In the last 24 years, I have been a patient of 4 or 5 different neurologists with JWM and have always been pretty pleased with the care that I've received from my actual neurologist. My only reasons for changing providers thru the years have been for things like moving or needing a provider that could fit with my schedule. My current neurologist, Dr Edward Zdobylak, listens to me, validates my thoughts and concerns and has listened to me from the start about what works for me and what doesn't. Some visits have felt a bit rushed, so I started making a list of things to discuss beforehand. That has helped tremendously. Currently, Botox for migraines has been working extremely well as a preventive for my chronic migraine. I'm typically sent to the Carmel location for my Botox injections to be able to keep to the 12 week schedule and maximize my migraine relief. The same medical assistant frequently does my injections for me, and I do really like her. She is friendly, personable and remembers me and things we've discussed previously. Office staff is friendly and welcoming. If they aren't busy, they often make chatter while getting your paperwork and such wrapped up. The Carmel location doesn't have free Wifi and my cell service is terrible in this building. Thankfully they have never left me waiting more than 15 minutes. My only real complaint is the struggle to get timely responses to refill requests. 9 times out of 10, it takes calling my doctors assistant twice within 3/4 days to get a response and then a refill sent. It has been like that consistently for the 3 years that I've been with Dr Zdobylak. I've complained a few times and nothing changes. So I've just accepted it for what it is because I don't want to change neurologists. I thought possibly the issue may be with the way the doctors travel about, but I used the Anderson location for many years and never had this issue.

Many doctors have too many patients to remember them from appointment to appointment, let alone their specific needs. They rely on appointment notes instead of getting to know the patient themselves. They loose test results and don't pay attention to medication dosages. Unfortunately, many patients are just another number and not seen as individuals. I have been dealing with them for over 15 years with my husband, father and now my daughter. If you can find someone outside of the JWM group, I would go with them instead.

However, I was unable to get past the rude receptionist. I had called to see if Dr. Smartt was accepting new patients. The person on the phone indicated that he was taking new patients. She said I needed a referral. I explained that I was currently see a Neurologist however I wanted to see Dr. Smartt instead. She said I needed to have my records sent to the office. I went on line and filled out the documentation, when to the office to take the application along with my insurance card and identification. She stayed on phone after I walked in. Another person came in behind me. She got off the phone, spoke with him for a few moments and then he went to sit in the waiting room. Meanwhile, I am waiting to see if she will address me since I had been waiting for her to get off the phone and to speak with me. Finally, I walked up to her desk and explained I was the person who had called to see if Dr. Smartt was accepting new patients. I told her I had filled out the documentation on line and that I had filled out the request to have my records submitted to Dr. Smartt. She took the paperwork and said she would call after she received the records. A week has past, I had not heard anything from Dr. Smartt's office so I called to see if the person at the front desk had received the documentation, she said she had not received the documentation. I contacted the other office, they indicated they had sent all documentation to Dr. Smartt's office and that they had document to show date and time. I ask if they could resend the documentation. They had no problem resending the documentation. After they sent the documentation they called me back to let me know they had resent all documentation. After two weeks of not hearing anything from Dr. Smartt's office, I called his office to ask if they had received my records from the other office. The person who answered the call asked me for my information of which I gave her. She then placed me on hold for 23 minutes and never returned. I called back, and the answering machine immediately sent me to voice mail. I called back again, this time it gave me a message saying that they could not see me until they had receive all records. The documentation as sent twice as of today (a month later) no follow-up phone call. I also hope that the person who did not follow up has shredded all my PHI as well as the copy of my insurance card and my ID. Needless to say, I never got to meet Dr. Smartt. I will never know if Dr. Smartt was a good as the young lady had indicated. Hopefully, if you want to see Dr. Smartt you will find a way to see him, as I was unable. Good Luck

Now, in 2021, I feel I finally have decent control over them, as long as my medical needs and medications are met. Timely is the key...and that's the only frustration that remains for me sometimes, when working with this office. The staff is unbelievably professional and kind. I've lost my temper a few times thru the years out of pain and frustration. Yet I have always been treated with professionalism and understanding. I've watched other patients walk in and begin yelling at staff up front about things that are completely out of their control and the way they handled it was seriously impressive. When I mentioned it to my neurologist, she explained that they know how pain effects people...and often it makes them angry. I can sadly relate. Hence, a huge reason I want my pain managed as best as it can be. This office has fought back and forth with my insurance for as longs as it takes to get them to approve needed medications and given me samples to get me thru. Ultimately, I'm glad I stayed with this office. My daily chronic migraine is, by my standards, decently under control. I'm still debilitated 3-5 days a month, but that feels like nothing compared to 20+ days a month. There is still an issue of things slipping thru the cracks with voice-mail requests. It won't happen for quite some time and then I seem to hit a wall of it happening several times in row. This is clearly a busy office, and in all other areas I'm pretty happy.

A health care provider can't bill a medicaid recipient at all for that, even if I had a ride but just didn't feel like going The transport company called them and explained it to them and they hung up on them. That appointment was over 1.5 yrs ago and they still bill me. They call, send bills in the mail and it's in my chart that I owe them $25 Riding the line: Didn't actually have a neurologist on staff when I asked for one. There was one next door but they didn't accept my insurance. Dr. Kundi's staff said they weren't associated, but was also told Dr. Kundi "isn't that type of neurologist". One THEY prescribed. (It took me a long time to correct that after they put it in my chart. I asked them to look in my files to see 1 I was on the drug and 2 that it was them that prescribed it. Then I had to find a medical journal to quote and show them.) They did nothing but scold me and still prescribed my pain medicine as usual. Stay out of this unethical cesspool.

There are over a dozen offices throughout the Midwest if this office isn't convenient. Parking is convenient with a parking garage under the building with the elevator going directly to Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine's Office on the 2nd floor. Dr. McCanna is very approachable and easy to talk too. He reviews Xrays and MRI in layman terms and takes the time to answer any and all of my questions. His surgical description is clear and easy to follow. Scheduling me with Dr. Wilson for a nerve block reduced the pain almost immediately until I was ready for surgery and a true blessing. Dr. McCanna is thorough, doesn't take unnecessary risks or rush to surgery if he feels there are unnecesaary risks during or after with healing i.e. postponing my surgery due to a A1c number to high risking my healing process. I was scheduled for surgery to replace my C-6 and C-7 due to degenerative disc disease. The day of surgery went well and I felt I was in excellent hands. I was still nervous but the surgical team did a great job reassuring me. I have to give a huge shout-out to Emma Schulte, Dr. McCanna's Neurosurgical Physician Assistant, who is invaluable, totally accessible and has a fabulous rapport with her patients. She provided follow up calls as promised, interacted with my liver doctors and transplant coordinator and I always felt she was on top of my case. I cannot say enough great things! My four week post op visit went quickly and smoothly. Xrays are done in office 15 minutes prior to physicians appointment by a very nice, friendly tech. The wait time was minimal for all appointments. My scar has healed nicely and is barely noticeable on my neck. Great job and thank you Dr. McCanna! I still have a couple additional follow up appointments until I'm back to 100% but I feel like I'm almost there. Thank you to all who participated in my treatment plan.
