Every year I have to go down to city hall to get my pup re-licensed. No big deal, especially…read morebecause no matter how busy I've seen the offices, I've always been in and out of there quickly- like within 10 minutes at the MOST! And the staff have been friendly and helpful every time. I've also had to go in person to take care of a ticket, and the woman at that particular desk was kind and helpful, too. My only complaint was that the ticket said to go to one location, but when I got there, I was redirected back to where I had started off. No big deal, just a bit annoying. Even on the phone, the city staff are helpful and kind. In one instance, I had forgotten to pay something (can't remember what now), but the woman on the phone very kindly helped me get the information I needed, and made sure I knew I had to call her back with the payment confirmation by a certain time (well before closing) to make sure I wouldn't be penalized. I was so grateful for the heads up! There's a ton of info on the city website, but if you have to go down in person, it's not an unpleasant experience. :-)

The armory down the street stands out a lot more than the lil house that HPLovecraft wrote about. Still it's a great side trip that will only take seconds out of your day if you are in or around the colleges in the area. This is obviously a residence and they have since named the house after someone but you can see the wall that used to be used as the front of the house and the descriptions stand strong in Lovecraft's writing. No big deal but I liked being there and seeing it.

Originally a farm or semi-farm building, it followed the average New England colonial lines of the middle eighteenth century--the prosperous peaked-roof sort, with two stories and dormerless attic, and with the Georgian doorway and interior panelling dictated by the progress of taste at that time. I went in and you get scanned as well as your purse or bag. You then need to provide your driver's license, so they can generate a visitor's pass. After that I headed to the Tax office, where I got a number. Within a few minutes a nice guy came and helped me with my request. He was patient, professional and explained every detail very clearly. A nice experience.

I just know that each time I enter the building I hold my breath and touch those amazing ornate doors that are just background to the hallway where students eat cafeteria food. As one would guess, this library is amazingly curated. I am a huge Maurice Sendak fan and I found copies of works by him that I didn't know existed. Like the first translated version of a famous Czechoslovakian fairy tale that he illustrated. I always grab a comic too. They have two sections, one for typically sized comics and one for over sized comic books. Also, the student work they showcase is always interesting. As a bibliophile I feel genuinely lucky to have this library in my home state. And I'll totally marry someone who has tenure there so I can sneakily read their books till they die.

The staff is nice and efficient. The main thing that I wish they had is dedicated parking. Parking in this area is tough and hard to find. Like many post offices, you can get supplies for shipping packages. The only thing to know is that if you use their Express Package supplies, you will have to pay the express package rate, which is usually $4-5 more than if you would had wrapped your box in a brown generic paper or plain box.
