Caffe Nero

I met a friend on her lunch break in this little cafe (or should it be caffe?) today, and thought…read morethat it was a little bit unique in terms of how a Caffe Nero usually goes. For starters, although we were there at one of the busiest times of day, the staff worked fluidly and without hiccup which meant that, although there were only three of them, the service was very quick and the queue eaten up fast. The price isn't that much different from a Starbucks, but they have a few different (of not really any more interesting) selections of food and drink. Although why they only allow one size of Chai Latte, I'll never understand. There are two problems with this Caffe Nero, however. Firstly, the doors. Once upon a time, in mid and snowy winter, they wouldn't close properly. Now, they barely open, and everyone struggles just to get in a out. Secondly, there is no toilet actually on the premises. This cafe is technically part of House of Fraser, and therefore gets away with claiming their toilets as their own. So be warned; the loos are quite a way away through a never ending warren of fashion and fragrance. But, they always give you two stamps on your coffee card. Winner.

I used to frequent the Caffe Nero in St John St regularly and when it is not busy, it is the best…read more With the added bonus of the out door tables and chairs - bathing sunshine after a harsh Winter - not bad at all. I have since sworn my allegiance to the larger Caffe Nero however, just around the corner, opposite the Castle in Duke St. Just a bit more spacious and when really quiet, extremely relaxing and a super escape to read the daily papers that are dispersed around for people to enjoy. The coffee is excellent, food stuffs great. But, the biggest deal for me is the friendliness of the staff. As a foot note; I have yet to go into a Caffe Nero and strike a 'rude' one. I think that politeness and friendliness must be a pre-requisite to being given a job with Nero. The staff take their work very seriously and if you are not happy with what has been poured, they oblige you another, no hesitation. In other words, their customer skills are near to perfection. If you are a rather sociable person like me, and like a friendly, personable smile awaiting you with your coffee, along with a bit of banter, Caffe Nero is the place. Whatever the management team are doing, they're doing it right. So few places these days give polite service. It is almost like 'they' are doing you the favour, so drink up and shove off. It is wonderful to walk in somewhere and be made special, like 'Cheers' where everyone gets on, everyone remembers 'your usual' and the entire experience is one of joy - something a little bit softer to look forward to in today's harsh world.

I feel so bad to give this place such a poor rating, but I am basing it solely on my experience…read morethere, as well as the experience of those with me. Never have I been so disappointed in a place as I have been with this one. The decor and sound of everything on the menu was just outstanding. I was visiting my boyfriend's family in Wales when they suggested us go here for a late lunch. They said that the customer service was a bit lousy as the place tries to be hipsterish (is bad customer service associated with hipsters!? I don't know but hellllllll naw if so), but that the food and atmosphere was pretty on point. We arrived there with a fairly large group and found our way upstairs to sit. The decor of the place was quirky and rather cool, in my opinion. I also loved the large wooden tables. The restaurant is swarming with children and super loud music. The children are obviously nothing to complain about (as I was with children at the time), but the music was soooo loud. We were sat in a corner near a speaker, but it was still unmanageable when we initially sat at another table initially. I couldn't even hear those around me speak. We were told that Fino had great burgers. I opted for a falafel and butternut squash burger and my boyfriend opted for the Hero burger. The falafel burger (which comes on a brioche bun) also comes with a tomato and red pepper chutney, wood roasted peppers, red onions, a side of slaw, french fries, and halloumi and ruccola on the burger. Nothing was that tasty. The falafel itself was super dry and overly sweet. The chutney tasted way too sweet and almost more like a jam instead of a balanced out chutney. The halloumi was okay but not enough of it. The fries were alright, but I wish we had been given a menu option instead of fries. And the slaw was just terrible. Pickle that stuff guys! Or something! It was really lousy. The brioche bun (which, too, was dry) was too sweet for this sweet of a dish. My boyfriend will review his burger (which he thought was awful) on another review. His mother ordered a salmon fish cake and was extremely disappointed, as well. She said it was overly dry and the poached egg on top was way overdone. One of my bigger complaints about this place is that it tries to be innovative and 'hip', yet has the crappiest beer selection of nearly any place I have ever been. Not many craft beers or even Welsh beers. I ordered a Cruiser Atlantic Pale Ale. It was alright, but more choices (AND NOT PERONI) would have been pretty amazing. I'm certainly not going to be heading back here next time I'm in Cardiff. The menu and place has so much potential. And given the ratings on Yelp, it seems as though most people don't mind the food. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

I wish there were more places like this in Cardiff, places that work with community and offer up something less mainstream that provides the arts scene in city a really good base. Defiantly think its worth checking out their brochure and find out whats going on, and get down there and support the place.

Comprised of a cinema, gallery, theatre, café-bar, dance studios, workshop spaces and bookshop, it is, quite literally, an all singing, all dancing, creative hub. It also happens to be one of my most loved havens in Cardiff. I spent the best part of Monday there, (which wasn't my intention... it's just a very difficult place to leave!) I regularly ensconce myself in the newly refurbed café, lunching out whilst taking advantage of the extremely quick wifi they provide. These days there are plenty of sockets so that everyone who wants to can plug-in, (in the bad old days I have had to queue to get to a socket when I ran out of juice... there just weren't enough to go round). The facilities have improved across the board since vast sums of money have been spent modernising the space. There are two schools of thought regarding the refurbishments, with the old guard firmly protesting the changes, and people like me, who think that it has lost nothing of its charm, and are grateful for the improvements that have been made. I guess not everyone appreciates change. Oh well, done now!
