Okay, lets get started. So, I was selected to do my civic duty of Jury Duty this past week at Dedham District Court. Yay!! Not really. Anyways it was the day after the major snowstorm and I called the night before to make sure that I was still on for Jury Duty, which of course I was. I got there at 8am, parked in the rear of the building going through the exit (which I didn't know at the time because it was covered in snow). When I got inside the place was packed with people. The Court Officers were very pleasant and nice. We watched a video on Jury Duty and than the Judge came in and welcomed and thanked us for being there. She informed us that her case would not be heard today and that the majority of people would go home. I didn't get to, instead the remanding people went over to the district courthouse. Went into two cases and wasn't selected for either, and then we were released from our duties. Pros: Super friendly staff and Court officers. WiFi in the Registry of Deeds building. Paid day off (for me at least). Cons: Paying for parking. No WiFi once inside the District Courthouse. Not much fun.

The cops were nowhere near as buff as their sloshed challengers (that means drunk), but the element of alcohol probably tipped things in the cops' favour, as did strength in numbers. Anyway, it was comical and brutal and scary all at the same time. The same men had been racially abusive inside the Chinese restaurant where I was eating at 3am (Double Chin), and hadn't paid their bill. They'd wanted to lay a beatdown on the employees, but the cops had been nearby thankfully. Four stars for responding so well, minus one for so many crappy, illegal parking tickets given out.

Otherwise, you will tirelessly drive around in circles searching for an illegal parking spot and may risk your car getting ticketed or towed. Aside from the parking situation, the office opens promptly at 8:30am and I quickly spoke with the clerk and was out by 8:38am. The security staff and clerk were both respectful, kind, and helpful. Customer service was five stars, the difficulty in finding a parking spot/finding a garage is the reason for the lower rating!

David Sedaris, Santaland Diaries I was just listening to a colleague kvetch about a 7th-circle-of-hell-ish visit to the Providence/Westminster St. Social Security office, so I was compelled to write this review. The first step to changing your name (in my case, marriage) is to first change with Social Security, in person. When I discovered that you can go to any office in the state, I decided to give Pawtucket a try just after they opened at 9, fearing the worst and clearing my calendar of obligations for the morning. It looks like I imagine the Social Security Office where Carol, Marcia, Jan and Cindy might have walked into when they changed their name to Brady. There was only one person in front of me, and then I sashayed up with my documents, slid them under the glass, and DONE in 10 minutes.

But the woman behind the desk was very rude with me, considering that in my case, the error was made by social security and not by me. She also told me the wrong piece of paperwork to provide and when I went back with exactly what she said to get, I still didn't have what I needed, and she didn't seem to care. She said, "I could help you, if you had all the paperwork you were supposed to have." All attitude. Bottom line--the facility itself and wait to be seen were reasonable, she was NOT. Woonsocket SSA is much better--go there if you have a choice! They were helpful and friendly!
