Usually I'm so stressed out when going to any government facility. But their security guard and staff are SO INFORMATIVE! I appreciate the fact they are there to HELP us and not make customers feel incompetent when they don't know which documents they need or need to file a claim. The security guard was very helpful with telling me what hours are the slowest if I needed to come back again. Went there to do a name change and get a SSN for my child. The security guard said to leave the documents in a yellow envelope with them cause they are only letting people in by appointments. And I can call to come pick up my documents in 3-5 business days. And to let them know I need my childs SSN for tax purposes and they will give me it. So I call 3 days later and to find out they already sent my documents by mail and I can't get my childs SSN until I get the social security card in the mail. So I end up leaving my child's brand new crisp birth certificate, my brand new crisp marriage license and my ID with all the forms to do a name change and to get my childs SSN in a yellow envelope. I just got my documents back and they send it in a medium envelope FOLDED IN HALF!!!!!!!! This is very unprofessional of them to not know how the process works and give me misleading information and to fold my important brand new crisp documents. They should have given me my documents back exactly how I gave it to them! And to schedule an appointment with them your waiting almost a month for them to have little to NO customers there. THERE PARKING LOT WAS ALMOST EMPTY BESIDES EMPLOYEES AND EVERY PERSON THAT THEY TURNED DOWN TO LET IN! I went to the SS office to make a name change this morning. I showed up about 10 minutes after 8AM and there was already a line of about 10 or so people...not too bad. Parking lot has plenty of open spots. They opened about 10 minutes early at 8:50AM so show up early!!Parking lot was full by 8:30AM. I was helped by a nice lady who checked me in and got me a number. This location seems to be pretty efficient, however, it's not like anyone actually enjoys coming here. I've been to the San Marcos location and it's way less organized than this one and the employees are nicer here. The parking lot is small and fills quickly so come early if you can! read more

Went to the SSA office today at approx. 10AM for a correction to my card. Upon entry the guard was quick and professional as he sent me to sign in. Within 10 minutes I was at the window. The gentleman there clearly knew his job and what needed to be done. He completed the change efficiently and politely. Mission accomplished, I was out the door in about 20 minutes. Came in 45 min before closing. About 12 people there. Parking is limited to about 23 spaces. You walk in and check yourself at the machine and get your ticket til they call you. It was fast. In and out about 1/2 hour. Forgot her name but she was very patient and helpful because my mom had birth certificate from 1950's and the documents were very fragile it started to fall apart and we were afraid that they weren't going to accept them because she was born from a U.S. Territory island and they do things differently there. But everything worked out. So big props to the Social Security office. Now we wait 2 weeks for grandma card. read more

I had my second very efficient and polite experience with this office a few days ago. Social security Had made a mistake with my withholding for Medicare. I anticipated a nightmare unraveling the problem. I called the office. The phone was answered promptly. I was able to make an appointment very soon to see someone. On that morning we were taken in before 9 o'clock, helped through the kiosk, saw staff and were out the door in about 30 minutes Ferdinand, who counseled us, did an excellent job. I had a good experience here today. I found a parking place within 2 minutes. Walked in the building and asked the guard at the desk what the procedure is. He was brief in his answer, but courteous. First time here parking really bad so I heard some people comes in groups in the morning and it's better in the afternoon but it varies. Security friendly and supportive with checkin in and calling out numbers and directing people if you have questions. The wait varies depending what your there to do. Mine was just administration questions and in total 20 mins. They do have like 15 reps working so be patient and least the room is cool with a/c. read more

yesterday morning i woke up with the long standing belief that civil service was a workfare program for people that can't muster the basic skills to work in either the fast food or housekeeping industries. but i rolled out of bed anyway and spent much of the day trying to straighten out my mom's MEDICARE on the phone. finally somebody at MEDICARE told me i needed to go to the local SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION office. today i spent three and a half hours waiting for my name to be called only to find out (after about thirty seconds) that apparently i had to call MEDICARE 'cause there's nothing the SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION can do to help. yeah, i know the letter i got from MEDICARE has contact info for the local SOCIAL SECURITY office on the paperwork they sent me but ... everything in my experience over the last two days suggests that i may have over valued those fine folks in civil service. read more

I had a great experience here. I made an appointment to help my mom collect SS Retirement. We arrived a few minutes early, checked in, and they called us in by name right on time. We were helped by a very nice latina-looking young lady with glasses and wavy hair (if you're reading this I'm sorry I didn't remember your name!), who got my mom all squared away even without her CA ID card (we're still waiting for her new senior ID card to arrive), set up her direct deposits, explained all the caveats and terms associated with her SS benefits, and generally made everything very quick and simple. It seems rare to walk out of a government building thinking, "Well, that was easy" after getting everything you were hoping for, but that's what happened and I thought they should be commended. I went on a Thursday morning and was in and out with my name change in 15 minutes. The security guard is very friendly and helpful and the workers are efficient and professional. I couldn't believe it! I went in for a name change and I had planned to be there until noon with all the stories I had heard! Not the case. I arrived at 9:20 got a front row parking spot, checked-in on the kiosk and waited 5 minutes and my number was called. There were about 50 people waiting before me so I'm not sure what they needed, but there were 7 windows so I think they had the personnel to handle the load. read more

This is my first time to a social security office. I went to apply in person as two hack attacks on line in my account required them to take it off line. I called and waited on phone line for an appointment. You can do the dial back option so you don't have to stay on the line. However, the guy in Chicago who called back told me Oceanside had no appointments as they were booked out 60 days. I could go in and wait 45-60 minutes instead. He put me on hold to see if I could get one at a different office (you have to give the other office's zip code) and I had to hang up due to the wait. I drove to O'side office the next morning, arriving at 9:15 am, they open at 9. The very small parking lot was completely filled and a line was 16 people out the door. I parked in violation of "no parking for soc sec office" signs next door and risked a tow. I overheard security guard tell someone you should get there by 8:30 am to get a parking spot. Once inside they give you a number for service. After an over two hour wait my number was finally called. From there on it was smooth sailing. The woman was very nice and very knowledgeable. She was great. In at 9:15, out at 12:35 pm. My day with the government. read more

I put in a form, last August, so my son could still get his Social Security Disability Benefits. He turned eighteen in April and each school year you have to send in the form so he can collect until he graduates from high school. In stead of sending it in, I brought it into the Oceanside Office to expedite the process. The joke is on me. Someone in their Office screwed up the paperwork, where it shows I brought it in, but they can't find it. I have called several times and all I get is, "You have to wait another 30 days because it is in processing." Except "Processing" can't find it. These people are worst than the Post Office or the DMV as far as doing their job correctly, or having pride in their work. Do they care that my son goes without his benefits, something which would help ease the burden of taking care of him? No they don't! read more

This place is very organized and orderly. It's a whole lot different than other social security offices I have been to. There was an employee working the check in system and a guard lining people up. I got there on a Wednesday 10 min before they opened and stood in line. I recommend this, because the parking lot is very small. Once I got in, I was out in less than 15 min. I got married and needed my name changed and a new card. They have a really efficient set up. Social Security cards are taken care of very quickly. If you're there for something else, I can see why you might have a longer wait. As far as the security guard... He definitely is "all business", and I found him quite funny, actually! A month ago, I had a great experience at the SSA office. I arrived 15 minutes before they opened and was greeted by the nice security guy who asked what I was in for and got a number...i just got married and needed to change my name because it is the name I use in my business..etc. My number was called by 9:08am and the exchange of words and and signing took 5 minutes. We were in and out of the building within half an hour with our business completed. This included getting two replacement social security cards and one statement of Medicare benefits.
