B) going through some changes that delays their ability to respond, or C) just isn't that great, but i've been trying to get in touch with them to see if they can help fix the permanent mistake i made at age 17 (aka: a bright blue hibiscus flower on the top of my foot...). per the instructions on their site ("For a free estimate, text a close-up picture of your tattoo with a Metro Card next to it to 917-691-1744"), i begrudgingly pulled my foot out of it's sock hiding spot and texted them a pic of the damage. no response. i followed up 3 days later to check in. no response. i messaged them via yelp -- the very spot i discovered them in the first place. no response. TL;DR: i still have an ugly flower tattoo on my foot and it doesn't look like Smooth will be able to help me fix that any time soon. read more

My tattoo was a little smudge for some reason, it become very weird so I decided to light it up and have some cover up. I found smooth online, Genevieve is so nice and professional. She knows what she's doing and explain things well. Today is my second visit, my skin is still flaky so she wants to me come back after a longer period of time. This is a hole in the wall type of laser joint. My wife went here and ended up with terrible scars and has to spend 10 times more money now to fix the scars. It seems like this place is a lot cheaper compared to competitors but it comes at a cost. The cost being high risk of getting burnt by a laser and scars. I went to Smooth for laser removal of a tattoo and was very pleased with the results. I am actually one of the test cases on her web site, and it's virtually gone now. No one can tell that I ever had a tattoo now. It took about 6 sessions (everyone's tattoo is different and will require varying amounts of treatment). I applied the medicated numbing cream as well as took some advil before each session, but it was still painful. If you cannot handle pain, you should see a dermatologist who can totally numb you out with shots. But if you got the tattoo in the first place- the laser pain is pretty much the same (feels like hot bacon grease splashing on your skin). Carol is a specialist in TATTOO REMOVAL. I am not sure that I would trust a non-doctor for anything but that. She has never represented herself as a doctor. She also zapped some tiny veins in my nostrils- they came back after about 6 months so I would not consider this a worthwhile use of your money. I am very, very pleased with the results of my tattoo removal, especially for the price. read more

I had gone about 5x 3 years ago and my tattoo (blue ink 1" x 4") is 70% removed so it's quite effective. I just went back a week ago for some more work on this and Carol and her staff have been pleasant as ever. The reason I gave 4 out of 5 stars is the price. My tattoo removal was $175 which seems like a ridiculous amount for a couple of minutes of work. The yelp reviews for Smooth seem genuine. Be careful of fake Citysearch and Yelp reviews for competitors. I almost went to a more convenient competitor until I realized their CitySearch views were all frauds: all first time reviewers for five stars on the same day. Some tips for your experience at Smooth: - Skip the $50.- pain reduction cream - as we say in the Marines, it builds character and keeps your wallet fat - Space your sessions about two months apart or until you've seen that your tattoo has fully healed. It takes time for your body to recover and to get rid of the broken-down ink. You cannot rush tattoo removal. - Ask Carol to do the removal slowly. Thank goodness for Genevieve and Carol! It was by sheer chance that I found them on Yelp, and I couldn't be more thankful that I did. Getting ink taken off is a painful process, both physically and emotionally. Genevieve (who did my treatments) was not only extremely adept at her work, but also kind, comforting, and knowledgeable throughout the year+ of my treatments. Scheduling was a breeze (Genevieve even fit me in for emergency sessions before long work trips and once, when I actually came on the wrong day!), and Carol always texted to confirm appointments the morning of. They were also very communicative, hence my surprise at some of these other reviews. Finally, Genevieve was extremely realistic when it came to the actual results of the treatements--she didn't sugar-coat the possibilities and gave me all the information and resources I needed to make decisions about it. I thought all of these reviews I read were too good to be true and I am ecstatic to say that they were all correct. a little history- Went to Dr. Zizmor- we have all seen the ads. He charged me 500 for my tattoo which is about 6 inches long and an 1 1/2 inches wide. He said he had to charge me extra for the color. His laser looked old and busted but I paid it anyway like a chump. Nothing happened, barely any change. fast forward after a year has gone by-I decided to try again and this time I look at yelp for someone with actual positive reviews. I go to smooth laser and get a free consultation ( I paid 100.00 for Zizmor). Dr. Carol O'Brien didn't waste my time. She met me at the door, no waiting. Two minutes later told me each sesssion would be 200.00. I was sold. The place was clean and modern and she was friendly and knowledgeable. She pointed out the laser to remove the black and the one for the color which Dr. Zizmor didn't have. He lied and overcharged me for a machine he did not possess. It cost an additional 60 bucks for cream to use at home for before your appointment to numb the pain. I decided to be treated right then. Sat with the cream for maybe 45 min and did not feel a thing. At Zizmor's I sat with a different cream for over an hour and FELT EVERYTHING. Dr. O'Brien is the way to go for tattoo removal. I will shout it (or yelp it in this case) to anyone who needs it. She also does hair removal and pigmentation removal as well. I will see her in a month and will update my post on how much of my tattoo was removed. read more

After a terrible idea at age 18, and four years of removal treatments, my tattoo is GONE! Big thank you to Smooth, and Carol. She is not only a fantastic and kind person, but she is very, very good at what she does. I saw a very pricey cosmetic dermatologist in SF, and her tattoo removal treatments were not at all effective (two years of treatments with minimal results). Once I began seeing Carol, I saw a HUGE difference in the results. Yes, there is a little bit of scarring, but that comes with the territory. Carol is great! Went in for an initial consultation for a 5" x 5" fairy tattoo, black and grey a few months ago at the beginning of the summer, and started my first laser session immediately after. She made me feel very comfortable and was willing to go at whatever pace with breaks if I wanted. I personally just like her going straight through with the tool which blows air and pricks the skin. It does hurt which she warns but she offers Advil, numbing cream and whatnot. And as I mentioned tries to be as soothing as possible asking if you're okay and if you need a break. With the recommended 4-8 week spacing it's very easy to schedule and afford each session. Speaking of scheduling - she makes it easy to do it through texting afterwards which is great for people who don't like talking on the phone! I believe today I just had my fifth session - for a tattoo that has already faded A LOT, my friends have been very impressed at the progression. I have medium Indian skin tone and I was worried if the machine would work okay with my color and it definitely has! I can't wait to start my other tattoo removal next year and be tattoo free by next summer. Tip 1: I have a back tattoo and my go to position which Carol herself commended is to lie down on my stomach, head down, close eyes, and clench my fists open and shut. I keep forgetting to bring a stress ball but that would surely help, as well as breathing in and out. Of course, everyone's skin and pain threshold is different so do take that into consideration. Tip 2: Start now in the fall/winter! Carol warns you that there will be redness, possible bumps, and itchiness a day or 2 after each treatment. The colder weather is a great time to take care of visible back, arm, leg tattoos as most of those areas will be covered up and people can't see the skin irritation. Don't worry about the 1-2 days after as the redness diminishes and the tattoo itself fades more and more with time. read more

Carrol works wonders. I was nervous at first, but went to her because my friend had a tattoo removed by her, and her tattoo is completely gone. I had blue and green shooting stars outlined in black behind my ear. After 4 sessions they are fading to oblivion, with no blisters or scarring. I got my tattoo around 2006 or so (since then, some tattoo artists have switched to acrylic ink). I recommend buying a package right off the bat to save money. However, I didn't think the numbing cream made much of a difference. The recovery is fine, after each session my tattoo was tender and slightly bruised (outlined in purple from the bruise) for a couple days. Thank you for helping me achieve a more professional look. Carol has had a major positive impact on my life! When I was 18, I got an awful black tattoo on my stomach, and at age 28 I wanted to remove it. After one visit Carol confidently told me that she could remove the tattoo. Her original estimate was 6-8 sessions, but I ended up going to 10 sessions to completely remove the ink. The removal is a bit painful. It feels like an acute hot snap... but of course you are removing ink from your body, so it's not going to be a painless process. The area bled for a copule days and I scabbed up each time. As the ink was removed, the skin got a bit darker. I was worried about scarring and skin discoloration, but Carol told me that my specific case was going very well. I believed her. The process took about a year. It is now three years since I got the final treatment. There is absolutely no ink left in my skin, there is no scarring, and there is no skin discoloration. It's like I never got the tattoo in the first place. Perfect! Carol did an amazing job and I am so lucky that I found her. I also got some freckles/marks taken off my face and I feel more confident. read more

I had my freckles removed recently by Carol, and am very happy I did it with her. I made an appointment for a free consultation, and she listened to my stories of why I wanted to remove my freckles etc.. and answered all the questions/concerns I had regarding the laser treatment. Carol made me feel very comfortable and I decided to go ahead and have it done after the consultation. My treatment itself was very quick, and I had almost no pain. I had sort of a burning feeling where the treatment were done, but it went away after 3-4 hours. A week later, 1 of 2 freckles are completely gone, the other one got smaller & almost invisible - just as Carol said how it might turn out during the consultation. I might go back to get 2nd treatment done for the one almost gone. So far, I am very happy with the result :) read more

Genevieve is amazing--very professional and knows her stuff! I have an old cover up of a cover up of a cover up....I call it my "teenage mistake." Genevieve assessed the layers of different colors and explained the entire process step by step in terms of how each color could be removed. She also gave me options as far as removing multiple colors in the same visit or taking a slower approach, all with cost & pain tolerance in mind. Sadly, I have been seeing Carol for a whopping 15 years! I had a disgusting tribal tattoo on my chest that she fully removed . I came back to see her after I tattood my exes name on my wrist, which is fully gone! I have recently decided to remove all the tattoos I got when I was a kid, I'm midway through. Please KEEP IN MIND - the laser has to be at its highest setting to remove all color. I have referred many friends to Carol. She is always honest about expectations and potential side effects. Excellent experience every time! Genevieve has a gentle touch and great "bedside manner" and makes you feel very comfortable through an otherwise painful experience. Something to help this painful tattoo removal experience is to get the lidocaine cream, apply it generously over the treatment area two hours before the appointment and you will absolutely coast through the treatment! There is a lot of hating on Smooth lately, which prompted me to write a review about my great experience there. Carol is the best - she is very upfront about setting expectations on tattoo removal. I have a foot tattoo I'm in the process of getting removed, which is a sonofabitch being that it is two colors - black and red, combined to create brown. Poor move in hindsight, Sarah. Anyways, though I'm spending more than I ever thought I would on removal, I'm seeing results. Make sure to mention the Facebook deal, and you'll get $25 off your first session. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. Carol O-Brien is NOT an doctor. She is NOT qualified to handle laser. It was the biggest mistake that I went to get the treatment by her. I don't want this to happen to anyone anymore. I wanted to remove 2-3 dark spots that I had on my cheek, so I decided to go to her. She examined my face, and recommended to do overall facial laser treatment for $200, instead of treating just the 2-3 small spots. She showed me the picture albums of the successful treatments, and said it's easy to treat those kind of pigmentation. Of course I was thrilled to have it done for such a reasonable price. She said my skin is pretty fair skin(for Asian), and do the gentle laser. It turned out, all the spots she lasered got burnt right away horribly, although she said it's normal. All the spots blistered, and flaked off, then it appeared all the spots were disappeared for about a week... Then, NIGHTMARE HAPPENED. All the burnt marks by the laser, which is so much bigger than the original pigmented spots, came back as ugly brown patches all over my face!!! I went back to Carol to get any explanations, and she looked so nervous and could not even look into my eyes, and gave me absolutely NO advise or explanation- rather she told me to maybe try taking some herbal medicine and vitamin D, and said it helped her husband's random skin rashes...!! She told me apologetically that one person out of 60 people have the similar result. First of all, she should have told me about the fact before the treatment! Secondly, it is a CRIME to do the whole facial treatment like she did to me without doing any test patch, knowing the risk she knew it could happen. She has NO IDEA what she's doing, and she's a COMPLETE FAKE! I should have known that she is NOT a professional, she's a LIER. I should have gone to the REAL DOCTOR from the begging... now I am going to have to pay so much money to have the scars she made on my face removed by the real doctors... I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO GO TO HER, SHE SHOULD NOT BE HANDLING LASER ON ANYONE BUT HER OWN FACE. read more

A+ for Carol O'Brien, the owner, herself. D for her staff, who are disinterested & noncommittal to the point of being rude. The office is clean and well-appointed, if a bit small, and you definitely won't have the impression that you've gone to some weird back-alley kind of set-up. Easily accessible from the 59th-Lex 4/5/6/N/R stop. I found it easy to book an appointment quickly, and in a time that worked for me. I was also assured (truthfully) that if I wanted to go through my first treatment at the same appointment as my consultation, I could do so. This might not always be true, given how booked they are, but it was clearly a quiet day and the tattoo I am having lightened/removed is only an inch square. Carol was friendly and calming, and explained the process in helpful detail. The only thing I didn't appreciate was that, upon learning that this was my only tattoo (I am lightening it for a preferred coverup), she made unsolicited comments about how I could be tattoo-free, and that tattoos don't age well. I'm sure that after removing hundreds of ill-conceived tattoos, you'd start to believe that tattoos in general are a terrible idea, but it felt a bit intrusive and interfering to me. I felt her instructions on aftercare were a little vague -- this may have been because I was calm and already familiar with many details of how laser lightening works, but I did feel the need to research aftercare when I got home, just to make sure that I wasn't setting myself up for a scar. In the aftermath, my skin was a tiny bit more sensitive for the first few hours, and there's a little bit of redness at the outside edges of the tattoo -- I've had no discomfort, and no scabbing or bleeding. The process was very quick and only very mildly painful, and Carol was clearly prepared to take breaks as I needed. She uses a cold air blaster to assist the process, which helps with the discomfort, and (at the medium setting, which is the first session) it feels quite a bit like someone repeatedly snapping a thick rubber band on your skin, with a lingering "afterburn" sensation. I *really* appreciated that she updated me as she went on how far along we were: "50% done, 80% done, only about 10% left" and so on -- it made it really easy to bear the sensation for just a little bit longer, knowing how close we were to being done. I also appreciated that she broke down the process for me, and explained that the first session uses the medium setting on the laser, while the next sessions require a deeper (and more uncomfortable setting), etc. and how I could prepare myself for that discomfort. It's comforting to know what I'm in for, and to have a basis of comparison for what the upcoming experience will be like. For my 1-inch black tattoo, I was in and out of the office in under 20 minutes, including paperwork and consultation time. Couldn't have been easier, and my tattoo is already obviously fading after the first session. As a price reference: my tattoo was priced at $125 per session (there's a $25 off first appt coupon on her website), and she estimated that it takes an average of 7 sessions to fully erase a tattoo -- though she was very clear that sometimes it takes more, sometimes it takes fewer sessions. I suspect it will be more like 3-4 sessions to get to the point where I'm satisfied, but we'll see. They do take credit cards. For tattoo removal, this is very reasonably priced, and I found the whole experience almost absurdly convenient. Definitely recommend. read more

She's super friendly and has a wonderful demeanor/energy that makes me feel very comfortable going in for my sessions. She's thoughtful about the amount of pain one is in and is responsive to not pushing too hard if it seems to be too much. Carol used to do laser tattoo removal which was good. Black is all gone. Now Genevieve her assistant removes tattoos but is inexperienced. I still had some other colors left and Genevieve lasered it which left hyper pigmentation, dark bruising still there for 2 months making my tattoo look darker and red blood spots still there after 2 months. Also, Genevieve looks nervous which doesn't leave me any confidence about her skills bc she had to text carol my tattoo to ask which setting on the machine for my tattoo. I will never come back after the damage to my skin. I am going to pay more at a real doctors office instead. Do not go for color removal. Only black ink removal. read more

I have been a client of Smooth Laser for over a year and absolutely recommend Carol. I first met Carol during a tattoo removal consultation. I have two tattoos that I wanted removed, both have color and one is very large. During the consultation Carol took the time to explain to me that due to several factors including the age and heavy use of specific colors in the tattoos, I would not get good results. Basically she refused to do the removals, which I estimate would have cost me several thousand dollars, which I was willing to pay. By comparison, I had also called one of the much raved about "NYC Tattoo Doctors" and was told by a rude receptionist that it would cost me over $350 just for a consultation. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had gone there. I immediately liked Carol and appreciated her honesty so I opted to have laser hair removal. Our sessions have been very positive. She is gentle and patient, regularly checking in on my comfort level. If I need a break, she stops right away. Most importantly, I've been absolutely thrilled with the results. Just a couple other things... Carol understands that many people want to remove tattoos for emotional reasons. So if you have a tattoo that has a negative meaning or makes you feel bad about yourself or past decisions, you will find a caring and compassionate person in Carol. Also, during one visit, I was very tan and Carol refused to use the laser because it would burn me. In a city where most people will do anything for a dollar, Carol is a refreshing change. I highly recommend Carol. One main reason is because she's nice and doesn't make you feel stupid for getting these tattoos that you obviously want off your body now. I have a couple of mistakes including my ex's name, and she did not ever, not once even for a nano second make me feel dumb about it. She was just like, "We all make mistakes" and she even told me some of her huge mistakes that she made in her past. She even made me laugh a little while lasering, because she actually said, "Goodbye Philip, goodbye!!!" while blasting his name off. I only wish I had the funds to go back every few weeks.
