I only give this review a 2 because I save the 1's for places that I think have no heart or passion for what they do and treat their customers like crap. I believe this food truck does enjoy people and believes they are doing a good job. As a BBQ explorer I was kind of upset to see that they had no combo options. Apparently when they did do combo deals, people complained about the portion of the meats? I mean ... the price should be fair and the portion should be fair, simple as that, why stop it all together. I don't know what the prices were for what combo meal but I paid $14 for 1/4 rack and 1 small side ... I'm sorry, that is Awful! Compared to the collection of New England BBQ Joints I've been to, $14 for like 3-4 ribs and a small side of rice is terrible. Also $12 for a Brisket Sandwich with 1 small side? The only sides to choose from were Beans, Coleslaw, or Dirty Rice ... and Rice isn't even "Dirty".
Anyways. Ribs were thin, hard to cut into and not precut, a lot of red rub on it. And it fell off the bone way to easy, I couldn't eat it off the bone. Pork flavor was kinda there but not really, Rub flavor was like a sweet apple style, all the bones were cracked and broken. The price is already bad even if these were nice big juicy ribs.
Dirty Rice was ... weird in sort of a good way? I think it was Basmati rice with little pieces of juicy topical pork with a hint of a zesty spice. It's not what I would ever call "Dirty Rice" with the ground meat, yellow rice, nice south west spices and peppers and stuff. I'd change the name to tropical pork rice or something.
Beans had a good apple like smell to them. Pork and onions and some peppers. Onions were still crunchy so they weren't sitting in the pot for too long, I guess that can be a preference thing but every baked bean dish I have ever had with onion has Never been crunchy like they just threw it in the pot a minute ago. And most recipes I've seen Start with the onions before anything else so I don't know what's going on here. Pork was a little bit stringy for my taste, meaning it became just string, not pulled pieces. Flavor was typical though.
Wanted to try the Brisket too but I didn't want to pay the Brisket meal price. So I had to get the sandwich instead which was still $12. Chopped brisket now because it was a sandwich. And it tasted like pork ... I've had good and bad brisket and everything in between, I've never had brisket taste more like pork than beef. Had a weird mustardy peppercorn aftertaste to it too, just made it taste even more like pork. Very rubbery, lot of pepper rub flavor, honestly disappointing.
They have 2 sauces. Red and White. Red sauce they called "Tennessee" which in my experience usually means more heat (not all the time) and description said a "Light vinegar base" which is perfectly fine. But this was like a hot vinegar juice. And White was obviously Alabama style. This was probably the closest to what I imagine real Alabama White sauce is. Kind of like a tartar sauce with a very mild horseradish note to it, almost looks like a chipotle mayo but it's not. But unfortunately that was the only part of the meal I enjoyed, a little dab of white sauce. read more
