Drove 30 minutes to the Social Security office on Friday after Christmas based on posted online hours showing the office open at 9:00 a.m. There were multiple cars in the parking lot, and one by one people discovered a paper notice taped to the door stating the office was closed. In 2025, relying on a handwritten sign instead of updating official online hours is unacceptable. Multiple members of the public wasted time because accurate information was not posted where the public is directed to look. I will return next week. I recently submitted an application for a new card, since I was changing my name. I later discovered that my new card was sent to an invalid address, because one of the representatives transposed the numbers in my address when processing the application. I understand human errors occur, but that should have NEVER happened, especially since the representative had the correct information on the application. I called the office to inquire about next steps and was immediately met with an attitude. I should've been the one with an attitude, because it was the offices SCREW UP and not mine. This office provides 3 different types of services. Replacements/ income verification/ Issuing a brand new card(for names changes or newborns). Bring your passport and completed application. Replacements are free. Your immediate welcoming party of two officers will ask you to remove your watch and all contents of your pocket into a plastic bin. Escort you through the metal detector and wave their wand over you for the entire office to watch as there are no display monitors that show your ticket number/service window. You will step immediately to the left after your pat down to the kiosk and choose one of the three options, enter your or kins social security number and receive your printout ticket number. Everyone seems to continuously crowd the far left waiting room so turn back around and wait in the right room for some extra personal space. I've read reviews about how it can get a bit noisy and distracting with chatter around you so I brought earbuds. I also recommend a book or a magazine of your own. I didn't have the volume too high and I sat right under the speaker to hear my number be called. When I sat down at 9:50am I was already 5th in line for a replacement but i still had to wait an hour as the gentlemen handling replacements took a mini break of 15-20 minutes. My number was finally called and having my PASSPORT really sped things up. I sat for a minute with the agent and provided my printed and complete application. He gave me a letter as a receipt and told me my card will be MAILED to me. This is a new regulation as of August 2014. Bummer. You can have the card mailed to your local address. No proof of address needed. Would I recommend this location? I don't think there are any other options. Definitely bring reading materials and/or earbuds. read more

I've been married 9 months, and I am just now getting around to changing my name. I have been dreading going to the social security office, but it wasn't nearly as painful as I thought it would be. I arrived at 2:15, and I walked out right at closing, 3:00. When you go in, you have to go through a metal detector, and you can't bring in any food or drinks. The wait wasn't long though so that wasn't an issue for me. You then go to one of two kiosks and check in. You take the printed ticket and wait for your number to be called. The agent who helped me was polite and funny throughout the whole process until the very end when he completely changed. He asked me to verify my address was correct on my receipt. I said, "Oh, sorry, I actually filled the form out a few weeks ago, and I just moved. I forgot to change my address on the form." He got really angry and told me that I had signed the form under penalty of perjury. Whoa.... Chill out, dude. It was an honest mistake. Make sure that you not only have the necessary documents when you go, but also make sure all the information on them is up to date! read more

So this is surprising. A four-star review for a government agency. I think if you start with the DMV for your benchmark, though, there's really no where to go but up. I ventured to the SSA to change my name on my card after getting married. First off, a couple of annoying things: 1. They are only open from 9-3 for visitors. 2. You have to go through a metal detector. (WTF? Is it the airport?) 3. No food or drinks are allowed, so they actually made me put my coffee back in the car. If I'm annoyed, you ask, why did I give them four stars? Mainly because I didn't have to wait nearly as long as I'd anticipated. (And I didn't see any neck tattoos). The office was clean, the system was organized, and the woman who helped with my claim was very nice and efficient. You simply get a ticket when you walk in and identify your problem, and then you wait until your number is called to go to the proper window to get your problem taken care of. Tip for name-changers-print off the form at home and fill it out before you go in. Seems like you can also make an appointment online for more expedient service, so I'd definitely look in to that to see if it's a possibility for your claim. read more

I mean, food I can understand, but what's harmful about bringing a bottle of water or a cup of coffee? Nevertheless, the office was super clean, the officers are helpful and super friendly, good parking and there is a bus stop nearby so it was convenient and easy to come to this SSA. read more

As far as SSA's go, my experience wasn't as bad as I was expecting! Imagine you walk through a door. As you open the door you notice the entire room is in the shape of a "V". The room is very bright, almost to the point that your eyes sting. The walls are white and lined with windows. Above each window there is a LETTER. How do you gain appointment with said officer behind the window? Well you proceed forward to the touch screen. So you are standing in front of the touch screen when you notice the chairs on either side of the "V" pointing towards the door. Someone coughs. People occupy those spaces but no one talks. A screen flashes "F367" and a person from the left proceeds to the instructed window. And you never see them again. A baby cries. You declare your business to the touch screen machine while all eyes are watching you. A slip of paper appears. You are divided based on purpose to either arm of the "V" and blankly stare ahead until your number is called. Sounds like science fiction, right? Well, in reality I was in and out in about 30 minutes to apply for a replacement SS card. Make sure you find whatever forms you need ahead of time. Also, get there early before 9 a.m. just so that you can be sure to be ahead of the crowd and so the SS workers are still fresh. read more

Going to any government administration office is never fun, but I had an excellent experience at this SSA location. I was a little nervous when i showed up 15 minutes before it opened and there was already a line about 30 people deep. But the security guard to open the door a little early and begin the process of checking people in. I was in an out within 25 minutes when all was said and done. Right now my impression is not good. It almost seems like a prison. No wireless internet, no TV, the bathroom smelled of urine and needed attention. I called for an appt for some advice but first available was March 24th. I had filed online but thus far no one can advise me of options thus I came to the office to wait to be seen. Lots of toddlers here and no play area like the airports have to keep them occupied. They are crawling on the floor which honestly is a haven for illnesses. Got there at 1:10 pm and waited until 2:30 only to be called to be ask what I needed and then waited again to be called at 3:15 or so to finally speak to someone. The counselor was very helpful for me but there has to be a more efficient way of utilizing these resources. Isnt is a basic facility to know the status of your ticket?? You take the ticket when you enter and if you stepped out for a restroom break you cannot be sure if your ticket was called or not. Moreover there is no way to find out how many people are ahead of you. The tickets don't run in sequence. Else the office staff are good. read more

My experience at this Social Security Office was totally different from what I am reading. There is one category, other business0 that takes much longer than the simple get a replacement card etc. I arrived early morning and received my number as described in the other posts. I did not get called to a window until after sitting there for 3 and 1/2 hours. The lady in the window was rude and question things about my situation that she had no right to ask. She then told me that I couldn't be seen that day and I would have to come back the next day and get there and hour and 30 minutes before opening to stand in line. The next day I went to the office in Rivergate. Was called to the window in 30 minutes and called back to an office in a hour and was out in 2 hours. My husband and I went to apply for Medicare benefits. The process was easy, and the woman who helped us polite and competent. But - when we tried to enter the building, the guards were taking food and drinks from everyone. My husband, who lost his salivary glands due to cancer treatments, must carry water everywhere to keep his mouth moistened. He has no problem with this in the federal courthouses where he practices law, nor even normally with TSA at airports. These guards, however, were insistent and rude. They said they did not care whether the ADA [a federal law] permitted him to carry water, and they refused to contact a supervisor. They needlessly embarrassed my husband and caused a delay to those trying to enter the building. Security guards are undertrained and underpaid, I'm sure, but they need to be given at least some basic training in federal law for people with disabilities and in politeness in working with the public. One of them was particularly rude and seemed to get quite a thrill from throwing his weight around. When we were leaving, he seemed to be amusing himself taking food and drink from a young mother and two children. read more
