I did not know about this shop until very recently (I only went to Maplewood for the first time a few months ago). Before talking about the shop itself, I will say that during my recent visit the staff was very nice (this included two young women and one older one - possibly the owner?). I overheard them having several conversations with customers and they all seemed very familiar and friendly. Of course, this is just my experience, so take that as you will. No. 165 (so named for the building number) is an absolutely adorable, comfortable and whimsical shop in Maplewood. They sell all sorts of items ranging from novelty items, candy, clothes, stationary, dish towels, purses, soaps and more. Everything in the shop is either meant to be charming, beautiful or tongue-in-cheek and I love that combination. Interestingly, I saw a note on the counter that indicated at some point last year this shop was going to close, but a strong reaction from the neighborhood helped the owner to change their mind and keep the shop open. What that meant on a practical level is that during my visit a lot of the shelves were definitely more bare than I think they would normally be. This decision is recent, so I am hoping that means in the next couple months the store will restock and have more to offer than it already has. If you're in the area, definitely make it a point to visit No. 165!

It was also very hot inside the store to the point where it was nauseating. I visited the restroom on my visit and there was toilet paper all over the floor and feces in the toilets. It was too messy and too hot to shop for long, so I didn't purchase anything and will not be back to try again.

The store is taking on a model similar to Marshalls and Conway, which not only sell designer clothes cheap, but load the store up with other random things like Novelty Bluetooth speakers, Toys, car mats and As seen on TV merchandise and much more. No really. It's kinda cool, but makes the store more cluttered than it needs to be. The store is huge and has clothes and shoes that range from toddlers to adolescents, men and women, so It can be a good one stop-shop for the family. Most of the clothes are "urban style" clothing, but you could catch anyone wearing the stuff here. So overall the store is alright, but there are always things that bug me about the it. The latest is one of the clearance racks is "2 designed button ups for $10" Just the deal I'm looking for. I look through it and find a couple in my size that I like. I wait in the long line and am told one of my choices isn't part of the clearance. It's the same brand and size but a more attractive design and several of them are on the rack. The cashier is insistent that it's a mistake and they need to remove those particular shirts from the rack. Why does it matter? Again they're all the same brand, on the same clearance rack , and it's not just one there's like 10! Rather than argue about it I put it back and grabbed a different shirt, again same brand, but not quite is nicely designed. You'll put up with some headaches, but you can save a few dollars here on some threads.

I have picked up quite a few things in here and all at reasonable prices. Display pieces styled nicely and while not for everyone- definitely on my standard rotation. Downstairs are items for the home, old and recent. If you read a review that says the proprietor isn't friendly and that is a concern to you - don't go. She's not there to make friends, she's managing a business and probably has enough friends! Vintage, classic pieces and totally worth checking out. I'm a fan.

The decor and layout really help to set the vibe and atmosphere. Second, the shop's playlist was one point -- the kind of music you listen to if you're ever home trying on clothes or when you're getting ready for a night out. Their selection is cool, trendy and fit better than I expected. I'm switching up my style this year so I tried on a few things I wouldn't normally try on and I loved seeing myself in something sexy and different and a little risqué even (not pictured ;)). The shop attendant made me feel welcome and comfortable and not pressured while shopping (which I really appreciate). I got a few trinkets for myself and will be back for more.
