loyalty...and I will be back there again and again. I would give them more stars if I could! read more

I have had jewelry repaired here in the past and they did a beautiful job. A few months ago, I took a Tiffany necklace to be repaired. It seemed that a piece was lost in the process. I was certain that I had brought it in with the necklace. The owner could tell that I was upset and said that though they had never lost anything in the past she was make the piece for me at no cost. Wonderful customer service! As I was walking home, I started to panic. She was very kind and what if it was me?! I do have 3 young kids and I am often scattered. I ran home and began to scour my place and sure enough, it was there. I called and apologized profusely. Once again, the owner was very kind and understanding. They are very good honest people who make beautiful jewelry. I never post on Yelp, but felt local Marin and Mill Valley should definitely stop by Sofia Jewelry. read more

Can't say enough about this wonderful family-run business. Lucas is an absolute doll - kind, patient, thoughtful, talented. Great attention to detail. He helped me to transform an antique ruby stick pin into a beautiful pendant for my niece's graduation; I have returned with additional pieces for which he has given me great ideas. And, of course, the displays! Got my eye on a number of beauties! Just look at all of these reviews. I would recommend Sofia to anyone and everyone! read more

Visiting Mill Valley for the first time, Sofia Jewelry's window caught my eye. It held unique, elegant and high quality pieces. I went in to try on a ring I saw in the window and was immediately impressed by Lucas. He was welcoming and knowledgeable. I tried on several pieces and fell in love with a Sethi Couture ring. I wanted to discuss with my husband so Lucas wrote all the information down for me and within an hour I was back. I love the ring. Happy 10th Anniversary. I would highly recommend Sofia Jewelry. read more

My husband has purchased jewlery for me here at least twice. The earrings were gorgeous! And I wear my necklace daily. I used to wear my earrings everyday too until I lost one on Mt. Tamalpais, boo hoo. Everything in the store is perfect, very in style, and it will be hard to choose just one. Today I popped in to look, and now have a wish list of at least three pair of earrings and there was a bracelet in the window, just WOW. All items are first class, no junk. So be prepared to pay for good quality. Believe me it's all worth it. I get comments about my necklace constantly. read more

I have had jewelry designed here and had repair work done also - they are very good. I will use them again - it is wonderful to have they adjust or repair jewelry that has been past down to me from my Mother or other relatives. read more

I have owned jewelry from Sophia since before there was Yelp. I have been complimented on it from Mumbai to Hong Kong to Paris to San Francisco. I wear it every day, everywhere, while doing everything. If it breaks, they will fix it - and polish it so it looks brand new! Small but excellent. Buy your jewelry there. You won't be sorry. read more

It was the middle of June and I still hadn't found the perfect ring for my husband. We were getting married in August. My mom gave me a magazine which featured beautiful rings at Sofia Jewelry in Mill Valley. I checked out the website. I was disappointed that they were closed during construction. I sent a quick email to Susan, one of the owners. She replied instantly and set up a time where we could meet and see the Jerry Spaulding collection. She was able to get the ring to us quicker and was friendly and helpful during the whole process. We really love his ring and are happy to have worked with Sofia Jewelry. Thank you! read more

This is a marvelous shop, one of the few that has been in town for as long as I've lived here. Carl and his wife Susan carry beautiful jewelry, some of which are his own designs - - he is known for his beautiful silver bracelets. Items range from earrings for under $100 to stunning and unique pieces that are out of my budget. If you don't see what you want, Carl will work with you to design and make your own special piece. They treat all customers with genuine care and warmth, regardless of how much you have to spend. It is a real treat to know there are still places to purchase lovely, interesting jewelry from kind, caring people. read more

There is something special about getting your jewelry from a family owned store that takes great pride in their work. I first worked with Lucas to select two additional bands to add to my wedding ring. He helped me to select two gorgeous diamond rose gold eternity bands which were exactly what I was looking for. I returned recently with the hopes of getting a custom necklace with the initials and birthstones of my children. Lucas was amazing to work with from start to finish. He emailed me 4 original design options and sent me a CAD image of my favorite. He thoughtfully incorporated each of my children's birthstones in the design. He listened to my ideas and so easy to work with. Before I knew it I had the finished product in my hand, perfect and beautiful, exactly what I wanted. Thank you Sofia Jewelry! read more

There are many jewelers in Mill Valley to choose from, but Sophia Jewelers is absolutely the BEST!!! The family run business makes you feel right at home immediately when you walk in. I am new to the community and no idea where to go. I had enjoyed walking past their beautiful windows and loved everything in it. So, I had some jewelry that needed repairing and they went above and beyond. Calling me before they started the work, told me the price, so there were no surprises, which I have experienced in the past with other jewelers. The finished product made my ring look the way it did on the day I got engaged to my husband 19 years ago. I would go to no other jeweler in Marin County!!! read more

I have been a devoted and happy customer of Sofia Jewelry since the 1990s, when I bought my first Sofia bracelet at the Palo Alto Street Fair. Since then I have expanded my collection of sterling silver Chiara bracelets, earrings, and even a necklace and ring. In 2008 my husband surprised me with a 10th anniversary gift of a magnificent yellow sapphire and diamond pendant he saw in the window of their beautiful Mill Valley shop -- and last weekend, we picked up a custom-designed ring that Carl helped us to create with two little emeralds. Over all these years, I have experienced the warmth and welcoming spirit of Carl and Susan, and, more recently, their son Lucas and daughter Sofia. Entering their shop is like going into an enchanted jewel-box, one that is both comforting and tempting all at once. I can not recommend this store highly enough -- everything you will see is of exquisite taste, unique and beautiful! Absolutely the best! read more

I love this store and agree that I wished all stores were like this one. We happened upon them one day when we were strolling in Mill Valley; I was intrigued because I loved everything in the window display. At the time we were looking for a citrine ring as a "push present" for when my daughter was to be born in November (citrine is the birthstone). Carl and Lucas were so lovely and told us they would be happy to help us to design a ring respecting our price range (which, admittedly, was on the more modest side). From there, Lucas ordered several lovely stones for us to chose from and then designed a gorgeous ring, checking in with us all along the way (first with the design, then the wax model). We just picked it up today and I couldn't be happier with it; it is exactly what I imagined but also more beautiful than I could have ever imagined! It feels wonderful to have this unique, beautiful ring to mark this special occasion in our lives and it was such a fun, positive experience designing it with Lucas. We will definitely be using them as our jeweler from now on and I look forward to working with this family owned business to mark the special events in our family! read more

I have lived in Mill Valley for almost 17 years but hadn't really been into precious jewelry until recently. After a tantalizing look in Tiffany's, with all things gorgeous, I decided to hedge my bets and look local, knowing that half of what you pay for at Tiffany's is that little blue box. So I paid my first serious visit to Sofia last fall. I immediately fell in love with a ring set by Sethi Jewelers, a local designer who makes vintage-feeling but modern pieces. Not only was the ring less than a third of the price of the Tiffany ring I was considering, but we also found a wonderfully understated but interesting ring for my husband, designed by the owners' son Lucas, as well as a well-priced pair of diamond studs for moi. (All together still less than the cost of that Tiffany ring.) What I discovered over the several visits was that this is truly a family-run business. The owners Susan and Carl are delightful, helpful people whose passion for their products is matched by their friendliness. On fire after our purchase, I decided to do something I had wanted to do for years: have my original wedding set (upgraded some years ago) reset into something wonderful. My 1/2 solitaire on a simple yellow gold band and matching diamond wedding band could surely be reimagined, but I had no idea how. I brought rings in and met with Carl, who immediately began to sketch. And what he designed was something I never could have envisioned. The next step was to have an artist create a CAD drawing, a realistic 3D image of the design. He was able to quickly make a couple changes and once I gave the OK, the design went into production. I love pretty things. I mean, I REALLY love pretty things, but I am not particularly sentimental about material objects. But when I laid my eyes on the final product, my eyes filled with tears and I lost my breath. I was overwhelmed. Carl and Susan said they'd had the same reaction when the ring was complete. So now I wear on my right hand a ring given with love and then remade with love into something I will continue to cherish. I enjoyed every moment of the process with Carl and Susan. They are lovely people in every way. I can't recommend Sofia highly enough. Whether you want to look at pretty things for the sheer joy of it, are in the market for something special for yourself or a gift, or interested in a custom design, you thoroughly enjoy your visit to Sofia. read more

We loved the jewelry of an NYC jeweler but living in west Marin, we wanted to use a local jeweler for our wedding rings. It was by sheer coincidence and luck that we parked in front of Sophia Jewelry. Carl and Lucas the father and son team at Sophia could not have been more helpful, creative or fun. My wife designed her beautiful organic looking ring with Carl and what they came up with in their collaboration is extremely stylish, functional and beautiful. Home run. I'm a visual artist and had very particular ideas...Carl suggested that I take a hunk of wax and in his words"have at it" and loaned me some carving tools. At that moment, I knew that Carl and Sophia were the right choice for us! My friend is a jewelry student at the College of Marin, who carved me a very cool tribal looking ring in rose gold. When I returned showed Carl, he was really impressed and suggested setting a single diamond in it. My custom ring is amazing and I love it. Hire Sophia if you want a worry free and uber creative jewelry buying experience. read more
