David James Smith's license to practice medicine was revoked in July, 2024. You can Google the information why. Therefore, there is no reason to review him or his office staff, many of whom were rude and unprofessional. He charged me thousand of dollars co-payment for the medication placed in my intrathecal pain pump each month. He did me a favor when he left my medical group. My new pain doctor used a medication supplier that charged me a $40 co-payment. He also said that Fentanyl was not an appropriate pain pump medication. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Smith for 7 years. My care was OK. I've been diagnosed with failed back surgery syndrome by my new Dr. There was no pain relief after surgery. Dr. Smith seemed overworked. The wait time in his office was anywhere from 1 to 4 hrs. When he closed in the summer of 2024 I wasn't informed. I received a phone call saying my appt had to be rescheduled. I wasn't told anything else. When you have patients that depend on you that's absolutely not the way to do it. I found out on Google he was closed down. He had a high turn over of staff and to many patients that had to wait hours to be seen for their appt. I'm sorry to say this even if he did reopen I wouldn't go back. My continued pain after surgery wasn't addressed, which he should of done. It's extremely disappointing to have a Dr. do this. It took me months to find a new Dr. I'm happy with the treatment I'm receiving now. No long wait times my new Dr is addressing my issues. He was having legal problems which he told me were all dropped. One day he comes in and says his license was suspended he had a new Dr that knew nothing about me, and said he was there to try and keep the practice open the next month closed down. read more

Absolutely horrible! Worst experience I've had at a doctor's office in my entire adult life! The staff was utterly sophomoric, unaccommodating, rude, and, quite frankly, cared not one bit about anything except exercising their own authority. In fact, I am so bothered that I signed up for Yelp for the first time today to leave this comment. There was only one lone woman in the very large waiting room. She told me she'd been waiting for over two hours beyond her appointment time. She also told me that during that two hour period another 4-5 patients had had a similar experience as mine and had left. She said that she couldn't understand why she was still waiting ... against the advice of her husband. I'm thankful I never made it to see the doctor as I'm sure it saved me a lot of future grief. I was a patient here for a few years and I'd have to agree with a lot of the negative reviews. This office is extremely disorganized, some of the staff are unprofessional, Dr Smith can be nice or he can be really really rude depending on what his mood is that day. The turnover among the staff is unlike anything I've seen at other offices either. I put up with a lot of nonsense over the years, but what really tilted me in favor of leaving was when they lost my medical records and after promising to locate them and doing nothing about it, I finally just got disgusted and filled a grievance with my insurance company. Here's what really makes me think low about the doctor, he signed a statement and lied about everything that happened stating that he never requested the records from me and that his staff never took possession of them. This was an obvious lie as his nurse practitioner promised me twice that the staff were looking for them. There were other dishonest things that took place in the practice, things that prompted my insurance company to drop the practice from the insurance altogether. I was actually sent a check from my insurance because of fraudulent insurance charges, so if that doesn't stop you from choosing this doctor, go for it. I can tell you that I was given medical procedures that were not called for with my diagnosis, draw your own conclusions about why a doctor would do that and bill insurance thousands of dollars each time. Once I found a new doctor I was questioned as to why I had been given all those procedures, those very painful procedures that of course did nothing for me. Only a fan of Dr. Smith and the few holdovers from the every-month turnover. Alejandra comes to mind, always a welcoming 'good morning' and sweet smile thru the hole in the frosted-glass partition. Naomi and other new faces always come in positive; but I feel that the load of patients Dr. Smith serves, plus his inability to retain staff, is not helping at all. Which means that the staff we see are overwhelmed w/too many patients and lacking the skills learned from continuous employment - teams work well together when they stay together. They are the front-line faces we see that unfortunately get the heat from the high volume and overworked staff (overworked is just my assumption - maybe it's just too stressful and leads to turnover, or something else entirely...not sure). I've been a patient here for a quite a while now and I feel like they don't truly care about their patients as they advertise. I am incensed that the DOJ and the other government agencies would lump persons with chronic pain, a real and misunderstood disease, with addicts on the street!!! I tried calling for a week and a half leaving multiple messages with no one calling me back. I tried calling for 30 minutes with no answer. I have dealt with more than one pain management facilities in the past 4 years but I rate Dr. Smith the lowest of any I've been to. On my first visit visit everything seems great he explained a lot of things to me. Telling me about the Titanium block he would put in my back and all would be. Ignoring my request to continue with the injections I was getting on a monthly basis from my previous Dr. I return in 30 days for my next appointment , to wait 30 or more minutes to get in, and the only thing that happened was the doctor's assistant came in to tell me but they haven't got any approval for my insurance. Come back in 30 days was what I was told so I came back in 30 days waiting to get in to get in only to have them come and tell me again that they haven't got approval for my insurance. read more

Dr. David Smith and his staff are wonderful. I have Osteoarthritis in my hands and lower back and have constant pain. Dr. Smith has given me epidurals for my back and been able to relive may pain a dream come true. He has given me a cream for the pain in my hands and done injections to help with the pain. I am so thankful to Dr. Smith and his staff for all there help with getting insurance approvals so I can have the procedures I need. I am very upset with the level of care I am experiencing from this clinic. I have a referral that was written in February of 2022. I have been to my doctor for referral three times each time the referral was faxed to Dr Smith's office. Today, March 29, they claim they just now received it. I have chronic debilitating degenerative disc disease with problems in cervical, lumbar,and thoracic regions of my spine. I am in severe pain every moment. When I called today, I was informed,they just received this referral, and have not read it. They have many patients, and refused to help me. I asked to speak to the doctor, and was told The doctor doesn't answer calls . I am feeling frustrated and angry and consider this to be substandard care. I would caution others to avoid this clinic. They do not provide care they provide a source of aggravation and denial to people that are severely affected,With callous disregard, and disrespect. If I could Give David James Smith 0 stars I would. The last time I saw him was In 2004 and I will never forget it, It still haunts me to this day, He almost killed me. He Implanted a pain pump in me in 2003 and in February 2004 I went to his surgical office to get my pump refilled with a cocktail of medications from Joyce his nurse, I thought everything was fine until I received a call from Joyce when driving home and she said "drive straight home and don't fall asleep". She also wanted my address and said she will meet me at my house. When I arrived at my house she called me two other times and asked me if I was getting dizzy and I said yes she told me not to leave anywhere, she miscalculated the medicine in my pump,...in other words she overdosed me. When she finally came to my house she hooked me up to a IV and stopped my pump and turned it off taking my vitals for an hour and a half. She had me write down her phone number and told me to call her in case of emergency but she would only be available Sunday not Saturday (this was Friday). The telememetry report said 12.5 mg/ml but that was incorrect. That next two fills were jumped to 25.0 mg/ml a huge jump and that's when things got really bad. I started feeling something was really wrong and started feeling sick. I called Dr Smiths office and told them this was an emergency and something was really wrong with the pump, I kept leaving messages with the rude staff and and Dr Smith Never called me back, Then it hit ....I went into full blown WITHDRAWLS for 2 WEEKS IN MY BED with no sleep, no eating NO HELP, I kept calling Dr Smith and and my attorney and no one helped me, I finally ended up in the emergency room and they gave me a shot of pain medication.When that wore off I ended up in the ER again for another pain shot. When I finally was able to get an appointment with DR. Smith I was talking to one of the rudest office girls talking into that that small hole with non seethru glass that separates his staff from the clients ( quite disgusting). I was able to see Dr Smith and I was really upset with him and let him know He then Looked at my pump and confirmed something was wrong with my pump and that it was defective but he never gave me a game plan what he was going to to about it, he left me hanging. so my next appointment with him to get my medications his staff gave me a paper to sign so I wouldn't sue him and I refused and he refused to see me or give me my medications that I needed. He has his own pharmacy so he controlled everything. It was a Friday at 4:oo so I called my primary Dr and he helped me with the medication part. I was stuck with that pump inside of me for 4 years inactive beeping every 7 seconds driving me crazy until I finally found a doctor that would take it out. I have also witnessed and talked with other patients who have been abused by Dr Smith. This man almost killed me, I never have experienced so much pain as I did as I did when I went through the withdrawls and my body contorting the way it did, I am lucky I'm alive today. Since then I have been with a much better pain management Doctor and the office staff is so great . It is not normal to be abused by a Doctor or his staff you can do much better they are out there, so if you see this posting Please do yourself a favor and run! read more

I respect Dr. Smith as a physician but he needs to get off the dime and hire some competent help instead of the 9 month trainees from the local student loan mill. Very busy office that quadruple books patients in 15 minute blocks. It's Not unusual to wait for hours in the waiting room. However dr. Ahmad and dr. Smith are excellent doctors and understand your pain is real and I want to help you. Although the pendulum is swinging chords government officials not wanting doctors to prescribe opiates to help patients with back problems Etc live a semi-normal life as without them it would be impossible to function nor get out of bed without excruciating pain. Both doctors and nurses leave you when you tell them you're in pain and when you have documentation through MRIS dad the pain supporting documents is legitimate they can help you by not only easing your pain through medications but through alternative solutions such as epidurals or physical therapy or even surgery. I've been a patient for over 2 years and although the government is trying to force doctors not to prescribe opiates it's truly appreciated that dr. Smith and dr. Ahmad actually listen to you and believe that you are in pain and will work with you as long as you are taking your medications as prescribed and doing everything they tell you to do. I've been a patient since January 2017 with severe bulged discs and cannot work do to my inability to sit or stand for longer than 30 minutes. Dr. Smith is helping me apply for disability until and if back surgery even works. This review is not based on Dr. Smith. I never got a chance to have an appointment with him. Thanks to his office staff, it never got that far. Also of note, I have worked in the medical field for 22 years, so I understand how the process works. I have been trying to make a new patient appointment for a week now. I have left several messages for Gaby, at least once a day. I did receive one call back on my cell phone, when I had been leaving my work number as the preferred contact. I returned that call within 30 minutes. No luck. Whenever I do talk to someone, I still end up getting transferred to Gaby. Today, I finally talked to someone again. I said that I was calling to make an appointment. Staff member said "ok, what's his name?" - really? I said, "I am the patient (and gave my name and date of birth)". The very next question was "well, we need a referral before making an appointment." Yeah, I know. I have the referral and auth. She then transferred me (probably to Gaby again?). I was on hold for 17 minutes. (I was doing other things, so I could put it on speaker phone and wait) I hung up and called them again. I spoke to the same staff member hoping that I could get someone right away and she transferred me to Gabys voice mail again. I did not leave a message this time. No point. I called my insurance and asked for my referral to be redirected to any one else. I called my primary doctor and let them know what I did. I tried to give the courtesy of letting Dr. Smith's office know what I did and I got the same rude staff member who kept cutting me off.... I was a patient of Dr.Smith for many years, he only hires the best and if they can't keep up with the pace in the office they are let go. I would still be going there if not for moving to VA. I was sent to him by a Navy Dr, all of you who complain that the staff was rude to you did you ever consider he is in high demand, if your sitting in there the phones do not stop ringing, the office fills up fast. So why not give the staff a break I always found if you treat people with kindness it is hard for them to be rude to you. Horrible customer service from office staff (especially Gabby) trying to simply reschedule an appointment. Over one week, I left 7 messages that were never returned. I reached the front office 3 times and I was told that my call would be returned on the same day with no returned call. I waited on hold for 26 minutes to be told they could not help me at this time. In the rare occasion I did reach someone from their office staff, I was told they could help me and they would hang up before I could ask to be transferred or leave a message. I tried to explain I was in the middle of dealing with the death of a family member and they still did not care. My last experience was to reach the office and be left on hold without anyone ever picking up again. No one should be treated in this manner especially when you already have chronic pain. I only gave a 1 star because there wasn't a button for a zero star. First the front desk is rude and doesn't have absolutely any customer service skills. After being a patient here for 4yrs enough is enough. Wait time for your scheduled appt is always at least an hour and a half to 2 hrs before they even call you to the back. Not to mention they charge for pre authorizations something that is free per my insurance and have paid over 500$ to them so that I can get the proper meds needed. After talking to my insurance company they didn't know why he was charging. They take from people that is already on SSI, disability, SSC knowing these people are in a limited income. The DR only comes in to fill out your prescription and leaves. Not to mention trying to call the office you will never get through or will be out on hold for over 30 min or they will never get back on the phone. This office is a disgrace to all other Dr's that actually care about their patients. Also I was supposed to see a neurologist and after 4yrs because I complained to insurance company and have spoken with an attorney they was willing to talk about the situation. Then when talking with them and told them about the pre-auth fees I was told Dr. Smith wasnt allowed to charge his patients when I said then we need all.our money back that we paid for these pre-auth they said to talk to the Dr in the next visit. I thought I would take this National Dr's Day to properly thank Dr. Smith for being there for me over the past 15 years. It was because of him that I traveled out here from Minnesota with nowhere to live, and no real plan, just knowing that he was the Dr that was the answer to my problems. I was right. I have my life back thank to him and his staff. They have kept me as pain free as possible and as mobile as possible since I rolled into his office 6 months after landing in San Diego. *I saw Dr Thompson and she was nice and helpful. The front desk staff is so awful, I would give no stars of that was an option. It took me over a week to even get the right person (intake coordinator) on the phone. First you call and they put you on hold, (sometimes indefinitely) then even hang up on you. If you get connected to a voice mail box it will always be full. When I did get through I was told the intake coordinator leaves at 3 and they took down a message and said she would call me on Friday. At 2:45 the call had not come so I called back to reach her before 3 and was put on hold for half an hour, no one ever picked back up and I eventually hung up. When I did get to see a dr I was prescribed medication that I could not take due to an allergy. When I called back to try to reach a Dr./nurse it was the same thing. Put on hold and no one picked up. Got through to a voice mail box but it was all full. Left a message with the front desk and did not receive a call back. A week later I tried to reach a nurse again and was hung up, put on hold indefinitely and at this moment still have not been helped. No running water in the bathroom, gross. I was so unsure what to expect as I've put off pain mgmt until it's unbearable as I await my knee replacement. I have a very complicated history and some very rare issues. I didn't get through on the phone the first time which made me nervous. I stopped in and made my appt. it's a nice bldg but the waiting room is interesting; every kind of person. I LOVE THIS PLACE! My nurse was bright, knowledgeable and compassionate. I thanked her for listening (really engaged active listening) as it's so rare. Bob, my new hero, comes in with the same qualities and does a very thorough exam. He was so understanding and straight forward. Due to being on medi-cal, I expect very little but they did everything. Until I find a new rheumy, they can do everything downstairs at surgical treatment for injections & x-rays. The anticipation of being pain free here within a month or so gave me hope for the 1st time in 6 years. I was dx'd in 2012 with severe active rheumatoid disease + a lot of other stuff. (16 prescriptions a day including a weekly biologic injection I give myself + 14 specialists and 13 surgeries so far... They "get it" they fully understood and are taking an active role as we develop a new long term treatment plan. Unfortunately I've had the displeasure of dealing with the office staff here for over 3 years. This is not a one time occurrence. They have been extremely rude, unprofessional, called me names and have a could care less attitude when dealing with you. Should you dare to EVER say a thing, you are met with angry so called "managers" who are even worse than their counterparts. They have such a high employee/DR turnover that I have seen more than 7 doctors since being seen here. I am filing a complaint with the insurance, medical ombudsman of California and the health board as they have told me I must pay for medication authorizations or they simply will NOT assist you. How can this office charge medi-cal and Medicare patients money to send a request???? Calls are NEVER returned no matter how many times you call or how many messages you leave. I succumbed and payed their "fee" to send a request to my insurance only to have it not be done. I paid over 4 months ago and it STILL has not been completed. The staff are literally the absolute WORST medical staff I've ever seen/worked with and my background is in healthcare. (I have worked with hundreds of doctors and clinicians) I don't understand how no authority does a thing about this. Short of medical mismanagement, I'm not continuing to endure this disgusting behavior from what should be people who have compassion and professionalism. Can't I give them 0 instead? If I could give this place a negative review I would do it. They are the WORST! I have a spinal cord stimulator installed for pain and Medtrontics does business with "Dr. Smith" he said the leads needed to be adjusted in my neck, they were going to make a small incision and move the leads over to where they needed to be. They did the procedure on site, when they "put me under" I was not completely out and I screamed several times as Dr. Smith cut not into my neck but make a 6 inch gash down my back, he had decided instead of just moving the two leads he was going to replace them from all the way down my back. I was not completely under and could feel him cutting into me. There were "several" witnesses that I talked to after and they all were "apologetic" to me. I now have WORSE back issues than I ever had. This man should have his license PULLED. Hes rude, unethical and doesnt know what hes doing. He is going to end up killing someone. I wish I had read these two reviews before I wasted my precious time with this unprofessional, unkind and acrimonious staff. I was so frustrated with my attempts to communicate over the phone that I went into the office to find out what they needed for me to get an appointment. I thought I might get somewhere speaking with the "office manager" who was just as rude and unscrupulous. My primary care doctors staff sent my information with a referral 4 times to Dr. Smiths office staff and they lost it. The manager told me that the young woman from my doctors office was rude and said that she wouldn't send the information again, which was a lie. This office staff is ridiculously unprincipled. What seems even more dishonorable to me is the fact that they haven't even tried to rectify the other two negative yelp reviews with some sort of response. I think they are very busy and instead of telling people that they aren't currently taking new patients, they simply treat people so horribly that they find help somewhere else. Dr Smith is very kind but I completely agree with Vivian H: A few members of his staff are quite rude and unprofessional which completely makes the experience of dealing with his office way too stressful for anybody needing medical care to want to deal with. They see over 50 patients most days and Dr. Smith spends less than 5 minutes per patient. The nurses never follow up on what they promise (i.e. samples, scheduling diagnostic testing, wound wrapping) and I have even seen them erase notes from the computer to avoid getting caught making a mistake...then it appears to be the patients fault for not following up. I have heard many awful conversations between the nurses from the hallway and it is totally disrepectful. He needs better help and another doctor to help him with his practice. Don't go!! read more
