First, about a 10-15 min detour from 95, free parking, cute little area with restaurants and a hiking trail. Restaurant is beautiful. Staff are efficient and friendly. Made great recs. Food is fairly priced and most importantly delicious! The owners are at the restaurant, the chef Ed, who's also from Philly! Came out to speak to us. His wife Yalem is beautiful and brought us to our table. We would highly recommend to anyone! I'm going to have to come back because they sold out of the peach crisp :(

They have a big space though there are also a lot of chairs and tables around. Food was good. The brisket was tender. Options for sides include mac & cheese, collard greens, string beans, broccoli, Spanish rice, potatoes au gratin, baked beans, coleslaw, fruit salad, corn bread, yams, french fries, etc. The coleslaw and baked beans were also good. For desserts, we enjoyed the bread pudding and peach cobbler. Would have given this place a 4/5 for food but service was really bad. Food took a long time to be served. This we understood because it was really a busy day. Because the cloth napkins smelled like rancid oil, we just asked for paper napkins. This took ~30 minutes before we got some. We also asked for some condiment. Since no one was checking on our table, we had to stand up and approach one of the staff to follow up on this, not once but twice but some vinegar never came. Though our server Gracie acknowledged and apologized for the bad service, service was still crappy and disappointing.

Whole Truth Lunchroom has a great mission, and the food definitely lived up to the experience…read more Everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. The fried chicken was crispy and fried hard just the way I like it, with plenty of flavor in every bite. The greens were seasoned perfectly, and the yams were sweet with a great texture--not too hard and not too soft. I visited on a hot summer day, and the restaurant can get pretty loud and a little stuffy when it's busy. Thankfully, they had fans placed throughout the space, which made it much more comfortable. Overall, I enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. If you're looking for good soul food and want to support a place with a meaningful mission, Whole Truth Lunchroom is worth a visit. I'd definitely go back.

Located a few…read moreblocks from downtown and run by dedicated volunteers, this is an old school cafeteria with the type of food you'd expect from Southern church ladies. Dishes vary from day to day but the fried chicken, baked chicken, and fried pork chops are staples. Plates come with two sides and you can see from the photo why the blackeyed peas are so good (spoiler alert - it's bacon, lots of bacon). Collards are also delicious and the yams are mildly sweet without being cloying. The banana pudding is gloriously warm and the meringue is fluffy. The pudding is a touch too sweet and I could have done with more bananas but it was large enough to share. The staff is genuinely happy to see you and are happy to talk about their work, if you like. The room is a bit bare bones and the bathrooms are rudimentary and cramped but everything works. There is parking directly in front of the restaurant. Thanksgiving take-out is available for pre-order (see photo). I have a strong feeling you won't go wrong with any of the choices.

I had takeout for 3 people and everything was prepared fresh. All orders combined we had shrimp, cheesesteak, wings, fried okra, potato salad and fries. The potato salad was like mama had made it. I was tempted by the desserts, but I resisted. There was a nice crowd at lunch time on a Tuesday ... I will definitely be back.

Parking is the biggest challenge and it is very limited. There are only a few spots in front of the diner and because the building is small the lot fills up quickly. I did see people parking near the neighboring convenience store but I was not sure about the rules there so I waited until a spot opened up. You may also need to look for street parking nearby if it is busy. Also do not block the side of the building because there is a drive through window. Once inside the atmosphere is welcoming and clean. There was a cute Christmas tree near the ordering area and the staff were warm friendly and attentive. The tables were very clean with checker style tablecloths. They also had a perfect health inspection score which stood out to me. For food I had the fried trout fried shrimp green beans and fries. Everything was very tasty and well seasoned. The only note is that the trout is not filleted so there were quite a few bones. A piece of white bread on the side would really help with that. My husband had the cheesesteak and fries and it was honestly one of the best cheesesteaks I have ever had. We shared plates and everything we tried was good no complaints. Drinks were also good. The cups are a bit small but refills are free so that balances it out. Since this is a diner and you are dining in they bring your food and beverages to your table. If you need a refill they will take care of it and bring it out to you. I would strongly recommend leaving a tip if you are paying with card or dropping some cash in the tip jar because they are hardworking and kind people. Overall I would give this place a 10 out of 10. It is a small quaint diner with great food great service and good energy. I will definitely be back and plan to try more items on the menu next time.

The sweet tea is southern pucker sweet & perfect!! There's malt vinegar on the table for collards, and the NC vinegar based BBQ sauce was very good. However, the chopped pork BBQ did t really need any help, it was just as good on its own and not mushy. I even enjoyed the yellow coleslaw, it's a mustard & vinegar base and tasty. The Brunswick stew could have been heat hotter, but it had a decent taste with plenty of meat & veggies. I would definitely drive out of my way again to share Parker's with my 15yr old who missed this road trip.
