So pulled up into the car park, two degrees outside and 'are we human or are we dancer' coming out of the radio as I turned off the engine. First duty was into a nearby supermarket for a soft white bread pan. When it's fish n chips it has to be tea, bread and lots of butter. A good sprinkling of salt on the fish n chips too. Carbs, animal fats and hardly a healthy calorie in sight. So into the chip shop to a friendly welcome from a man, certainly didn't look like Paula but it's a funny old world so I thought better than to ask. Two fish and chips please (or as we used to say: two fish suppers) £11.60 was required. I checked it was cod and he almost seemed taken aback at my question - he said, 'of course'. I waited a bit pleased that the food was being cooked to order. The portions of cod were huge, with fresh, white chunky and skinless meat. If you aren't sure how fresh cod tastes try it here as it's very fresh. I thought each chip portion was a tad mean but once home and in the plate it was generous enough. The food is cooked in beef dripping. There is no substitute good enough, groundnut, peanut, rapeseed, olive, corn oils none come close. The batter was towards thin and I like that, and to be fair the food sat in a take out bag until I got home and put out the plates and do on. Despite this the food was excellent, perfectly good food and still quite warm. A chip buttie was a must. Now I've eaten some of the finest foods on earth but I gotta tell ya the taste of a white soft pan bread chip buttie with a bit of salt and a generous slap of butter is wonderful made all the better with hot tea. The glowing reviews are right, it's a great place. The next time I want very good fish & chips I know where to go. Maybe next time I'll sit in and have it at its very best. Who knows now that oil prices have fallen the prices here should drop too.

Im sure no one can blame me. When you walk into this little restaurant, you are walking up to a counter and ordering your dinner. They have 14 varieties of chips, priced from £2.20 (small chips)up to £4.60 (taco chips with bolognese and cheese). There are four varieties of fish (i got the fresh battered haddock at £3.60) and fries and gravy for £3.40). The fish and chips were delicious. The gravy was bland (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). I don't know if I could tell these apart except from the shape so I asked which was the most popular and was told cod. So I ordered the cod fish & chips and a side of mushy peas. I ordered at the counter and waited about 5 minutes for my number to be called then took the box outside to eat on the lawn near the water, keeping a careful watch on the aggressive seagulls. The portion was good, the fish was fresh like just off the boat, the batter light and mildly seasoned, and no disagreeable flavors from the frying oil. Unfortunately the batter was inconsistent: thin and crunchy in places, thicker and soggy in others. The fries were just ok, starchy. So overall only average. I had to try mushy peas again, just my second time. They tasted and looked just like they sound: mashed up green peas. No mint flavoring added this time. Fine for what they were, but I just don't get it. I think I prefer coleslaw with my fish&chips but I don't think it's offered here. Perhaps coleslaw is an American thing? So only average overall. But I'd consider returning if I wanted a quick takeout lunch as the other restaurants in the area were more formal sit-down places.
