This morning I went to Smokey Row and it was absolutely packed, so I left. I went across the street to another cafe and ordered the worst matcha latte I've ever had, which made me decide to give Smokey Row another chance. Luckily, there was a spot open when I went back! I ordered an energy drink and a lemon poppyseed muffin and was very impressed. The barista was an absolute angel--I wish I had gotten her name! She gave me the WiFi password, there were plenty of outlets, and everyone there seemed genuinely happy to be there. I got a lot of work done and was so grateful I gave Smokey Row a second chance! read more

Looking forward to their Cheeseburger chowder in a bread bowl and was disappointed in how running the chowder was and looked for the burger...? Service for soup ok however service for an iced Americano was slow. Usual vibe in the place so believe with much more competition in town this place needs to step up their game. read more

I traveled to Pella, IA for a volleyball tournament and discovered this gem as I searched for a good coffee shop. Smokey Row had a great atmosphere and wonderful staff. It was a bit busy with all the volleyball players and fans, but the staff pushed through the rush and did it with smiles. I ordered a Sweet Georgia Brown Mocha and it was delicious! It was sweet enough to tame the coffee taste for those of us that like that, and the hint of honey was amazing. With good coffee and a great ambiance outside and inside, Smokey Row Coffee makes for a great pit stop if you're going through or staying in Pella. They also have some great merch for purchase if you want a souvenir. read more

PLEASE READ Over all, Smokey Row is not bad. The coffee and beverages are decent, however it is the staff that made my experience unpleasant. I was enjoying my latte sitting up in the loft. I was unaware that there was an age restriction of 18 plus in the loft, which I will admit was a mistake on my behalf. However, this does not excuse the behavior demonstrated by the employee. While I was peacefully sipping on coffee and having a conversation with my group, an employee suddenly came pounding up the stairs. We were all confused and disturbed by this dramatic appearance, when she abruptly approached my table. She immediately questioned if we were 18, and before I could apologize for not knowing the rules, she angrily told us to leave the establishment. She began storming around table to table rudely questioning for ID and proof that everyone was over 18. It would have been appropriate for her to kindly explain herself and tell people that the area was off limits to people under 18. Instead she was rude and kicked people out for not knowing the rule. I needed to get some WiFi while on the road. Came in here for a cup of coffee and connection to the internet. Coffee was really good. Internet speed was good, especially with so many people here. I really do LOVE the coffee here I get it every time I come home!! BUT when I came to sit and study it was not what I expected. I went in two days a Thursday and a Friday. Thursday they were a little busy but a lot of tables were dirty. I was going to let it go. BUT then I came in on Friday and I had to ask them for a rag and spray to clean the table I wanted to sit at. There were multiple other tables dirty. (When I say dirty I don't mean with dishes. Really cute spot right on the corner. It has outdoor seating and indoor and two levels inside for seating. Girl taking my order was very sweet and gave great recommendations. I wouldn't have gotten the coffee muffin because those always seem dry to me. But this was noise and dense and perfectly made. We waited almost 40 minutes and the drinks never came. I went up and asked them what's going on. And they said we're very stressed right now. And we're not getting things out. There's basically 4 people in the whole place... I've been coming here for 10 years. It used to be the best place in Pella for good food, ice cream and milkshakes. Now it's gone so far down Hill that it's empty and the service is really, really, really poor and the excuses that they give you are even worse. From Des Moines it was a shock to realize there was more than one location. Excited that the menu was the same because I craved their cheeseburger chowder. I got myself a cup, because my mom ordered the taco salad. When she ordered it and asked got chicken instead of beef. The girl behind the counter said it wouldn't taste like a taco, but switched it up. The food came out in good time. I had no problem getting through my chowder and helping her with the salad. It was a big helping. It tasted great and we enjoyed it. I do enjoy this coffee shop. They got a little bit of everything and I recommend them. read more

In town for work and stopped in for some coffee and breakfast while catching up with coworkers. The Main Street in this town is so cute and trendy. Lots of seating options with spaces for 2-8 people. Order at the counter and don't forget to grab a bag of beans to go. My fave is the Creme Brûlée and Blueberry. Can get busy and crowded so order to go and find a park bench across the street at the park. The new fall menu is amazing! First time in Pella, stopped at Smokey Row for lunch since it looked like a cute cafe right in the heart of Pella. Husband and I both ordered paninis - his chicken and mine turkey. The cashier said they came with kettle chips so we didn't order any additional sides. The cafe was pretty busy during the lunch hour but we managed to find an open booth, just had to wait a minute for it to be cleaned off. Our food didn't take too long, but the first thing we noticed was that we received chips & salsa instead of kettle chips. Our guess is they ran out of kettle chips and substituted? Not sure, and we would've preferred the kettle chips since those pair better with comfort lunch food. Husband had to look at the menu again to confirm he received the right thing - menu listed strips of chicken and instead he got a chicken breast that tasted processed. My turkey panini was ok, wouldn't order again but it was ok. We think this cafe is better known for their wide coffee selection and all-day breakfast menu. We wish we would have tried those instead - given how busy it was in there that must be the key! read more

Love love love this place! Came to Pella for the first time and found this gem. The staff was so nice and the inside is a dream. It has an old factory feel with a splash of farm kitsch. Pretty disappointing place based on the first impression. It was Labor Day, maybe they were short staffed. First impression was fear of food poisoning. When I walked inside, there were about 5 booths and 1 large table all filled with left over used plates, food and beverages from the previous customers with no sign of anyone in the staff wanting to clean up the mess. There was lots of horribly miserable emo music that just added to the misery of the vibe inside. Despite this, we had no choice but to eat here as it was pretty much the only place open in Pella on Labor Day. Despite the inauspicious first impression, the food was ok and the service was fine. Also, that ugly mess of dirty dishes suddenly disappeared but my lasting memory of this place is an establishment with 80% of the tables inside unoccupied but filled with dirty dishes. I had the breakfast bagel which was good. The Americano here was excellent. The soups were weird: melted cheeseburger chowder?? It was greasy, oily, buttery yuckiality. The other soup option Tortilla Lasagne Soup sounded equally gross to me. If you are in Pella in a Dystopian-esque day, like Labor Day, when everything is close, this place will barely get the job done. I give this place 2.75 stars and will round it up to 3 only because the service was barely reliable. read more

I just stopped by for lunch and didn't know that they had lunch. Three years ago when I lived in the DSM area, I only visited the DSM location and just had coffee or ice cream. Well, I got the pick 2 from their menu. I substituted the croissant with wheat bread for their smoked turkey and chicken wild rice soup. I really liked the wild rice soup which was hot and just the right cream/texture. The sandwich was really good considering the smoked turkey wasn't just your standard lunch meat slice. It really tasted like it was fresh from the deli. Also, there was a generous side of kettle potato chips. Overall, this hits the spot and also can be your go to place to study and meet up with friends like the DSM location. Stopped in tonight for ice cream. 3 girls were working behind the counter. There were 2 people ahead of us getting coffee. We had never been there before so we did not know how to order. As we were standing by the ice cream, we were completely ignored by all 3 working. As they finished up with the customers in front of us, they continued to have a conversation with a friend of theirs who was sitting at the counter. Completely ignoring us as they continued to complain about how short staff they were. We were the only ones waiting to be served. Finally, after asking how we were to order our ice cream did one of them finally turned around to address us. We place the order. While we waiting the continted to have a conversation with their friend. Took over 30 mins to get our order filled, which was 3 ice cream dishes. As they finally gave us our order, I politely thanked them and got nothing but an eye roll. Ice cream was great but the worst service. We were amazed to find such a great spot in Pella! Nothing against Pella, but you don't expect to find unique, comfortable cafes with great food, great atmosphere, ice cream. etc., in a small town in Iowa, right? We were in town for a wedding, hoping to find a good spot to get some lunch and relax for a bit and Smokey Row was terrific. The paninis were terrific, as was the cheeseburger chowder. We had breakfast here the next morning as well. Good coffee. Nice selection of muffins and scones. The one bummer was that you have to order at the counter - as you do in most coffee shops. But Smokey Row isn't "most coffee shops." The line was out the door. Probably a 15 minute wait to place your order. Smokey's might need to decide to bring on a wait staff if their food is good enough (and it is) that they're basically a full-fledged restaurant. read more

Cute corner cafe in the heart of Pella's downtown. Unique setup, there's an upstairs section that you could easily overlook. Love the bar stools at the cafe and the diner-like booths. The baristas were very nice and one of them even brought me my latte as I was chatting with colleagues in a booth. I don't believe there's a Starbucks in Pella and in this case, it's a great thing.
