I have had prior experiences with Smith & Thomas that have been satisfactory. However, when I dealt with them on a more personal and intimate level in regards to my wife's internment, I was beyond satisfied. If I could give this place zero stars I personally would. I never experienced the level of disrespect, disregard and unprofessional from a company until I did business with Smith and Thomas Funeral Home Inc. 1.) In the middle of making my dad's funeral arrangements. My baby sister was in a physical altercation with an employee of Smith and Thomas Funeral Home. No staff members apologized to the family or even attempted to remove the violent employee from the premises. I sadly was in the middle of the physical altercation and I am currently 5 months pregnant. 2.) While making our funeral arrangements the next day. The owner Mary Smith was micromanaging every step of planning process. There was constant calls and she kept demanding to have our life insurance policy brought to her. I believe these matters could have and should have been handle once we left the office. 3.) My father was not dressed in the appropriate attire that I picked out and informed the funeral director of my selection. When I asked a staff member why is my dad dressed that way. They informed me "Oh I don't know, Ms. Smith instructed me, oh there is nothing I can do". My siblings and I were faced with complete disrespect and disregard. It wasn't until I threaded to make a formal complaint that my wishes were taken seriously. 4.) During my father's visitation the owner Mary Smith, verbally attacked me. 5.) At my dad's funeral that same employee Eunice Young who attacked my sister was apart of his funeral service. Mary Smith and her staff had no regard for the disrespect and violence me and my siblings endured. Losing a loved one is a difficult time. Losing a parent is a very hard pill to swallow. A company such as Smith and Thomas Funeral Home who has been in business this long. Should have been more professionally and more respectable. Due to my siblings really wanting to use their services that is the ONLY reason we went with them. Sadly, my father Eric Smith was the vice president of Smith and Thomas Funeral Home. He worked there for 26 years. This establishment found every way possible to constantly disrespect and disregard his children. I highly advise NO ONE to use their services. Do not be deceived by the five-star review; it is a paid endorsement. I have never visited a funeral home that was as unappealing as this one. Let's start with the expensive service, the poor customer service, and the lack of regard for the wishes of the consumer. Additionally, it is important to remember that they are robbing from the deceased. I would subject them to a full investigation if I were in a position to do so. We respectfully request that you locate an alternative funeral home to provide for your deceased loved ones, as this establishment is not suitable. I lost my darling wife to that demon, brain cancer last November. I had some experience with Smith & Thomas in the past and thought they delivered really good service. I received stellar service for my Honey. We had a slight delay in starting the wake service, but for what they presented to us was worth the wait. My Neicy looked like angel that day. Her makeup was flawless and the Chicago Bears theme that was definitely what she would have wanted to represent was completely on point! At this difficult time it was very refreshing to work with Smith & Thomas Funeral Home. They were very professional when they accepted my grandmother's body. They seemed very caring and accommodating and made themselves available to answer any questions. This woman that is the funeral Director Mary Smith was was a big disappointment when speaking with her the first time regarding an Insurance payment she asked me if i wanted my share to go to my daughter and at that i said no, 5 months have past and several calls, Mary Smith told me that this case is close contact the insurance company which i have and the check was mailed to Smith and Thomas funeral home. Grieving families PLEASE avoid doing business with this establishment. Sadly my loved one passed away end of last year. I didn't hesitate to contact S&T since my family has done business with them for years. What a huge mistake! Upon arriving an hour late Mr. Eric (staff) showed up to pick up my loved one remains. He walks up does not speak at all, I had several questions regarding next steps and Mr. Eric was rude and did not provide much information. He then throws his jacket into one of my family arms and told him "You're going to help me" meaning assisting him with carrying my loved ones remains out of the residence. Moments later he grabs the body and drags my loved one down the stairs on the gurney with one hand..in front of us!! Next he places our loved one in the vehicle with gas cans in the back of the vehicle. This is extremely disturbing to watch on top of the news of the sudden loss. Some days go by my family is contacting the funeral to ask about funeral package options since my loved one did not have a policy...members of the family also went up to the funeral home to make arrangements. When they arrived they were met by Mr. Eric Thomas who rudely asked "What Y'all ain't got no money" as he throws the brochures across the table at my relatives. My mother responded by saying no that's not the case we do not have a policy. So we chose an affordable option for us and paid cash for funeral services/cremation. Days later the owner Ms. Smith requested that my cousins (his kids) come to the funeral home mind you they do not live in Illinois to sign paperwork for permission to cremate and make arrangements. She only had one of the children sign forms, she just needed all 3 birth certificates....which could have been provided electronically, so a complete wasted trip and money. Once Ms. Smith collected her money she went to sleep snoring at the table. On the day of the service we arrived and there's a man outside handing out Funeral stickers for the windshield, I thought this was strange since we ordered a cremation for my loved one. As we approach the chapel where my loved is scheduled to be, I noticed there's a man inside the casket who is NOT my loved one. He was dressed in my loved ones clothing, and inside the casket we picked. We walked into the chapel and we were stopped by Eunice (staff member) specifically asking for the daughter of the deceased. My cousin comes in and of course she is emotional and let her know this is NOT my father. Eunice insists that this is him and that people look different once they are embalmed. It took for us to demand that she let us see the guy in the casket hands to compare them to my loved ones hands who had a disability for her to back off. This lady was extremely rude and disrespectful to all of us and refused to go get her manager (Ms. Smith). She even took the picture from upfront and leaned in the casket telling all of us "see that is him". She went so far as to say well he isn't here!! Then she says well I been on vacation so I really don't know. I am truly shocked, disgusted, hurt and appalled by their behavior on this day. After this exchange of back and forth she finally let us see the hands and she noticed the error and immediately closed the casket and went to grab the owner. Ms. Smith comes downstairs to speak with my mother and offers her apologies and says " We made a grave error". The funeral is now delayed 40 minutes almost an hour to fix the mistake. My mother asked Ms. Smith where is my brother? She responds very rude and says he's in the freezer. At this point my mom is hysterical and almost had an asthma attack. Ms. Smith proceeded to ask how can I fix this? And to give her 20mins...which turned into 40 mins as she prepared the correct body herself. Her employees also didn't try to fix the error in a discreet way, they rolled both bodies right in front of us as guest were arriving causing more confusion. We had family members/friends who could not say final goodbyes due to the error the funeral home made. Ms. Smith also tried to pay off my mom offering her an insulting $500 check which was no where near the amount we paid for the services. To make things worse his daughter (my cousin) was the "contractee" Ms. Smith had a brief talk with her she asked how could something like this happen. She told my cousin what can I do to fix it, she said I'd like my money back..Ms. Smith offered $500 my cousin didn't take it and that's when she offered to my mother, then told her not to tell the family. Its a shame what type of people they have become. We did finally had a service 40 mins later. The staff were NOT in attendance but instead gathered at the receptionist desk in a conversation. We asked for them to come in several times, a family friend had to go and get them to close out the service. They NEVER called us when the remains came back in, we had to track them down at the crematory and have our attorney contact them to get them back 2 months later read more

My family has used Smith & Thomas for years, which is why we are utterly appalled by our recent treatment. My loved one, an aunt died suddenly in the early hours of May 2nd, and due to a family members familiarity with the funeral home, called Smith & Thomas to retrieve her body. When Eric Smith arrived to to the home, he did so alone, without assistance. When the family member who called (another aunt and the decedents sister) inquired as to how he expected to move the body he replied "you're going to help me" meaning my septuagenarian aunt and a disabled family member were expected to help lift the body. My aunt, rather vexed by this statement, informed him that she couldn't physically assist and that the male family member was on dialysis and was entirely unable to do so. At this Mr. Smith angrily said, "let me see the scene." After entering the house and assessing rather quickly that he needed help, he left, saying that he would bring an assistant. When he returned, to my family's absolute horror, he had brought with him, a person whom he had seemingly just picked up off the street to assist. As the two were moving the body, they found that they still needed more help, and my elderly aunt, ended up having to struggle with them to pick up and carry her sisters body. The story gets worse. Shortly after Mr. Smith and the presumed crackhead left with my deceased aunt, her daughter remembered that it was her mother's wish that she be given over to the care of another funeral home when she passed and not Smith & Thomas. When she was able to get Mr. Smith on the phone, she thanked him for picking up her mother, but expressed her mother's wish that she be cared for by another funeral home. She even agreed to renumerate him for the cost of pick up. Mr. Smith became furious and began yelling. He told her that it was not possible and lied and said that he had already embalmed her mother, which wasn't possible because only a few hours had passed. He told her to call him the next day and that the charge for the pick up would be $700. When she called the next day, she was told that her mother had gone through the embalming process and the cost owed now was $1,300. My cousin was left in absolute shock and told him told wasn't what they had agreed to. He told her, very nastily, that she "must have been mistaken." He then went on and continued to insult her, her mother and our family. Luckily the director of the funeral home that my aunt had wished to take care of her remains, intervened and offered to cover Mr. Smith's fee. He was even kind enough to personally go with my cousin to rescue my aunts body from Smith & Thomas. While there Eric Smith continued to behave abhorrently, even making fun of the spelling of cousins name. This man was a monster from start to finish. My family and our friends will never patron them again and I warn and implore you all, to avoid them like the plague. read more

Don't Do Business with These People! Back in December (2013), I assisted my mother in arranging the funeral services for my recently deceased sister. We originally hired Smith & Thomas to do it, but ran into some trouble with them and decided to cancel the service. After informing them that we no longer wanted their assistance, they charged us a $300 administrative fee. This fee is not listed in their material, but we paid it because they had my sister's body. I don't know where to start with the horrible experience that doing business with them..they accept my uncle body didn't exam him upon arrival they literally let my uncle's body decompose in a back room. They never embalmed his body They just put him in a casket and went about there business. They decided to contact me after my uncle's face fell off his body. These unprofessional people also left my family members at the funeral home without letting them know that the precession was starting. They also didn't supply my family with obituaries until after the service was over. This was already a very emotion thing for my family to deal with everything that endured was unthoughful and disrespectful. I will be contacting my lawyer immediately. read more

Unprofessional, unsympathetic, unpleasant communication and questionable business ethics. Went in to make arrangements to bury mom. Due to grief and whole process of arranging home going, didn't have updated insurance document on hand. When explained to them that it was valid and would be returning immediately with updated info within 1 hour, this female employee who I interacted with was used a harsh unsympathetic tone of voice which was rude and cocky. Has my relative remains removed immediately to another frequently used dignified funeral home. There are MANY funeral homes to use, this one is NOT one of them. So if you want to avoid unwarranted anger while burying your loved one, don't do business here!!! read more

I've used this funeral home to provide services to both, my brother and mother many years ago. I was referred to them by a family member. Mary Smith and her staff were compassionate enough and made me feel at ease when carrying out my mother's final wishes. Luckily, we had insurance and things went rather smoothly including communication. However, when planning a funeral, be prepared to understand that you are charged for EVERYTHING down to the smallest detail! Including the color of the family car. I've learned that it's better to do some of the small stuff on your own like obituaries, flowers, musician, pastor, and sign-in books because those things from the funeral home are costly and adds up quickly. I have also learned that buying your casket directly from the manufacturer is so much more affordable because funeral homes tends to increase prices on everything. Go to Loyal Casket company on California. In my opinion, all funeral homes look dated and needs more modern makeovers. Overall, I had a good experience. read more
