I'm from Champaign and I'm just passing through. So glad we found this place on yelp! I am blown away by this place! Wow! It's a hidden gem in Peoria, IL!! The flavor profiles are amazing! It was so fast too! My main dish was the Social Tater + egg. Wowowow. Oliver is a sweet and generous owner! Loves to chat Will definitely come back to this spot next time we come around! Everyone ate 3 tacos and one of my boys ate 5 tacos and a cookie! There's one in Bloomington people! Check it out!

Wow, we were pleasantly surprised with how tasty this place was. We had lunch and enjoyed every morsel. The fish and ground beef tacos are great. The pozole soup was great. Definitely will visit again.

I'm already obsessed with birria tacos in general so I HAD to try the birria quesadilla and it was SO juicy & tasty! LOVED. It was the best meal after a long day's of work.

So delicious, so fresh... priced very reasonable. That spicy chicken masala was one of the best tacos I've ever had... soooo delicious, and not spicy which is good for me!

The service provided was good. The quality of the food surpassed that of Taco Bell. However, it did not leave a lasting impression. It is unlikely that I will revisit in the future.

Super great service and tacos! We had the buffalo taco, the roasted chicken taco, and chips and queso. Just got better with each bite! The restaurant was super clean. Wasn't busy when we were there so nice and quite. Music isn't the greatest. But that's the worst thing I can say! For sure will be back!

Immediately greeted upon entering which was so nice! I ordered the Birria Quesadilla and chips and guacamole. Food came fast and was very delicious and flavorful. There was a lot of different types of food on the menu other than tacos which was interesting. Inside is clean and has lots of LED signs and bright colors. Would recommend and come back!

I was a little confused when first arriving opening the door to a number of bakers racks in the middle of the floor - it felt like you were entering the 'back door'. There was also a slightly unsettling 'alarm' that rang as the door was opened, not your typical 'ding dong' of a shop door. I picked up 5 pieces of tres leches cake - $4 a piece... a definite value! The gentleman behind the counter diligently and carefully packed each dripping moist piece of cake into its own to go box. Each piece of cake is topped with a glazed strawberry half - the cake was absolutely delightful. Moist, creamy, utterly delicious! I will definitely be back and highly recommend!

Review Visit: June 27th, 2013…read more The place for Mexican baked goods in Peoria. Laura and Matt told me about this little bakery in Peoria that I had to check out. So, doing what I do, I told them to meet me there the next chance we go. We grabbed Tim along the way and headed there for some baked goodies. I will admit that I had no idea what the place was when I was told about it. All I heard was a Mexican bakery I need to check out. I didn't know what to expect but what we experienced was definitely not what I imagined. Most bakeries, when you think of them, are those glass display cases loaded up with tons of bakery items. Breads, cookies, rolls, etc. When we stepped in Panaderia, it was all that and then some. They had the display cases full of stuff but they also had these metal rack holders with racks of baked goods on them. Whether there were for public purchase or they there using the main part of the building as a cooling off area, I don't know. But the smells were overwhelming, in a good way. The place smelled heavenly, even if I wasn't sure what I was smelling. We moved over to the display cases and started to pick out a few things. Some of the things were easy to figure out while a few of the things required us to ask the cashier what they were. He was more than willing to help us pick out our snacks. We all picked out a handful of goodies and headed out. I didn't realize until after we left that they sold pizza as well. That seems odd at first but if you think about it, it does make some sense. Do you not bake a pizza? Don't bakeries bake things? Just put 2 and 2 together and you have a winning combo. As we walked to the car, we snacked on the goodies. I tried to stick to the safe stuff that I knew I would like but I did get a few unknown things as well. It turned out, even the safe bet food took me by surprise. A chocolate chip cookie is a chocolate chip cookie but you add cooking methods used by different ethnic groups and you can find some nuances in how the final cookie tastes. Panaderia is just that. Offering you things that you are familiar or unfamiliar with but adding a bit of Mexican-style of baking to it. My treats were delicious and I have been wanting to go back to get more and to try their pizza out.

Review Visit: October 21st, 2014…read more So much food. So many memories. El Mexicano is one of those places that was located in a weird spot. It was on the corner of a street away from a commercial district but not quite in a residential area. Tim, Matt, and I pulled up for an early dinner one evening and were greeted by some friendly workers. We placed our orders at the counter and took a seat at one of the few empty tables. There were a few others in the restaurant but due to the sheer small size, it felt packed with just the few of us in there. As with a lot of Mexican places, we had our food out in front of us before we even had time to really dig in to a random topic. Not only was it cooked exceptionally fast but the sheer amount of food was borderline nonsense for the price we paid. You gotta start somewhere, so I started by eating the extra goodies that came with my burrito. It was a combination of rice, refried beans (?) and some salad stuff topped with sour cream, I think. Scarfing down the sides was easy as the food was pretty good aside from the bean paste stuff. That was a bit dry. After priming my stomach for the main course by downing the side stuff, I used my fork and knife to cut in to the burrito. As is the norm at these places, the burritos are massive. Like, this is half the size of a loaf of bread. It's gut-busting sized. But, I was able to use my knife and fork to shovel down most of the burrito. I had to tap out at about 1/4 left as I just couldn't do it. The food was just too much. I think my meal was under $10 so to get full for that much is an incredible value in my book. The burrito was on par with the side stuff. It was good, if not borderline great. El Mexicano would've definitely been a place I would revisit if they were still open. It didn't help that we put down a ton of chips and salsa in between bites as well. I love chips and salsa. Matt was in the same boat as me. Unable to finish. Tim was the victor and put down all his stuff and then some more of the chips and salsa. The man is a beast when he wants to be. So, it was a sad day when I was doing some searching around on Google and discovered El Mexicano had closed. Here is a link to an article the local newspaper did on it closing, if you are interested. I was surprised to see it had been in the area for 16 years. At that point, it becomes a staple to the area.
