Many of the employees (who are usually great) often complain about working conditions only to leave shortly after starting. Those who were there for years also complain (in one case, decades), have left as well. This place has potential (and appears to once be great) but it is no where near where it was before.

Since I have no choice but to work full time, I want to know that my child is being well taken care of. The feeling that I get from Horizon and their amazing staff is a warm fuzzy feeling. Horizon is technically a day care center, but it's different than most. It is small enough to have a homey feel and there are not so many kids that they get lost in the shuffle (not to mention their cost per week can't be beat). I love watching my son run in there in the morning and walk around like he owns the place. He is at such comfort when he is there, and that's because these women truly love my son; they treat him like he is their own. Sue, the director has such a great presence at Horizon. She not only loves these kids, but loves her job; and you can tell. I have even run into her on the weekends shopping for groceries for Horizon. When you have people in place that love what they do, it reflects in our children. From the baby room with Ms. Molly, who is every bit of an angel here on earth, to the amazing women in the Pooh Room where my son is now, to even the older kids room, they all know my son and stop to love on him all the time. I am so glad I found this place and that my son loves it as much as I do.

We sat and spoke to the director, Kara and she couldn't have been any better putting my wife and I's nervousness/hesitation to rest. To this day I still talk to her and we plan on using the after school care program when my children start going to the public school in 9/2015. I appreciate people who don't handle me with kiddie gloves or sugarcoat things. If you ask Kara a question, she will be honest with you and that is all I ask. My kids were slightly younger than the other children in the Pre-K class but that program was absolutely perfect for them. At their previous daycare, they weren't being challenged and as a result they were acting out at home. Within 2 weeks of being there, my kids were able to write their name and started behaving better at home, something the previous place in Springfield wasn't teaching them. They were always learning something new and it was shocking how fast they were catching on to things. When my kids went there, the teachers for the Pre-K program were Ms. Alma & Ms. Ereen. They were fantastic. Another great thing about this place is that they make their own decisions with regards to snowstorms and "cold" weather. As Kara told me, they do their best to always open on time since they understand parents have to work. I sometimes didn't bring my kids to school when it snowed when every other entity closes but they were open. I learned that with the bigger centers like this one and the one my kids currently go to (My kids graduated from the Pre-K program and moved on) is that they are always open in the snow and makes it easier to manage "life" when bad weather hits. I would recommend this daycare, Pre-K to anyone looking for something new in the Centreville area or moving to the area. As I said we plan on going back there in the Fall for after school care.

I found him when I went to pick him up. They claimed they would be investigating the incident, but then never followed up. They never formally documented this via incident report for my signature. Had I not shown up when I did, I don't know if they would have informed me of this incident. 2) December 2022: My son was exposed to sexually inappropriate behavior from an older student enrolled at KinderCare. The staff apologized and said that they would "setup a program that talks about keeping hands to yourself". Again, this was never formally documented via incident report for my signature. Had my son not told me this happened, I would not have known. 3) December 2022: My daughter has a life-threatening food allergy to sesame, and I provided the center with epinephrine, Benedryl, and specific instructions provided by her allergist. On her last day, I asked to have these items back, to which they responded that there "must have been a loss of communication" because the items expired in October (it's now December) and thrown out. I was never notified, which means that my daughter has been attending school for 2+ months without access to life-saving medication. Not only is this absolutely negligent, THIS IS ILLEGAL (look up Elijah's Law in Virginia). To say that I am furious is an understatement, and I hope that NO ONE'S child ever suffers because their system for keeping medication properly stored is severely flawed. If you have children enrolled here that need access to medication, go ahead and ask them to show you where it's stored and see if it's accessible. It's likely that they threw it away and never told you, and your child is in danger. My top priority is always and WILL always be the safety of my children. The above incidents are not a result of "accidents" that happen due to watching toddlers. These are preventable safety issues that could be avoided if the staff here properly cared for these children. If your children aren't enrolled here and you're exploring options, look somewhere else.

The lead teacher of the toddler room, Atsupi Anthony, gave our 16 month old a cup of laundry detergent which she tried to drink, in addition to dish soap and hand soap. The only reason we know it happened is that she sent us a photo of it with a caption describing it. The Friday before this incident we had spoken to the director about other concerns with Ms Anthony's judgement. I observed her yelling to another teacher not to give a toddler food after his cheese stick fell on the floor ("he needs to learn a lesson and not drop he food") He's under 2, kids drop things. The director said she would investigate and counsel Ms Anthony, that we should trust her because she has many years of experience and parents love her. We notified the regional manager about the laundry detergent and Bright Horizons has, in accordance with their HR policy, decided to counsel her and leave her in charge of the class. Their policy is to counsel, reprimand and then terminate. The regional manager said that Ms Anthony doesn't have anything in her record, that the yelling incident was not recorded and they have to start with counseling her. I'm not sure you can counsel good judgement into someone and am not going to let her practice with my child. For these reasons we are concerned that Bright Horizons does not take safety seriously and have chosen to remove her.

Now being at Chesterbrook for over 6 months with our son, I would absolutely recommend it to anyone! The cleanliness and organization continue to stand out, along with the teachers and principals kindness and love to not only our son but the other children there. They use an app called Links2Home and we get 4-6 pictures on average of our son throughout the day. Communication through the app with the teachers and principals have been quick and responsive to our requests. Recently we had asked them to switch the order in which he eats, bottles first then solids and they adapted within the next feeding time for our son. This past Friday they had a petting zoo and give us monthly finger paintings our son has done. It's difficult to allow someone else to watch your only child but I will say I have seen him blossom and become so social with others as well as seeing his natural joy be nourished with the same love that my partner and I give. Gross and fine motor skills are worked on at each developmental stage starting with tummy time to using a writing utensil by toddlerhood. Children develop their language skills through music, offered once a week in English and once a week in Spanish. Classrooms are arranged for materials and activities to be accessed by children independently. Children are provided an opportunity to participate in educational activities of personal choice, following the Montessori approach. Every day my child has been at Montessori Children's Center Herndon, I have been confident they are in excellent hands and they are in an enriched learning environment!
