WW required payment in full prior to the trip, so travelers had to trust the company to provide the amazing trip they advertised. On their website WW claims to specialize in a unique concept of "standard accommodation" with 5 star reviews. We stayed in low budget hotels for 7 nights. We spent 3 of those nights in a hotel that was more like a 60 year old hostel. The bathrooms were musty and had no shower curtain, the sheets had holes, the rooms were cold and the thermostats did not work properly. Breakfast was to be included at each hotel. What a joke! At the second hotel breakfast was cold bread, hard boiled eggs, a banana and yogurt. Nothing hot was offered. WW markets its services to clients by promising educational trips with a fully guided tour, yet a tour guide was not hired for the Acropolis, the most important archeological site in all of Greece. People were disappointed. We were told, by Simone, to google sites on our smart phones and then take turns guiding our fellow travelers through Athens. Most of our activities were freebies meant to fill our time. One day we drove to the top of a mountain and stood under a modern windmill. Simone said it would be thrilling - I was not thrilled. When I got home, I researched the cost of hotels, car rental, and the three meals WW provided. I discovered I could have booked this trip myself for $1,575 less than what Wanderlust/Wanderlearn charged. Simone provided the cheapest trip possible and greatly profited from her clients. I feel cheated.

After I had gotten out of the Air Force, finished college, and had saved a little money, I bought a…read moreplane. But I hadn't flown in about 13 years and I was in serious need of instructed flight time. Coming from a family of pilots and aviation enthusiasts I had been around many of the airports in the southwest Ohio area since I was a child and now they are rapidly disappearing; Dahio (Dayton-New Lebanon), Miamitown, Brookville, and Blue Ash are gone. So I went to a small family run and family friendly airport in Waynesville, Ohio, just south of where I had grown up. There I met Red Stewart, the best, most knowledgeable, most competent light plane flight instructor I'd ever met. Red, was quite a character - he had forgotten more about aviation than I will probably ever know, and he could do things with a Piper Cub that very few others could or can do - like throw the stick out the window and land the Cub with the throttle, trim and rudders alone! Now Red is gone, and Cubby and Cathy Stewart run the airport. It is one of the best (and last) places in Southwest Ohio/Southeast Indiana area to learn to fly a variety of light aircraft, or to simply get an airplane ride. It's a small airport with a well maintained grass strip, tie-down space and some hangars, clean restrooms, a swingset for your kids and a friendly old dog who greets all visitors. Regardless of whether you want tricycle or tail-dragger instruction, here you can get GOOD instruction in well maintained aircraft a very reasonable rates. And they have fuel and parts, as well as maintenance and repair. When we needed parts for our Ercoupe, they were able to supply most of what we needed. And even if you don't fly, it's always busy on a beautiful day with airplanes coming and going, aerobatics, and sky divers - just come, watch, relax and pet the dog. What I love most about Red Stewart Field (Waynesville AIrport), is the total love and dedication of Cubby and Cathy Stewart to aviation and to passing their skills and passion to a whole new generation of pilots and people who love the art and science of flying. This country will always need pilots, and there isn't a better place to get your start in aviation than at Red Stewart Field on Rt. 42 just south of downtown Waynesville, Ohio.

It's also the headquarters of…read moreSporty's -- so if you fly in here, expect a neat little "museum" and gift shop as well as a cafe managed by Sporty's upstairs. There's a GPS approach and a VOR-B non-precision approach. The cafe is self-serve with vending machines and coffee, but they do have some microwaves. I was disappointed there was no free coffee (I guess I'm spoiled and have come to expect that), but maybe it was around somewhere and I just didn't track it down. If you're looking for a gift for a pilot buddy, check out the Sporty's shop inside this airport. Can't comment on the costs to tie down or hangar a plane here, but flying in here was easy and the staff were pretty nice!

Not only home of Sporty's Pilot shop, but also Sporty's Academy. I flew the SkyCatcher for 80% of my training, I did get some time in a 172 as well. The place is always clean and well kept, they have vending machines on premise (not sure why there isn't a restaurant here I am sure it would make money. The server Hot Dogs, Brats, and Mettwurst for free every Saturday from Noon till 2pm. Fuel prices are not horrible, and flight time isn't bad for rental since they do a very good job of keeping the aircraft airworthy. They have an area to get preflight weather and a very large seating area to relax and watch planes come and go while studying or just relaxing (as best you can in plastic chairs). The runway and taxiways are very well maintained. Just remember Saturday's during the summer the traffic pattern can get full around free lunch time. But the winter time is a great time to fly in and get a quick bite if in the area. I will be back, even if just to stop into Sporty's pilot shop for my aviation needs or wants. They also in the past have given an airplane away every couple years, But you have to buy something a Sporty's either in the shop or online to win when they do have this going on. Back to Clermont airport. It is always worth a stop, they also have an aviation warbird museum across the runway that I haven't stopped into yet.
