Another place here in the countryside life here in southeastern GA that specializes in southern Fried Chicken. I was pretty impressed with the chicken. I ordered the 3 pc. Chicken dinner to go. They gave me 4 pieces of chicken instead of 3, I'll take that. The chicken was great. It was not heavy at all kind of like light to medium. Great balance. Not salty at all nor greasy. Smith's chicken used to be the best in town. Now that it's under new management it's not all that great and they're supposed to be open until 9:00 p.m. but they stop serving their logs and having orders available at 8:30. The service and the quality has just gone down. read more

The food may have been good, if you can give it a chance and get past all the nastiness of the place. Which I couldn't! Just be aware before you go! It's very old and run down, we were scared we'd get food poisoning to be honest! Dirty inside, ceiling tiles half falling down, and water damaged, smelled bad in there, etc. Kids had to use the restroom, and you had to go outside to get to it. My son went in the mens, and came out yelling about stuff in the floor. I looked, and the floor was standing in ......? A stinky liquid of some sort! SO beyond disgusting!!! We were driving through Hazlehurst and I really wanted to try good Southern fried chicken. We decided to go through the drive thru, the people taking the order were not overly friendly but not rude. The wait time was a little too long for fried chicken. The chicken itself was good, a little too salty for me, but very juicy, and the fries were delicious. I saw the buffet at Smiths a few months back when I stopped in for some fried chicken and decided that the next time I was down this way I would eat the buffet. Today I stopped in for the buffet and with my luck they only had tasteless baked chicken on the buffet. I ate on piece of this chewy chicken and started to eat the second. Best fried chicken joint in south GA! Moist, tender, crispy, and delicious. I think they pressure cook the chicken to lock in the flavor. The fried shrimp is really good if not in the mood for chicken. They have a Sunday lunch buffet and if you ask they will serve you fried chicken from the counter. Again this is one of the best fried chicken joints you will ever eat at. Atmosphere is nothing to brag about but not a dump either, bathrooms on the other hand are. Driving through on the way back to Atlanta from the coast. I am not a native of the south, so I always love finding the off-the-beaten path places with great food. This is one of those classic, almost nostalgic (maybe that just means "not updated in decades," but it's about the food!), simple eateries that focuses on fried chicken and other fried stuff. Seemed to be a very popular place with the locals, so that's always a good sign. The food itself: the chicken was just great (it had better be given it is the namesake of the restaurant). Would have preferred the option of more robust utensils, though I suppose you're just supposed to eat it with your hands! Note, this is basically non-chain fast food if you think about it, so I'm not giving it 4 stars in comparison to other higher end or full waiter service restaurants. Tip: plan ahead if you think you may need a restroom break, as this place's facilities are on the outside of the building. Trust me. I couldn't even fully close the mens room door.
