They don't offer rain checks here. Hit one tee shot and we didn't get our money back.

From the moment I got my first views of St. George's Golf and Country Club, it filled me with a…read morestate of heightened golf euphoria, A Golden Age golf gem that is a very sneaky difficult par 70 6400 yards. From the clubhouse, one can see across vast expanses of the golf course. Several hundred trees were removed during a restoration led by architect Gil Hanse, the same man designing the Rio Olympics course. The first three holes play on your golf emotions like a fine wine that needs a bit more time to breathe. You know that in a short period of time, this magnificent bottle will yield a complexity that may be the best you have ever experienced. The only way to know is to savor what you have in front of you, grinning a little inside knowing that something very special is about to be revealed. St. Georges may look short on the card, but don't be fooled. It's a par-70, which means it will play almost 400 yards longer than the distance stated. While none of the holes is unfairly long, the rough is thick and high, the greens speedy and true, and the terrain severely undulating. You not only have to keep the ball in play, you have to control distance as well as accuracy. With the greens well protected by mounds, deep bunkers and internal contour, the adventure doesn't end when you get greenside, but may in fact be only be beginning. Holes #1 through #4 tempted me to take shots I can pull off on flat courses but the risk here at St.Georges are so strategic! that you should easy back off the accelerator and attack the course at very few and far between points. Devereux Emmet made sure of this back in 1916 when he designed the course, with classic bunkering on both the fairways and greens. Rolling your approach shots can be your best route or your worst nightmare. At the driving range as I was warming up for the days round, I was approached by the golf pro Rod Heller and we struck up a conversation. We talked golf plane swings as we both fought a double cross hook for some stints of time. I peered over his shoulder to see my playing partners waiting for me, I had to excuse myself so we could begin the journey of our day out on the course. To be honest, I could have spent all day talking to Russ. What a sweetheart, complete gentleman and so available and willing to assist members with any needs, questions or comments they threw his way.

I also think the course is kept in reasonably good shape considering how much play it gets. That said I cannot recommend to is course because it is, frankly, horribly run. They put off groups every 9 minutes and the backups on some holes extend to 2, 3 or even 4 groups. The rangers do nothing to promote pace of play. I would easily pay 50% more to have groups go off every 12 or 15 minutes. It's abundantly clear that the staff has absolutely no regard for pace of play. I understand that they have to make money, but the course is so inexpensive that they could easily charge a premium to put out fewer groups. Additionally, on one Saturday I ended up waiting on the fifth hole for 45 minutes while a group of the club's members did a shootout on the green. They did not let us play through, and in fact cursed me out when I told them they were holding us up. It added well over an hour to what was already a five hour round when you count the delays on previous holes. Mind you this was on a Saturday at noon, which is a pretty high volume time to stage such a tournament. The staff was entirely unsympathetic to our complaints. Another time, the back nine was entirely clear and they were four groups on the fourth tee. My group decided to play the completely open back nine and we were sternly yelled at by the staff and thrown off the course. I would absolutely not recommend that anyone play here, which is a shame, because the course is actually lovely.

Fortunately, they had a late afternoon opening that we manage to finish prior to the sky's opening up on us. The course has 27 holes that may be played as either 9 or 18 holes. Surprisingly, I was unfamiliar with the gold course and did not realize that the first two courses were built in 1962 and soon after they constructed the other nine hole Blue Course in 1964. The designer of all three courses is Alfred Tull, same designer as the Blue & Yellow at Bethpage State Park. The golf course was somewhat hilly and surrounded by mature woodlands that were partially comprised from a recent tropical storm. Overall the course was in average public course shape with damage trees in many areas. I found the greens slow and sometimes unpredictable on their speed. There were plenty of ball marks on the greens unfortunately from players without golf etiquette which in some cases common at Public Golf Courses. Regardless, we enjoyed our game.

It's honestly shocking they charge people money to play there. I've seen better conditions at random municipal courses that cost half the price. The worst part, though, was one of the older workers there who was unbelievably disrespectful and miserable. The guy was a complete asshole for no reason at all, talking to paying customers with attitude like we were inconveniencing him by existing. If you hate people that much, maybe don't work at a golf course. There's no excuse for treating customers the way he did. Between the garbage course conditions and employees acting like bitter angry clowns, the entire experience was pathetic. Sunken Meadow should be embarrassed to call itself a golf course when the place is run this badly. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless they enjoy wasting money and getting treated like garbage.

The terf we hit off with anything short of driver was nothing short of impeccable Kentucky blue grass. Vibe was 10 out of 10 and great quality for the $80/hr price tag. Service was annoying. We arrived five minutes late to our tee time, but our bay was not ready when we got there. It was actually dirty and they had to clean it - flag on the play; delay of game. Besides that, we told the server that we didn't need anything. They proceeded to ask us 8 more times. It's like c'mon! They even called us boring. Wildly offended by that. Then, there was an additional 2 professional delay of games when our bay stopped working. When we finally left, they then tried to pull a fast one and add more time to our already expensive bill. Overall, highly recommend coming here! Loved this place much! However, my award is 4-stars, not 5. Scrap all the staff, except the pro and the tech guy.
