    The amazing specialty fries choices.
    Alice H.

This place has the perfect food for when you're craving salty junk food :) I love the choices for the specialty fries - my favorites being triple pork & hogtown. The fries are a bit over-priced, but there are a LOT of fries. You're probably going to feel amazingly disgusting afterwards. Even though the quality of the poutine isn't the very best, I'm giving it 4 stars because it's just soo satisfying to eat sometimes. The service is fast and the hours are great, it's open super late.

Finally open: A Waterloo location of the poutine restaurant empire that is sweeping across the nation to call our own. That would be Smoke's Poutinerie. I was there on opening day and back again to scope it out some more! For those not in the know: What Is Poutine? Well, the classic French-Canadian dish has fries, topped with gravy and cheese curds. This Traditional poutine is available here at Smoke's for purists, but the chain's claim to fame is giving poutine the rock-star treatment by variations to the standard poutine with a number of delicious toppings that take the dish from merely stratospheric to out-of-this-world. As an example, take my favourite option: The Country Style poutine which piles on chicken, bacon, mushrooms & caramelized onions as tasty toppings on the fresh-cut fries from Smoke's own potatoes and specialty gravy. First it's salty and there's the squeaky cheese curds, then you get the smokiness from the bacon, then again you get a hit of sweetness from the caramelized onions. In the end you have bite-after bite of poutine goodness. Not a sit down place, the take-out service here was fast and friendly, with a bit of a wait each time... even though it has just recently started, this location already has a lot of fans!

    Double Pork Poutine
    Jon T.

I ordered the "Wow" size double pork poutine. I'm not doing that again. The poutine was kinda good at the beginning. Nice meaty flavours, bacon, pulled pork, fries, gravy overload. Then it kinda slowed down to giant bites of fries and copious gravy. Then I saw I ate about half of the poutine. Only then did I realize I paid more than $14 for a giant tub of poutine with pulled pork and bacon. The poutine was ok, but I definitely ordered a too large of a size poutine. I'm not exactly if one person can finish a "Wow" sized poutine, and I wouldn't recommend trying. The fries are kinda substandard frozen tasting, and the rest is regular poutine. It's also fairly expensive, so might wanna just steer clear and find a more "professional" meal than poutine for a meal.

    Philly cheesesteak poutine

Hearing generally good things about Smoke's Poutinerie and their special kinds of poutine, we decided to try it out. This location is tucked at the very end of the Chatime plaza and it's quite small - there's only a few stools if you want to sit in to eat. We ordered a medium philly cheesesteak poutine which came about to a little over $11. After ordering, our poutine was ready in only a couple minutes. Inside our box, there were mushrooms, red peppers, steak, and fries. The steak was sliced thin like roasted beef, and it was all covered in cheese whiz. I haven't had philly cheesesteak before, so I can't attest to whether it tasted like an actual philly cheesesteak! I found that the fries were kinda mushy and soggy at the bottom though. Overall, not a huge fan, as I felt like there could've been more flavour and texture. Maybe I just got unlucky and didn't pick one of their good poutines lol. I'll probably end up hitting up Smoke's again to try the other poutines (maybe after a night out?!)

    Bacon and chicken poutine

Nothing special, the food is too complex to taste good. They need basic poutine toppings like chili, onions, tomatoes, this doesn't taste good. Too much going on.

Delicious and good service at 4:30, and a lovely 80s ambiance, I would personally recommend the avalanche poutine.

Not as good as the one downtown Toronto. I feel that the fries are overcooked or dry half of the time. Lacks consistency.

The interior is very cute here - the menu is handwritten on a chalkboard and they have stuffed animals on sale at the side. We came here at around 30 minutes before closing time so unfortunately we were only able to get takeout. There was plenty of available seating though and the restaurant was clean and tidy. We decided to order the cold noodles (liang pi) and the yo po noodles which came up to a total of $16. You get to play rock paper scissors with the cashier, and if you win you get 5% off your order. Portions were huge for the price and the food smelled so good! The noodles itself were quite chewy and carried the sauce well. I think both dishes were a tad too oily though, and it also tasted more sour than spicy. I probably won't order these dishes again, but I noticed they serve other interesting dishes on their menu like peking duck pork wraps and pork patties - I might just give it another try when I'm in the area!

Convenient place for a hot and spicy lunch/dinner. Price is slightly more expensive but they also give large portions. Would recommend the standard meal combos over custom orders due to difference in price. Their 麻辣烫(malatang)are a staple, but the pickled cabbage fish casserole left a better impression on me. Though that might be because I had their malatang too many times aha Overall a homey meal, but personally find it a tad expensive for something I could make at home. Would recommend for cold winter nights.

Let's start with the good. Huuuuge Boa's! Easily the biggest I've ever seen. The bun is as good as they come, pillowy soft, yet strong enough to hold all of the ingredients that make up these massive sandwiches. Now as far as the food itself, well, disappointing to say the least. I tried the chicken katsu, crackle belly, and Seoul beef. All were technically flawed in various ways. The chicken katsu was the more enjoyable of the bunch, great on breading and flavor, but the chicken itself was tough and on dry side. The amount of beef in the Seoul beef is beyond generous, and actually tasty. But the kimchi does absolutely nothing to add to this. As far as the crackle belly? My oh my. Pork belly is my thing. I've had more than I could count. None as bad as this. The name crackle implies crispy. This cut of pork was so tough and overcooked with little to no fat, that i started to question if it was even ever from the belly itself. Surely this could not be the norm at boa sandwich bar. Maybe a bad day at the office? I would certainly hope so, because even with mild expectations, Bao sandwich bar falls waaaay short.

The decor seems to be going for a "bathroom chic" as described by my friend -- "4 stars - delicious food, feels like I'm in a bathroom"! Lol. It's mainly because of the tiles on the wall and the uncomfortable seats. Food: The BOGO special only allowed us to order from their special bowls so we tried the Big Umami (salmon + tuna) and the one with the Duck. Quantity wise the bowl seems to be good value given that it normally costs $15 per bowl. They put a generous amount of toppings on top of the rice and the flavour was good and the fish sashimi was quite fresh. Definitely no watery/soggy texture! The food also looks damn good with lots of colours, which not only is super appetizing but also so Insta worthy!! Service: Basically fast food McDonald like ordering, no table service. When we were lining up they got someone to hand us the big cardboard menu and explained to us how the ordering works. However...they somehow managed to messed up the order.
