Not going to lie, visiting one's Social Security office can be a bit of a hair raising experience. Lots of people, security at the door, tense, confusing, paperwork ridden, exhausting. It is what it is. Toshima at the front when I first walk in made my two visits to the SS here on Buffalo a 4-star experience. Having to go twice on behalf of a family member and sorting out their mountainous pile of medical paperwork to properly file SSDI for them, I am already overwhelmed before I even walk thru the door. But when I do, Toshima is at the first window kind of hollering at folks walking in and asking "do you have an appointment?" He is a super nice guy, you can just tell, despite him hollering at you thru the plastic partition from behind his desk. He is quick to help and offer advice without attitude or tone. Clearly there is a lot of reason for an employee at an SS office to be short tempered or at the end of their rope, but Toshima is real, measured, human. In the sea of confusion surrounding all that I was addressing, Toshima was clearly knowledgeable, experienced, trying to move my process along and doing what he can to make sure I have everything in order that they requested, thus why I was there to begin with. He interacted with me in a way that made the SS office seem "human" if that makes sense. He does not want you to waste your time or their time. He might be a unicorn in the whole experience, but again, he is worthy of making my experience a 4-star event. So yeah, my first Yelp review of a Social Security office and hopefully my last, but Toshima warrants a shout out in exceeding my expectations that were super low prior to walking in. read more

A third one-star rating with nothing good to say! The best I have to say is DEFUND THEM due to gross incompetence, very poor customer service, in my experiences with them. The Bottom Line Upfront (BLUF) is that this office consistently demonstrates significant incompetence and urgently needs to overhaul its customer service, particularly in communications and process improvement. More specifically; 1. They don't answer the phone and it's a frustrating joke to try and call them. 2. They don't return phone calls either except once in my experience of calling them more times than I counted - on the order of 50 times. 3. They make demands while holding your money hostage in their letters of what you "Must Do" to get your own money! 4. There is zero-point zero customer service - just an attitude of what you "must do" to meet their process/requirements to get the money they have collected from you for 48 years. 5. Everything is your fault for not being an expert at their process. The latest insult is demanding what I must do by April 25th, 2026, in returning their forms SSA 827 and SSA 8240. See attached pictures of SSA instructions of what I "Must Do" dated March 25, 2026. These forms were completed on April 5th (see attached pictures with my SSN redacted (glad I kept copies-knowing this would happen with this office. These forms were mailed back on April 6th from the main post office off Sunset to expediate delivery. Then 8 days later I get a notice saying they did not receive my forms! Then they sent the same notice to lawyer's office. Then my lawyer's office sent me a notice that I need to submit the forms - LOL!!! So, I am submitting the forms here for the public to see I submitted on time. And of course, I submitted to my attorney's office before the deadline. Will the SSA step into their power and admit they did not check their mail or inboxes, or is it the post office's failure to deliver the mail or my fault for paying into a grossly incompetent system for 48 years? IMO, the SSA is just a government insurance fraud/ government jobs program cloaked as a human services support system. So, what now SSA? Who is at fault here and how does this get owned? Perhaps, I "Must do" something per all your letters. Sincerely, my hope, rather my great hope, is that your office greatly improve. For the future generations - I would recommend you never pay one penny into this SSA Government jobs program and their buildings. The SSA is a fine example of another Government program that tell the people funding them what the rules are and then dictate what you pay and how much you get, when you get it and what you "must do" to get it (that statement is in their every letter and sometimes multiple times), and what your bennies are! Let the people invest their own money, their way- let them own their money and invest same. DEFUND THE SSA. In a word, my experience with the SSA has been an "aweful". read more

I'm writing to express my frustration with a recent experience I had while calling to get an update on my claim. I was on hold for approximately 40 minutes, which I completely understand--call volumes can be high, and I'm patient with that. However, when my call was finally answered, I was met with a dismissive and unprofessional attitude. The representative I spoke with, a male agent, interrupted me mid-sentence to ask if I had sent in the original documents. I confirmed that I had, to which he abruptly responded, "Okay. Thank you!" and then disconnected the call without giving me the opportunity to ask any further questions or receive the information I needed. Waiting that long only to be cut off and dismissed felt incredibly disrespectful. I expect a basic level of courtesy and professionalism when reaching out for assistance--especially regarding something as important as my claim. I went to go get a earnings statement(certified) for my work history report and I get there early and some dude comes out saying "the only services we provide without an appointment are etc...." Nothing about providing other services which clearly he did not establish that at all. If you work or whoever came up with these services clearly doesn't do their job to the fullest. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and waiting almost 2 hours went by pretty quick. It did, however, took me a minute before I figured out how our numbers popped up on the screen before they called out the numbers on their speaker. Keep in mind that omce they call the number on the speaker, you'll have to be quick before they skip you and call the next number. I had pre-filled my name change application at home so it was already in their system. That made my process go by faster. The lady who helped me, verified my information and sent me on my way. The staff goes out of their way to be as unhelpful and dismissive as possible. I applied 6 months ago, called every week, uploaded all my documents and no one would process my application. There is something wrong with their online portal for uploading documents. I'm disabled and I'm struggling, I really needed help. I'm about to lose my apartment. I'm dying out here. Be prepared to spend a whole day! As soon as you arrive there's a QR code to check in. It's placed right out front before the doors. The line is for people who need to check in. Once checked in; you can enter the building and find a seat until your number is called. NUMBERS ARE CALLED NOT IN ORDER! you can't eat and drink inside the administration but water is ok. I suggest; NOT to bring your kids. They will be bored and you will end up running after them. Bring a book and maybe a battery pack. FYI: I checked in at 10:30am and was not called until 3:15pm! I called their office twice trying to get status on our client. The rep who answered the phone sat it down on their desk and would not help me. Very sorry state of affairs in this office. If you're not a fan of bureaucracy (and who is?), you might have a rough time here. The website is only so helpful and they do not take appointments. Definitely check online first, as some tasks can be done entirely virtually and others can be started ahead of time online. During Covid, my house got broken into and I thought my SSC was stolen. Trying to replace it via mail (sending original documents as required) was super stressful and ultimately unsuccessful - thankfully they returned my documents but with a useless note saying that I didn't have all the required materials (but never disclosed what was missing). This time, I had to go in person to change my name. I got married over a year ago but kept putting this off in large part due to knowing it was a hassle. Doing the paperwork online ahead of time helps but you still ultimately have to go to the office in person with your ID and marriage certificate - and even if you go at or before opening, the line will wrap around the building. That being said, the sign we were at estimated the wait time at 4 hours but it only ended up taking about 90 minutes. But go patient, maybe with a book. TIP: Go alone, or only "invite" someone needed for the task (ie to translate). The line looked SO much longer and the waiting room was overly full due to several entire families or groups of 5 friends all going for seemingly ONE person to get something done. I was told by the California social security office that I have an appointment today, and for some reason they have a miscommunication and in the system the appointment is a different date. The lady at the window absolutely did not care about customers and she was talking to her family member on the phone. When she saw us she hides her phone with a piece of paper and refused to take the remaining document. At the end her supervisor came and threatened to call the security guard and escort us. So disappointed this is how government officials treated taxpayers, I've came to this office before and this is the first time I had such a bad experience. read more

Trying to get an appointment is nearly impossible. Phoning in is a minimum of a two hour wait with terrible crackling elevator music with a robot voice that makes you think you finally got to a human . The staff answers the call after your 2 plus hour listening to crackling tones and the agent gives a 5 syllable name and expects you to either remember it or write it down and gets obnoxious if you ask them to repeat it. Thé live human and had the opportunity to talk to ... tried several times to answer a question before the whole question was out. So I would get wrong answers and I was afraid they would hang up before getting him/her to understand my question. They needed information from me which is totally fine- they sent a self addressed envelope so I wrote out the answers to the questions and mailed back in THEIR mailing envelope I put two stamps on it and then they never received it... TWICE!!! Finally I was able to read the address that was on the envelope THEY sent me and the human told me I sent my papers to the WRONG ADDRESS TWICE! How am I supposed to know this? Their letter said to just show up at their location or call .. they had two phone numbers and three locations. Maryland, California and Nevada ... obviously I would go to my local address but they had a live around the building two hours before opening and it's July with triple digit weather. No place to sit down or get water. Impossible to make an appointment for a simple question and their website doesn't allow you to sent an attachment of filled in paperwork. All they needed was one page emailed or attached to a web based questionnaire. They do not allow attachments and give me three addresses in three different states and no way to make an appointment on line and when I did ask how to make an appointment or where to send a page of information I got an email saying my case was closed. What? My original case was closed or the no answer response to my question on how to make an appointment. This is the most confusing thing to deal with ever! I guess they expect people to stand in line for gosh knows how long around the building when it's in the 90°'s at 7 AM in Vegas. Thé agents do not listen and they have zero way for a human to try to communicate with them. Asking a question through the website on how to make an appointment and the response was my case was closed was confusing . They didn't have my social security number and four to five other people have my same legal name. How did they know my case was closed? Thankfully I called one hour before they were supposed to take phone calls and got a recording that my wait time would be three hours and 45 minutes. I stayed on the phone hoping my cellular would not die before I got help. Fortunately others must have given up I was given the opportunity to be treated like the bad guy after two hours and 12 minutes and I just prayed that the human who I could barely understand with the 5-6 syllable name would not hang up on me... The human truly chastised me for sending my one page one check mark answer to the wrong address that THEY SENT TO ME!!! With their pre printed envelope. If I didn't have brain damage before this horrible encounter , I certainly did afterwards. Holy cow. Never ever get a name change .... Never ever believe they are giving you the correct address or phone number and make sure you take a whole day off to get your question answered for their mistake. This mistake could have cost me a lot of money so I had to get an answer plus when they send a letter saying they never received my mail ( twice) but threatened me with a hearty financial fine .. it's not going to get a good review. Avoid SSA at all costs ! They don't hire folks that actually HAVE A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER AND THEIR FIRST LANGUAGE DEFINITELY IS NOT ENGLISH. Holy crap ... I got here at 0740am & stood in line for nothing. Would rate 3.5 stars bc I waited in line for an hour & a half when I could've showed up at 0830. Tips: 1. Just show up when the security guards post the QR codes to check in on your phone at 0830am (make sure your location services are on or it won't let you check in, below is a how to if you need help) 2. Have your application ready & signed (highly recommend to print at home and bring it completed). 3. Have all documents ready (US passport is always safest option + additional documents if needed) 4. If here for MULTIPLE people, every single person much check in with the QR code. Make sure your location services are on for your internet app (mine was Safari for iPhone) or it won't let you check in. 1st place to check: go to settings & scroll down, click on Safari & scroll down click on location, click allow 2nd place to check: privacy & security, location services, Safari Websites, click 'Allow while using app' Both must be on. After checking in, building opened at 9am & I was put in another line to get in. Seated for about 10 mins and a clerk who was guiding customers asked around who was here for a social security card (I was here for a name change). She took my application & documents, went in the back to get it processed. She came back in 5 mins with my documents and receipt & I was good to go! read more

Our experience went better than expected. Got there at 11:45 am , our appointment was at 12:30 pm. Checked in at the kiosk . Barely even had time to sit down when our number showed up on the tv screen. We almost didn't see our number at the bottom of the screen. Got done very quickly . But would still have to wait for the replacement card to be mailed in 2 weeks. Overall, the whole experience today went smoothly. And there were plenty of parking spaces. Here are some tips before you go there: 1. Try to make an appointment online instead of just walking in. Don't bother calling to make an appointment,you would be on hold for 2 hours or more. 2. After checking in ( from kiosk ), sit down close to the tv . Make sure to keep checking for your number . They can come up right away, you might not even notice yet. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! I tried calling the 800 number to book an appointment and the automated recording said to call back again later. I decided to go in person and walk in instead. They make everyone wait outside in the melting heat when there is plenty of seating inside After waiting patiently for 1.5hr with my 3 children, I go to the window to apply for a new social security card for my son. My 2 year old was born in Canada and has dual citizenship. I provide both his American & Canadian passports which show proof of citizenship, age and place of birth. The clerk refused to accept 2 passports as a form of documentation and insisted I needed a birth certificate. A passport is always a superior form of identification. You need to show a birth certificate to even get a passport. Not only did I have his US passport but I also had his Canadian passport. They still refused to accept 2 passports as ID / documentation I asked to speak to a supervisor, while I showed her the government website which clearly states.. " You must present your child's foreign birth certificate if you have it or can get it within 10 days. If not, we will consider other documents such as your child's passport " https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm She even printed it for me so I asked her to read the 2nd sentence that says " we will consider your child's passport ", she refused to read it, asked me to leave and slammed the sliding door on my face. I asked the security officer for the names of the clerk and supervisor and he refused and told me to leave with my 3 children. I asked him politely if I could speak to someone else and he said I needed to leave now since I already spoke to the supervisor I tried to tell him that the workers are not adhering to the government website and he didn't care. I am beyond livid. I'm not one to write bad reviews but these workers especially the supervisor should not be working with people. I had the necessary documentation per the government website and they refused to provide service. All I needed was a SS card. It shouldn't be this complicated. This is unacceptable. These workers are paid for by our tax dollars. They are supposed to work for the people. Horrible! Horrible! Experience! Never again! read more

Husband had to change one letter in the first name to match all other documents. He used walk-in. He recommended to get there 15 min before opening, quickly register with QR code and wait for number to be called. It took him two visits to get the system properly. The actual appointment was very efficient, polite and up to the point. He completed everything he intended. I was very impressed with SSA website - found everything in well written form with clear categories. Overall, expected horror stories and received rather good service. Thank you. Do yourself a favor and check on line first if what you need done can be started online, or maybe done entirely online. If you do need to go in, check in via the QR code. Don't be a dummy like me and stand in line outside in the hot sun! Once you get a check in number you can head inside, in the AC. You may not be able to find seats in the main room but around the corner there is another section of seats and windows. I forgot a piece of paperwork, but the guy working gave me a line pass which essentially let me skip the line if I came back the SAME DAY and go directly to his window. This saves lots of time. However, I "only" waited one hour before my number was called. Note that numbers are not called in order, and some people will be there for hours, and some minutes. If you don't have a phone that can read QR codes then you will most likely be there for a long time. The regular check in line (no QR code people) had to wait extra long. read more

Try a little kindness and patience. I know as I waited on the phone for the "next available" person who was getting close to the end of a work day & may have had to go home and prepare meals for the family, maybe even trying to give help to all the SSA recipients who were either in the office or on the phone. I was treated with respect and dignity by the "agent" who offered to help me with my problem. Remember, when you go to the doctor, he is "practicing medicine" and we wait as "patient" as we can be....That's what we are to be - patient with one another for we do not know what others may be dealing with from day to day. Patience is a virtue to be desired by all....IN OTHER WORDS - the Service today was GREAT! Thank You! read more

One of the security guards watches for new customers in line, as they had one line for changes to ones social security and another shorter line inside to sign-up for paperwork and Medicare insurance I was sent to the latter. I arrived at 2:12 and was called on by 3:35 to the window of Gary at window #5. He was very pleasant and took care of my process quickly. It wasn't a bad wait inside. It was chilly, so one might wish to take a sweater. My only issue was with knowing where to park, as the Social Security office shares parking with Las Vegas Skin and Cancer Clinic. read more

Probably my worst experience ever with a group of people. Made an appointment and came in here to get help for my benefits. I get my number called up after 1 hour and a woman asks for my ID, she then proceeds to write another number on a sticky note and asks me to take a seat again and wait for this number to get called up again. After waiting for another 2 1/2 hours, I finally get called up again. I walk up to the lady and explain my situation to which she immediately says, "I can't help you with that." I ask her if she can direct me to the correct place where I can get help for my SS benefits and she gets up and sarcastically tells me "I know the person who can help you." Then comes another woman, I'm assuming her supervisor, who immediately tells me she can't help me with my questions while raising her voice with attitude. I tell her I understand but I would like some direction on where to go if the Social Security Administration can't help me and she proceeds to yank my papers out of my hand and starts accusing me of lying about my social security benefits. She talks over me every time I try to respond and continues to avoid my questions by repeating that I'm lying and that no one there can help me. I'm baffled by the fact that I was treated so rudely when I went in asking for help, at no point in the interaction was I rude or disrespectful but the staff were defensive and refused to do their job. Not to mention the fact that my wife went in last week for the exact same reason and they helped her. When I told them this, they proceeded to say, "that it must have been a mistake because they don't deal with those issues here." Which only tells me that they CAN help, they just don't WANT to. The security guard at the front even began to get up and walk over as if I was the one causing a scene when the woman and her supervisor on the other side were yelling and smiling at me because I started tearing up out of frustration. It's difficult when you're looking for help from the only place that can help you and they turn you away. If staff like this exist in places that the public NEEDS, we've lost all hope then. read more

OFFICE IS CLOSED because of the CCP VIRUS HOAX. Fine, no problem. But you cant get online services if you cannot get an online account. I was calling in for two reasons: First to fix the online account, second to fix a name on the account. Called in and was happy to get someone to answer the phone right away at 915am on a Wednesday, BUT WHATA RUDE RUDE LADY!!!!! She was all snippy. I relied on the few reviews I found on yelp to help me deal with the anxiety of going to the Social Security office -- so I wanted to write about my experience and hope it helps others. Arrived 40 - 45 minutes before 9:00 AM opening and the line was so long, reaching almost to the parking lot gate. At around 8:45 AM, the security guards came out and placed signs with QR codes at strategic spots. Those who could scan the QR code and got assigned ticket numbers could line up separately and could get seated once they entered the building. Unfortunately, no matter how many times I had tried, I was unsuccessful and had to stay in the original line. There was a very helpful lady (thank you!) and everyone in line, as well as the security guards, were generally calm and cool. The line moved steadily and once I got to one of the two windows, my request was handled expeditiously (the staff made copies of the required documents I had brought along) and I didn't need to be assigned a number to wait to be called. I was out at around 9:45 AM -- and by that time, the line no longer went past outside the entrance. Overall, not knowing what to expect was scarier so -- if you need to go to this Social Security office, it will be all right... even though you cannot scan the QR code. read more
