An innovative approach to customer service is the online FastPass system, allowing people to schedule an appointment and avoid waiting in line when conducting business at the Clerk's office. The Selfridge Base is on its own a great place to visit, if you enjoy planes and all the supporting structures involved in running a base. It's fairly big and has a lot of interesting buildings and vehicles. If you're here as a tourist, you're probably here for the air show or the museum. The museum isn't big but it's definitely worth the trip. You'll find a number of planes on display with a couple that you can go inside and tour. You'll usually find volunteers who can give you some history of the planes and their service record. Inside is the usual museum type stuff; more artifacts related to military history and a gift store. You probably won't spend more than an hour or two but if you're an aviation buff it's well worth the trip and the small admission fee. The big thing for me was the air show, which I attended last weekend. The show is free and is pretty heavily staffed, with multiple areas of food and beverage service. You'll find a number of planes on display, several you can tour, but get there early or else you'll be waiting in a long line. I found it wasn't worth the wait time in the afternoon. The air show itself is spectacular. It progresses throughout the day, starting with older planes in the morning and working up to jets in the afternoon. You'll see vintage bombers and biplanes as well several acrobatic displays. The event is big - I heard they might have a hundred thousand people there over the weekend, but parking really wasn't that bad and you could pretty much find seating anywhere. The food isn't bad but it is pricey, just remember it's for the show. I heard something about a lockdown on cars leaving but it wasn't true; I was able to leave in the early afternoon. If you're really worried about the crowds, a number of people park at Menard's - enough that is has become catered by an ice cream truck! So hat's off to the military and their service, and for putting on a really pretty amazing event.

There was plenty of room for everyone. The main indoor space holds several tables and is equipped with a kitchen and restrooms. We also used a smaller barn for serving guests and used the huge lawn for vendor and beverage tents. There was also plenty of room on the grounds for a variety of food trucks and display cars for a car show. A full band was set up in an area large enough for a nice bandstand. I spoke with a woman who volunteers regularly at the venue. She had nothing but nice things to say about the management. Every inch of the grounds was clean and well-maintained. I'd definitely recommend it for events and special occasions.

An older vehicle drove the newly married couple around after the "I dos." After the ceremony, we moved indoors, which was adorned with pretty lighting and the tables were set up spectacularly. The venue was clean and they set up a drink stand when you walked in, having some popular mixed drinks available to be taken right away instead of waiting. The old car inside the reception area was a nice touch, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was (see the photos). I also came here for a private photo shoot about 1.5-2 years ago, and it is a lovely venue for a myriad of events.
