We had been planning to go on this trip up to St. Anthony to visit Roxy's Sweets & Treats/Roxy's…read moreSweet Nightmares on Tuesday--But for one reason or another, it took a month for that specific Tuesday, when we finally were able to load the three of us into the car for the drive. We all think the idea of a horror theme cafe is super cool, but one of us is a huge horror buff--like Edgar Allen Poe is her soulmate. So we had all been really excited for this day. We had an itinerary for the whole day, with a couple stops of planned stops along the way. The idea was to arrive at Roxy's right at our lunchtime for an icecream and espresso experience for desert. Well, that didn't happen. We got there quite a bit early, and checked out the place. Don't get me wrong, there is horror movie pics, and decor on the entrance walls, and some in the adjecent, small dining room, but it was not at all what we were hoping for after researching it. I mean, this makes me feel a little sad, cuz the woman who owns/runs the shop is very nice, friendly, talkative, and has a lot on her plate, plus running the business. It's a great idea, but she just can't keep up. The place is dirty, and the bathrooms looked and smelled like they rarely get a good cleaning. What's supposed to be horror focused, and could be with some effort, looks given up on, and now a crystals and novelty shop. That whole back shop, which is pretty cool, has some unique stuff, is in pretty much disarray. We saw this, and met the very nice owner, but with time to kill we wanted to see other things. So, we told her we'd be back in a bit for lunch, and went on a walk down the road. We spent most of that time at an awesome park along the river (Which I will be reviewing), and as promised, we returned to Roxy's for lunch. Ok, we didn't get our Ice cream and espresso experience. Online claims she has like 12 flavors--she had four basic flavors. I still got a strawberry shake with my lunch, which was good and made me happy! The menu is all horror themed names like the Frankenstein Chicken sandwhich, and other items like Buffy's Garlic Burger. I got the Frankenstein, and for a tiny little kitchen, using all re-invented prepackaged stuff, it wasn't bad--good actually. By re-invented I mean, she takes like frozen chicken pieces, and stews or simmers them in her secret sauce (which she doesn't share, keeps secret) to make some pretty tasty stuff. She does the same kind of thing with the frozen beef patties that she buys. My other half said the burger she got, was not like snashed in house, but no way did it seem like store bought frozen patties. So thumbs up to her. All in all--it just doesn't live up to its name or hype. Go there, not for horror, but for a tasty bite, friendly service, and to find some pretty cool stuff in the shop! 4*
