I was looking for a local coffee shop in the Fitchburg area and decided on Smokestack because they have a lot of good reviews. Unfortunately the food and drink didn't quite live up to my expectations. I ordered a cortado and a slice of carrot chai tea bread. The cortado had an unpleasant bitter aftertaste, like the espresso beans were overroasted. I did not realize the bread was gluten-free until I took a bite. The texture was good between the softness of the bread and the crunch of the pumpkin seeds, but didn't have the chai flavor I hoped for. I was asked if I wanted the bread warmed up and buttered so I said yes, not realizing the butter was an extra 75 cents until I checked my receipt. Feels like a bit much for a slice of bread that's already $6.75 (more than my cortado which was $4.50). On the more positive side, the shop is large and spacious with plenty of tables and chairs. There's a play area for children which is pretty cool if you have little ones with you. The ambiance is pretty unique since this is a repurposed garage. They seem very community-oriented with the event posting board at the entrance and the other local products for sale near the register. I would be willing to give this place another try should I be in the area again. I would just order a different drink and food. read more

I absolutely fucking love finding places that exist within spaces you'd never expect. In fact, I started a Facebook group called Hole In The Wall: New England to help people venture to places that are a bit hidden away, or off the beaten trace. Hence, one of my latest discoveries: a coffee shop set up in a literal garage, next to a Safelite. This is a perfect place to host events, including live music. The space is huge. When you walk in, there is an outer lobby area filled with comfy chairs to sit and relax while sipping your coffee. Walking in, there are various areas to sit and socialize spread out into this industrial space, which still retains a certain coziness despite the size and high ceilings. You can definitely engage in the most inappropriate conversations here without being heard by other parties, which scores high marks in my book. I wish I had taken pictures, but I left my phone in the car. They have a variety of gluten-free desserts (and regular, as well) and I have never seen blueberry muffins that were more photogenic. They were MASSIVE, and loaded with tons of berries. They looked like something straight from a magazine. They also had cheesecake, red velvet cake, cupcakes, and other assorted treats. I ordered a black coffee, and one of the best cupcakes I've had in a while. It tasted like it came fresh out of the oven, and was incredibly moist. The coffee I picked was super strong. It was a medium roast, but reminded me more of a dark French roast. I'm used to drinking light roasts, though, so I think that it was just a little too strong and dark for me. This is hands down my favorite coffee shop in town. I come here regularly with my kids, and we've always felt completely welcome. The staff has never said a word to us -- because my kids understand how to behave in a shared space. It's a calm, cozy spot where people come to relax, work, or catch up with friends, and the respectful atmosphere is part of what makes it so special. The coffee is excellent -- rich, smooth, and clearly made with care. The treats are just as good (don't sleep on the pastries -- they're amazing), and the baristas are consistently kind, friendly, and patient, even during busy rushes. You can tell they really care about the people they serve. The owners are not only cool, creative, and hardworking -- they're also incredibly generous to the community. They support local events, donate to causes, and make this shop feel like a true neighborhood gathering place. It's a gem of a place run by people who genuinely care. On Mother's Day we chose to come here so that I my kids could play while I treated myself to a hot cup of coffee. My 2 year old was being loud so my husband went over to her to talk get her to play quietly. As this was happening one of the workers came over and told us to "get them to be quiet because they were being annoying" and walked away even though we were in the middle of handling it. There was another couple there witnessing it who agreed and said that the encounter was so rude. When we talked to her about the way she handled the situation she was defensive and started to give us parenting advice. I'm mostly disappointed that I had started telling my friends with kids that this was a great spot and we should start meeting up here, now I have to go back and tell them that kids are actually not welcome here unless they are quiet kind. read more

This place is a gem! The employees are so helpful, and friendly. They have the best pastries too.

The coffee and vibe are excellent. We went out of our way to try given reviews and weren't disappointed. The staff is very friendly and despite a very open arrangement we felt very comfortable. They have an awesome looking arrangement of pastries that are very much homemade. The two we tried were a little dry but that could have been the luck of the draw. We would definitely go again. It's not cheap but we did get a pound of beans to go. read more

Some coffee houses offer delicious coffee but lack good service, food or ambiance. Fortunately Smokestack Roasters excels in all these categories. The food and baked goods are freshly made on the premises. As the space is a former car dealership, the cafe is roomy with generous seating at booths and large tables. The service is attentive and helpful. The staff will even bring a heavy tray to your table if you ask. Best of all, the space has a neighbourhood feeling as there is a lending library, a community notice board and local events are hosted here. Highest recommendation. read more

I would surmise that the kids were being very loud and the staff was trying to make sure that ALL customers could enjoy their time at Smokestack . If I could give zero stars I would. We've been to this place several times and really enjoyed it. We even supported them while the pandemic was starting by ordering a ton of beans. But we will never go back because of how we were treated here - and if you have kids, you shouldn't, either. The cafe has a whole corner of toys out - great for kids, right? Totally family-friendly, you would think. But when my child got a bit upset with another kid taking a toy - crying on and off for a few minutes but then playing again (before the owner replies here too - she was NOT screaming constantly, and we were NOT holding her down) - we were asked to leave by the owner in a very rude tone. She didn't ask us if she could help us or if anything was wrong - she just told us to leave. When I brought the tray back and mentioned that I was disappointed to be asked to leave for making noise in a place that has toys out for children, I was told that I should just take my kids to Dunkin instead. She basically said "buh-bye, you're not welcome" and told me again to leave. I feel like if you have toys out, and you can buy the kids drinks (babyccino anyone?), you should be more supportive of families when their kids aren't perfectly quiet. We spent over $40 on coffee + snacks, and each of the kids had a milk and a cookie - we didn't just buy one drink and park our kids there to play loudly. We have never been asked to leave somewhere ever - we were taking care of their toys and trying to make sure that our children were playing respectfully. What could have been a nice experience was absolutely awful, and it comes down to how we were treated - by the owner, no less. Edit - After posting reviews on Google, I then was attacked by the owner on that page, saying that my child was screaming nonstop. Her tone was ridiculously unprofessional, which is apparently just representative of her and her business. We've had wonderful experiences at Central Cup, Coffeelands, and Strong Style, all nearby - I would recommend that families with children go either of those places. Don't make the mistake of thinking this place is family-friendly - or even friendly, for that matter. read more

WOW!!! Only went here by accident, literally (my car was at Safelite for glass repair) and I love coffee! BIG dining room (I think it was a garage at one point or a car dealership) and they didn't make you wear a mask (a big plus for me as I'm tripled vaccinated and so done with COVID). Anyways I was able to sit and drink my coffee and enjoy my blueberry muffin on a nice booth while checking in at work! The dining room was unique, large and spacious, and modern, etc. The blueberry muffin was served on a fancy plate and coffee in a mug. The blueberry muffin was warm and seriously one of the best i've ever had! The coffee was delicious! I got the medium blend which was not as strong as Starbucks and a little bit stronger than Dunks. Oh very good! Staff was friendly (NOTE: they wore masks). Overall A++ i'd go back for sure if i lived in the area! 4 Stars because I like the place. Visited on 10/12, I had an Americano, my wife had some dark roast house coffee. I enjoyed mine , it was good. The house coffee not so much, bitter. Great food options. The bar for fixing up your coffee needs improvement, there was no sweetener option except white sugar and no milk options, easy fixes. We will be back. Wow! This place always looks busy and we hard people, so we only just stopped by. 1. There is a reason it is always busy 2. It's huge and service is quick, so lots of other customers isn't an issue! The line was super short and moved fast and there is tons of room to spread out! The baked goods are out of this world! The coffee is also fantastic! What a great addition to the community! There is also a great space for smaller kids with toys and books. And lots of smaller sitting areas to meet, socialize, or do some work! I cannot wait to be back and plan to come hungry! read more

Excellent coffee! I was a little put off that I asked for the cappuccino to stay and they served it in a paper cup.

Great space, staff are amazing to customers, the music is perfect and there is a large lending library. Local art from area artists adorns the walls and the selection of furniture gives a homey vibe. Coffee is amazing and roasted onsite. I look forward to whenever I can visit this spot. read more

If you haven't been here for coffee..... stop your dunks run and run right on in here. The coffee is AMAZING. The atmosphere is so inviting. Large couches and chairs that invite you to buy a coffee and settle in with a good book. My son loves the lemonade and we love to try whatever desserts they have available. I usually get the cold brew. DELICIOUS!!! They also have muffins available and some other breakfast items. The staff are LOVELY and make you want to come back and see them again. read more

Tried both caffeinated and decaffeinated and both were extremely bitter and acidic. Enough that it cuts through a sweet latte's milk and syrup. There are a multitude of reasons why it can get so bitter, but you go to a shop so you get something done well. Also they have a "you do you" mask policy which as we all know isn't a public health method that works, and none of them were wearing them anyways. We won't be back for a long time, perhaps they will have sorted out their espresso problems. I'd keep driving and go to to Strong Style coffee instead. read more
