This place is Disney for the Dutch. I seriously got the same high walking through these doors as I do on vacation. I honestly expected to be somewhat disappointed because I'd be comparing the goodies I was buying to my grandma's homemade recipes. Now I travel an hour detour on my trips to and from Chicago just to stop here. The pastries here are so ridiculously good I cannot comprehend how they are always fresh and produce the volume they do. It is nearly always busy but completely worth the wait. Some staples I favor are the almond horns, letters, banket, coffee cakes (!!), and raisin buns. Not sure why everyone is obsessed with this place. We'll I guess it's because they have a massive selection. We ordered a few pastries including the famous letter but I was very disappointed. I was expecting more. The pastries were not flaky at all. The only thing worth while was the apple koek. My mom saw a few flies in the display cases and she was turned off by them. They lacked customer service skills. They weren't rude but they weren't friendly either. They seemed annoyed mostly. We told our family how much we loved it so now they buy us pastries from there as gifts since they ship. I'm including a picture of the packaging to show how great of a job they do with ensuring the delicate items arrive intact all the way to Southern California. I've made two trips to this wonderful bakery in two days. This is not good for my diet, but the reviews were so positive and the locals speak highly of their baked goods. Really fun little shop with great Dutch charm located right across the street from the Tulip Toren. The sweets are good, especially the cookies, and the staff is always nice. I went to Pella for the weekend for a visit and this was one of the first places I was brought to--and I am so thankful for this! The food and variety was AMAZING. The staff was friendly despite sometimes being very busy. I also love all the Pella trinkets and other items they have for sale besides just baked goods. Just had to come on here and give this place a raving review. I'm from Knoxville and every time one of my family members visit, they bring back the Dutch letters & a whole lot of donuts. I've been coming here since I was little and it's awesome how far their business has come!! This is probably one of the most special places for me, and I always get excited walking around Pella & smelling the amazing aroma of Jaarsma's. I usually order things for pick-up a day ahead (they often will not allow it same day), rather than standing in line while other customers gawk at the baked goods through the long glass cabinets. My order is pre-packaged and ready to go! But if you are unfamiliar with the baked goods, take the time to familiarize yourself with the offerings before you are next in line if you can. It is a popular and busy place year 'round, but especially so on weekends, near holidays, and practically impossible at Tulip Time. The help is efficient, the baked goods delicious. I have always wanted to stop in for baked goods, but I am usually only in town during the Tulip festival and the line is ridiculous. We stopped in at 11 am on a random Friday morning and there was still a line, so this place must be good!! There are plenty of people working here to keep the line moving at a good pace, and they all seem friendly and helpful. Initially we only went in for dutch letters, but everything looked so good, we also ended up getting blueberry cream puffs, almond macaroons, white chocolate covered pretzels, almond stuffed cookies, and some other almond pastry that I forgot the name. They have such a large selection of baked goods that it made it hard to decide. What can I say about this bakery that a lot of Central Iowa natives do not know? This place has always been my go-to place (and every body else I know) to get Dutch Letters. The flaky, almondy goodness is just so oooh my goodness tasty! I grew up getting these Dutch letters rather infrequently but would always see them at an event or gathering and would always grab one. Every time I ate one, it just brings back memories to when I was younger. I didn't even know that the bakery was in Pella until I was in high school. They are serially worth the trip alone. The rest of the bakery is cute and has so many varieties to choose from when it comes to baked goods. We tried a few of their other goodies, but I just keep going back to the Dutch letters! yea it is larger than the Oskaloosa Iowa store as it should be! after all this is the bakery store!! lol! kinda hard to find parking at times. unless you want to walk across the street. but worth the effort!! lots of choices for sure. the big thing for me is the cherry doughnut holes. yea if you have yet to try them... well you have just missed out!! What a wonderful gem for Pella. I've been here a couple times now: once during the tulip festival (the line is worth the wait. I mean, Dutch letters? Totally worth it.) and I stopped by because it didn't take me any longer to drive through Pella or take 80 to get home (the obvious choice was to take the Pella route for Dutch letters). I also enjoy the almond cookies (Andre something?); they have the Dutch letters' almond paste inside. They're like a mini pie and I love them. My husband loves the puff pastries (two pastries with a fluffy layer of frosting in between). And of course, we get a handful of Dutch letters. They have fantastic Dutch letters, and I don't like just anyone's Dutch letters. There are two places in Iowa where they're the best, and Jaarsma is one of them! The service was very friendly and I would 100% try this place again during our next visit. I talked to the owner about what happened and she said that it was there fault they put the wrong address on the package, but there was nothing she was going to do about it. We experienced Jaarsma months ago when I was in town for a job interview. The pastries were pretty great and I knew if I ever got the job that I might be in trouble. I got the job and have been successfully avoiding the town square while getting ready to move my family out this way. That is, until today. They have really gone downhill. Almost everything we bought was stale and dry. Almond cake was so dry it was hard to swallow and outer 1" was not edible. Almond tarts which have always been moist and wonderful were old also. Sugar cookies hard with flavorless frosting. The one plus side was the Dutch letters which were fresh and delicious. My first time visiting the town of Pella so of course I had to check out this highly rated bakery and their Danish Letters pastry. Reviewer Jason R. said it best when he described them as "flakey, crisp, layered, buttery, almondy, sweet, ". They would go perfect with a cup of coffee or a cold glass of milk. I also tried an individual strawberry cream cheese danish. It was one of those experiences where as soon as I bit into it, I said 'Oh, my gosh, this is sooooo good'.
