Years ago, my dentist recommended this oral surgeon. I went for a consultation & all went well, establishing myself as a patient (or so I thought). Subsequently, I had a lower molar crack & when I called for an emergency appointment was told no, nothing available & was hung out to dry. I had to scramble & find a substitute surgeon on my own. I would strongly recommend going to Dr. Smith Williams when you need to extract wisdom teeth for the following reasons: 1. Anesthetics they used made me comfortable when getting my teeth extracted. I felt no pain or anxiety during the procedure at all. 2. The procedure was extremely fast. I had to get three wisdom teeth extracted, so I thought the procedure would take around at least 45 minutes. However, it only took Dr. Williams 20 minutes to complete the perfect procedure. 3. To preface I have severe anxiety when it comes to dental work. The last dentist I went to I panicked and left mid root canal. Dr. Smith Williams and her team put me at ease from the first appointment. Today they removed 3 teeth and before I even had the laughing gas the nurse cracked a joke and broke the tension. Dr Smith Williams was efficient and got me out of there quickly and as painlessly as possible. 6 hours later I wouldn't even know I had a procedure today. Can I give more than 5 stars? read more

I was completely freaking out about having my wisdom tooth removed but my experience was quite pleasant, very quick and painless. The recovery is going well, today is the second day since my wisdom tooth was removed and I have only needed to take the ibuprofen once and and I'm satisfied with my experience. So far, so good. Dr. Smith Williams is extremely passive aggressive, lacks compassion, and displays laziness. There was such a lack of communication that I had no idea what type of anesthesia I was receiving until right before my surgery. I had planned to get all four wisdom teeth out, and in the MIDDLE of my surgery asked my mother and I if we could just do two and schedule the rest for another time, which we refused. My father who was in the waiting room also told us that she had walked out and asked the receptionist to cancel her afternoon appointments because she "didn't feel like working past one". When I was nervous about my surgery, she did absolutely nothing to help calm me down, and in fact made it worse with passive aggressive comments, and said nothing to me when my surgery ended, just walked out of the room. I will not be returning to her for any future dental problems, and do not recommend her for future patients. read more

Everything about my experience with Dr. Smith Williams and the entire staff at her office was great. They were super helpful in getting me in right away, took great care of me when I was anxious about the surgery and even followed up afterwards to see if they could get me more coverage from insurance. I never had to wait long to be seen and was in and out quickly. The doctor is very efficient and again the whole staff was really great in making sure I was taken care of. Even though I just went in a few times for a single problem, it felt like I'd been going for years, the staff was so familiar and made me feel like a regular. I was referred to this office by my dentist over at Fenway Health (Dr. Singh). I called in and was given appointment options (some where a consult could happen and an appointment where I would be able to extract the tooth in the same visit). The receptionist who answered my call helped me figure out my insurance policy and different options I had. She promptly emailed me paper work as to cut down in the processing time and waiting time at the office. I think some people forget that one of the reasons why you have to wait in doctor's offices is that they have to run your insurance and do the paperwork, which takes awhile. I only waited 20 minutes from entering the office to when I was able to start my panoramic x-rays. Immediately following that, I was ushered into a well appointed room (when can you really say that about an oral surgery office). Music was playing, and it was music I actually liked. Train, Adele, Jack Johnson were just some of the artists going. It made me feel relaxed before having to get a wisdom tooth extracted. I had tooth 32 removed, so it's the one in the back. I was told a slight incision was to be made before removing the tooth and it could be easy or hard to remove, but it looked like it would come out. After some local anesthesia and a couple of minutes to let things work their numbing powers, the procedure began. I was only told I could feel pressure, which is what I felt. No pain, only the extraction of my tooth a couple minutes later and boom! DONE! The team worked well to get it out quickly and had me on my way. I will return in 3 weeks to make sure things are healing well. I had my procedure done at 12:30pm yesterday and it is currently 9:45am the next day, and I am not bleeding, I can eat soft food to medium solid food, and nothing hurts. I was prescribed some antibiotics to keep infection at bay and some pain killers, which aren't needed as much at this point because I woke up with no pain. Thank you for a wonderful experience. I have 2 more wisdom teeth that will eventually need extraction. I will bet that I will be back here to get those out later! Highly recommended, but note that you'll probably have to wait a little from when you sit in the office to when you actually have a procedure done. And note that you never know how long it will be because either complications arise or your tooth can be difficult to remove, which pushes back other people's appointments. read more

Getting your wisdom teeth out is one of those things you either did right before college like most normal people, or you procrastinated and now you're searching yelp for "no pain oral surgeon able to deal with scared-as-all-hell twenty-somethings". I fell into that latter category. My general dentist recommended that I check out Dr. Smith-Williams, a charming and super-cool oral surgeon on Boylston St (a street that could just as well be called Tooth Alley - there are SO MANY dentists in that area..). I came in for a consultation, she gave me the straight dope about my anesthetic options, and I scheduled an appointment for the following week. I had two lower impacted wizzies - both were out in 45 minutes (this has to be a new speed record), and while the pressure while removing the teeth was a little odd at times, it didn't hurt. I went with two valium + local anesthetic, and I thought it was perfectly fine. You barely even feel the local anesthetic being injected too, no pinch, nothing. I'm glad I was able to bring in my own music too - highly recommended. Post-recovery has been great, and three days later, no complications (yet). If you're considering taking the plunge, go with Dr. Smith-Williams. As a previous reviewer put it, shes DA BOMB. Possibly DOT COM. read more

Need those wisdom teeth out? This lady is top notch. I had been procrastinating the removal of my last two wisdom teeth for sometime. I was in and out in less than 45 minutes. Not a bit of swelling. A little gross, but VERY minimal bleeding as well. Not a single complication afterwards. I listed to my IPod while she worked her magic (with my eyes closed as well) and she literally had to tap my on the shoulder to say that she was done!!!! I would give Dr. Smith-Williams an excellent recommendation. She and her staff were professional and pleasant from the initial consultation to the follow up. Let me begin by saying Dr. Smith Williams is THE BEST. I found Dr. Smith Williams via Yelp. I had three impacted wisdom teeth and got one removed last winter through my dentist. It was a long, gruesome and painful experience and I have been dreading to get the remaining two out. I have been putting it off, but I finally dragged my butt into her office for an exam. She went over the sedative options with me very thoroughly and I set up an appointment for the extraction. I am writing this review not after an hour of my procedure and I feel completely fine. I was on local and laughing gas. The extraction happened so fast I had to ask if they were out. AMAZING!! I DREADED getting my wisdom teef out. DREAD. This woman dealt with my sobbing insanity through not one not two but THREE consultations spread out over the course of 2 years (kept putting it off). I got my ass in there and got my teeth taken out with the novacaine, laughing gas, and valium. I was not in pain during the procedure - my ipod on blast was a saving grace. I am still healing a month later and did endure some dry socket but her entire staff were always willing to help, follow up, and get me feeling good. Dr. Smith-Williams and her staff are wonderful. She did an extraction and an implant about a year ago. When it was discovered I needed another extraction and implants, I made my appointment to go to her again. I was extremely scared before the first extraction -- Dr. Smith-Williams came into the room and was so understanding -- she calmed me down and was very reassuring. For both extractions, I didn't even realize when the tooth had been pulled. I took Tylenol for pain management and was fine. I was given clear and thorough explanations of what was going to be doie and what to expect. Her staff is very welcoming, professional and supportive as well. Not enough words to describe how thankful and impressed I am by Dr. Salim Afshar!! I am relatively new to the Boston area and needed a tooth extraction due to an infection brewing in my upper molar. It is ALWAYS so difficult to find a physician when you need one because of all the hoops of needing referrals and such first. In any case, I was set for an appt with another oral surgeon a few weeks out and then proceeded to the airport for my flight to London. Well, my face felt hot and swollen. I had constant headaches and I was hesitant to continue on my trip to London. I got off the plane and started calling Boston oral surgeons. Dr. Afshar was the first one who called me back and he scheduled me in for the next open office day. I have some anxiety when it comes to dental appointments, but honestly, Dr. Afshar was superb and immediately helped relieve all my worries. It was originally planned that I take an anti-anxiety, novacane and laughing gas, but after they pulled the first tooth out (I got all 4 wisdom teeth out, two were impacted) I asked if they could stop with the laughing gas because I didn't like it (not their fault at all, I'm just really sensitive with some things and didn't like the feeling) & so it was just the novacane. I actually had my wisdom teeth out at this office in 2008. Dr. Williams was exceptional. I did not get conscious sedation for financial reasons, but they kept me extremely comfortable for the whole procedure. It turned out that the day of the extraction it was the celtics victory parade right outside the office doors. Realizing this was happening she did the procedure quickly so I'd be able to get out the door before it started. Just as many of the negative reviews mention, during my assessment, I also found Dr Smith-Williams to be cold but thorough. I have a resistance to Novocain and previous dental experiences have been nightmarish. I had an infected upper wisdom tooth that needed to be extracted. The day of my wisdom tooth extraction, I found Dr Smith-Williams assistants to be a pleasant and warm contrast to her surly demeanor. They administered gas and she gave me two shots of Novocain (terrifying considering I usually need 4). I waited 15 mins for the drugs to fully take effect, she came back in "to check that the drugs had worked" and within 15 seconds my tooth was out! Seriously. 15 seconds. I've never ever experienced anything like it. If you want a "spa like" experience or a dentist to be your BFF, go somewhere else. If you want a badass dentist to take out your tooth quickly without pain, Dr. S-M is the only person you should ever see. I know she's he only dentist I'll ever see again. read more

The procedure was okay, she was fast but her hands are a bit rough my jaw was hurting I thought I needed more anesthesia that it was the wisdom tooth hurting but it was actually my jaw she's pressing to hard on my jaw to pull the 3rd molars. As for staff her assistant kept choking me with the hose and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to choke during the suction because when I cough she didn't react like "Okay, you choked and?". Also after the surgery it was like "Okay you're done you may go now.". Didn't even tell me if I shouldn't eat this and that, don't do this don't do that. I had to google what I need to do after wisdom teeth removal surgery. They gave me prescription and let me rest for a few minutes and then I left the clinic. read more

I had a trouble with my gum. It turned out that my wisdom tooth grown up and was cutting the gum on the opposite jaw. First, I went to Mass General Hospital. I spent there a whole day - mostly by waiting. Finally, they performed some kind of a "surgery" and told me, that my case will require 45minutes of surgery and free slot is in one month. The next day I called to Dr. Smith-Williams. They were free the next day. She took out the tooth immediately. The whole surgery took less than a minute. I felt no pain. Excellent performance. I have not even sat in her chair yet and I'm already annoyed enough to give this office a poor review - so this review is regarding their professionalism, not their services....yet. First of all the receptionists seem like theyre falling asleep and 100% disinterested in everything. Having been a receptionist myself for quite a while, I find them completely disrespectful and unprofessional. I made an appointment with their office based on a reccommendation by my super-awesome dentist (Dr. Geoffrey Davis) so I trust his opinion and made the call. I sat in the office for 45 minutes, no update from the receptionists on when I would be taken in, no sign of Dr. Smith Williams. Apparently she was stuck in the same appointment from 9am to 12:30 with no end in sight. Why wouldnt you tell me this on my arrival to at least save me a little time???? So I lost my lunch hour, rescheduled, and left fairly irritated. I wouldn't have complained at that, but I just got a voicemail from the staff rescheduling my already rescheduled appointment - to a date of their choosing. Never in the voicemail does the receptionist say "If you're avaialable" or "if that works". Just BAM. Your appointment that is already 2 weeks later than originally planned, and now we're bumping you another week. No expanation at all. I'm tempted to cancel because I feel like they have the attitude of "We're doing you a big favor ok?" I suppose I'll go for my consultation (if I ever get in the door) and see what I think when the Doctor actually appears. read more

I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Smith Williams back in November. I wouldn't recommend pain like that for my worst enemy. I will say the front desk staff was very helpful answering all my questions even looking up minor details with the insurance that I carried. I was very appreciative of their help. Now not having been to the dentist in quite some time (hence the reason for the surgery) I had quite a few questions during my consultation. My questions were answered but you can tell they were in a hurry to get me up and out of there. When it came time to prep for my surgery, the assistant wasn't the most gentle of people setting up but I paid it no mind. I was truly terrified of the situation and Smith Williams made me feel horrible for being scared. I do admit that I was shaking quite a bit so one assistant ended up just holding my hand through the majority of the procedure. I then received my shots of nova cane and Smith Williams started on the first tooth. You could've swore that I hadn't received a drop of any numbing agent because I felt every last bit of tug and tear on my mouth. When I jumped obviously at the pain, Smith Williams asked me condescendingly if I felt pain or pressure as if I didn't know the difference. I received more numbing agents and maybe it was my tolerance but it didn't kick in soon enough. A second assistant was brought in to hold me down and wipe my tears as im going through this horrific experience. Smith Williams at one point says "Stop all the crying and shaking, its not going to help anything." Forgive me please for showing emotion for the tremendous pain I was in. For all 4 teeth she spent over an hour just pulling as the last tooth wasn't coming out quick enough I guess. She then states that shes tired and I might have to come back another time to finish. I almost screamed in my seat!!!! I damn near passed out from pain and I would have to return to the very same place because my surgeon needs a break?!?! Thank the heaven that the last tooth came out not too long after that. Once I was cleaned up, I raced out of the office with my care kit. Maybe my situation was a once in a blue moon type of thing but I do hope that I nor anyone else will experience that ever again. read more

I got a wisdom tooth removed here, and could not have been happier with my experience! The procedure was easy to book and went smoothly. I developed dry socket after the procedure (not something anyone can be faulted for, it just happens sometimes), and was seen on short notice at no additional cost to pack where the tooth was removed. 1. they screwed my appointment time. 2. called me and told me to come 15 prior to the appointment. so i did. THEY MADE ME WAIT FOR 1 HOUR AND 20 MIN. 3. no sorry , no nothing from the doctor 4. some people came after me but were called before me. 5. doctor was frustrated, which I felt right a way 6. she did the anastasiea injection that i wont forget for long time. IT WAS THE MOST PAINFUL SHOT I VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE ( by the way i am not afraid of those) 8.she didnt want to stop , when i told her that i t hurts a lot and i need to breath in , she didnt want to stop. i HAD TO PHYSICALLY MOVE MY HEAD A WAY. 9 I asked her if she could inject the needle slower, SHE ROLLED HER EYES ON ME. 10. I am an adult and ive NEVER had to deal with such rudeness. she started to pull the tooth out right after the injection without even giving it time to work. I was reffed to that doctor by my primary dentist. IT WAS A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE . I FELT LIKE SHE WAS TRYING TO CATCH UP WITH HER TIME ON ME. she never even asked how I feel. she left after pulling the tooth out , and the nurse( very nice) finish with me.
