She buys and refinishes quality furniture and does a nice job. No "shabby" sheik here. The artwork from a local artist upstairs is good too. You can tell the owner is picky about what she offers. Funny story...I am an artist of sorts and am out here on the Cape caring for a family member. My friends asked me if I'd painted anything interesting since I got here and I said, "like what?" One said, "we'll, any rocks or sea shells?" So when I met the owner and she asked if I was looking for anything special, I said, "Well, since you asked, do you have any large cape sea shells?" (Just expecting her to laugh.) But she said, "just a minute" and then came back with two large clam shells she and her husband had gathered from the bay last summer. She gave them to me for free. I'll post a picture of what I painted and sent to my friend.

The store also boasts original artwork - canvas paintings, drawings, etchings - and everything is Cape Cod accented. I loved the coffee cup set made from porcelain, set in a light sea blue glaze with one simple outlined drawing of a small whale. It was so simple, yet so cute. What's more is the fact that everything is functional. I picked up said mugs and the weight and size were perfectly in proportion, so I knew they wouldn't break after a few uses. I bought some shells beautifully and creatively packaged in a small clear Chinese food take out box accented with a little blue ribbon. For my boyfriend, I bought some sea salt scrub that can be used to ease muscle tension. The packaging was just as cute and the smell was subtle and refreshing. I also bought a hand made hanging ornament made of three different nautilus shells tied together on a line of very fine string. It was beautiful! The owner of the store was working the cash register, and she could not have been nicer. She helped me find what I was looking for, and she packaged my purchases up with great care. Then as you walk around the store, you can see pottery at all stages of its production. Bonus for me: the day I was there, Kevin was talking to his high school art teacher who inspired him to go into this field. It was so nice to see the mentor/mentee relationship, and from their conversation is sounds like Kevin is paying this forward with some youngins. The pottery is lovely, but the best places are all about the people behind the art, and Barnstable Pottery is one of those places.

Now I, being a fan, enthusiast and novice artist myself always have a special place in my heart for a pottery studio. When I walked in with my two partners in crime, we found the studio owner sitting at one of 4 wheels trimming pieces and enjoying the wonderful sunny day. There was a basset hound lounging on the floor and a charming woman keeping him company. Walking in you are immediately at ease, listening to the fountain made of thrown pieces and other parts as it playfully blows to each part. There are combination pieces making castles of all sizes in addition to other functional pieces. Mugs, vases, bowls, other little jars and containers. The castles themselves were impressive and obviously he has a considerable amount of time vested in each. I had even seen a bowl I was sure was hand build slab work but low and behold it was a huge, shallow bowl that had obvious signs of thrown work. There were even small oil lamps he had thrown and built. I almost regret not purchasing anything. Then we got to talking. He was welcoming and laid back almost as you would expect anyone to be who enjoys cape life. He was full of knowledge about all sorts of other things and even directed us to great lunch spots and a coffee house he raved about in the village. We had to have chatted for over an hour while admiring the style of his art that surrounded us. As we were hurrying out the door to get to the coffee shop before it close, we promised to be back. And next time I am NOT leaving empty handed.
