We stayed in the resort over several days. Our room was nice. It was decorated with a cabin theme,…read morelots of log furniture, pine and birch tree wall art, and a few moose decor items. Everything was clean. The room came with a fully stocked kitchenette which is nice if you want to do some cooking but we ate out. No stove but there is a hot plate, dishwasher and refrigerator. It's nice to have a couch and TV separate from the bedroom. We golfed at The Legend and The Quarry. They were beautiful courses Fairways and greens were well maintained. Legend was a little less than 5100 from the forward tees which was very fair. Quarry was closer to 5200, so longer and much more narrow. Don't forget to look for the giant bear claw on The Legend. Lots of driving between some holes but enjoy the scenery while you are cruising. Great courses. I struggled to rate this. I loved the golf but the accommodations had some pros and cons. Lodging pros - separate bedroom and living area - kitchenette - close to everything we wanted to do - Two TVs Lodging cons - the shower water never got really hot to that end the jacuzzi in the room was never used because we couldn't get it hot enough to want to sit in it - separate rooms are nice but controlling the temp was hard as air conditioning was in bedroom but thermostat was in living room. There are fans to help but in the end the bedroom was usually very cold - the TV in the bedroom was hit or miss on displaying channels. - WiFi was hit or miss. - rooms are owned by individuals so it's like renting a vrbo. To that end, no housekeeping. Not sure if you could request it. We didn't stay long enough for it to be a major issue.

FIVE Stars on the YELP Hiking Walk of Fame for a simple reason: FAMOUS X- COUNTRY SKI RACE and I…read morejust hiked it! Okay, 11 miles of it. First off. Stop by the visitor center in downtown Hayward. They have maps, a topo map, bumper stickers, magnets, shirts, etc. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable about the Birkie, as they call it. Now to the hiking experience. I started at OO Trailhead. Two mountain bikers were there with me but they were l. The Cambra Trail System and I was on the Birkie. The Birkie "hiking" trail is the actual x-country ski race trail. It's basically a "field" between dense forest. I hike the Birkie RED trail, not BLUE classic trail (unmowed) was literally alone the entire time save the loggers that were clear cutting near Boedecher Rd, one German Shepherd guarding a log trucker, two Cambra mountain Bike Trail maintainers and one snake. It was one of the oddest hikes I've done. In 11 miles there was ONE place to sit down. The Boedecher warming hit which was mid-construction. Other than that it was knee high weeds on the trail. Zero water opportunities. I'm use to that in a drought but not after months of Midwest rain. There was literally no where to get water. I hike with 3 liters so I was good. The Seeley Fire Tower doesn't exist even if the map says "Fire Tower" on it! Scat! Bear scat and what appeared like wolf or coyote scat. Never saw any but that doesn't mean they didn't see me. There was evidence of best because three red box aid stations were demolished from bear claws. I look forward to putting my Birkie sticker on the CRV. #done

I have stayed at the Lodge 3 years in a row now with my family for a weekend fall color getaway…read more This year's trip was by far the worst. We stayed there the first weekend of October. I paid 300 a night for a hillside view room. When I checked in I was told all the rooms in the lodge are independently owned, like condos. Thought it was weird but no biggie. Got to the room and it was toward the end of the building with hardly a hillside view. I went to the front desk and asked to change rooms. I was told none of the rooms really had a hillside view and was told they were booked up. Ok fine. Went back to the room and it was in rough shape, big chip on toilet seat, dings and scratches all over the walls, mismatched paint on the walls where they tried to cover it up, and the room was roasting despite it being the first weekend of October. The thermostat on the wall did not work, but there was a note next to it saying to use the heating/cooling unit in the bedroom to control the room temp. Only problem is that cools the bedroom but not the rest of the place. Our whole stay my daughter slept on the pull out futon in the living room with a fan on her while I was freezing in the bedroom. The last straw and the main reason I am writing this review is that my wife, daughter and I hiked up the hillside. When we got almost to the top my daughter started feeling dizzy, weak and nauseous. She has a medical history of having low blood pressure. My wife took her to get a ride down to the bottom of the hill on the chairlift due to her medical issues and was not only dismissed by the girl working, she was basically called a liar and a scammer just trying to get a free ride. My daughter felt so bad and cried, all while having a medical issue. My wife and daughter were turned away by the lady working. A male co worker of the lady witnesses the interaction and apologized. He then gave them a ride to the bottom of the hill on a utility vehicle. I emailed the lodge about what happened, looking for them to address the indicent with the Terrible female employee but have not received a response for almost 2 weeks now. I am writing this review so that others are aware of our experience with this Family Friendly" resort.

I've normally had a good experience at Mt Ashwabay but today it was't so good. I checked the prices…read moreon the website and saw that it was $18 from 1:00 to 4:00 so that is when I planned to go, because I didn't have much time anyway. As it was I got there a little after 2:00 and was eager to get out on the slopes. When I got my ticket I was charged $25 and when I questioned it I was told that the $18 rate didn't start until 3:00 and I would have to speak to the manager, John (I think it was). I tried to find him and in the end they had to radio for him. Finally he showed up and said they would charge me $18 but he didn't seem too happy about it and didn't apologize about the website being incorrect. I said "well it did say it was $18 at 1:00 on the website". He said something like "well I'm giving you the $18 rate aren't are." He wasn't apologetic and seemed really unhappy that he had given me the lower rate. I don't think this is good customer service. I love to come up to Bayfield for the weekend because there are a lot of cool things to do so we try to cram a lot in. This makes time tight. Next time I may skip Mt Ashwabay and go somewhere else instead.

After ski school, we went on the slopes but stuck to the easy greens & played on the tubing hill. It was a blast! Afterwards, hit the bar for some hot chocolate & beer.
