My father died a few months ago unexpectedly. Having never dealt with having to make funeral…read morearrangements before, my family and I were at a bit of a loss... We called a couple of places and got quotes. I was pretty shocked at the prices to say the least. Then I remembered that an attorney I had dealt with had recommended Omega, so I called them. To say I was surprised by the price differences is an understatement. They were easily half and almost a 3/4 less than some of the other Funeral homes we had called. From the first person we dealt with on the phone, to the last, the customer service was first rate. Having to deal with the loss of a family member is hard enough...having to be wary of being taken advantage of during an already stressful time is crazy. Thanks to David and the entire staff at Omega we didn't have to worry about that at all.

We were told it would take two weeks. When that deadline passed, we had to call them -- only to be told it would be yet another week. Not once did they make any attempt to proactively update us. During a time of grief, this kind of neglect is sad, frustrating, and frankly disgusting. No family should be treated this way, and no company in this industry should operate with such indifference.

Of course when Emily's was called for pick-up they told the hospital they were not working with me. My next surprise came when Emily's informed me there would be an extra charge (several hundred dollars) for repair because my father had an autopsy and this charge always applies to anyone autopsied. In the phone estimate they told me the repair charge would only apply if there was damage that needed to be fixed for a viewing (like to face or hands - which there was not). The viewing went OK, but then it took forever to get the ashes back. I was told 3 days but had to finally call them to follow-up after six days. And now I am still waiting for a death certificate. The Dr signed his paperwork the first day but apparently Emily's did not do their part. So after multiple phone calls, including being told someone would research it and call back (they did not call back), I find out 22 days later Emily's is faxing the paperwork over to the county that day. While I've been waiting to close bank accounts, and file forms (like release of the autopsy results) that I cannot do without a death certificate. Emily's had some good points: the price and the viewing were both good, but they have some serious administrative problems that have made a difficult time even harder.

They have cremated people whose friends and family could not pay, they did it making no profit, just so the grieving can have their loved ones ashes without having to stress and cone up with money or nit having the money and never getting their loved ones ashes back. They have also been quietly cremating the unhoused pets that pass on the streets. They give their owners a paw print and the ashes. They understand the bond people form with their furry family members while surviving outdoors. I have worked with the other bigger funeral homes and I can tell you they do not offer any such services. They are truly a great community members.

My mom was on hospice for 8 days, I provided the hospice with Cornerstone's name when the time came. Elizabeth and her team came to the house to pick up my mother, it was a very dignified and lovely parting knowing my mom was leaving in the care of Cornerstone. Elizabeth is a one woman show and still is able to be super responsive and on top of it all. She is very professional, friendly, incredibly compassionate, and deeply dedicated to her profession. Prices are affordable and transparent. Cornerstone has been in business over 20+ years and Elizabeth has been a mortician for over 30+ years. While my family and I only used cremation, Cornerstone offers a variety of options: Green Burial, Visitations, Burial Services, Funeral Services, Eco-Friendly Water Cremation, Gift of Life, Witness Cremation, Military Honors, and Natural Organic Reduction. There is NO cookie cutter approach to death and what the next steps are. You can create a celebration of life on your terms, or whatever your loved one expressed before they passed. In addition to her steadfast work as a funeral director, Elizabeth wrote The Green Burial Guidebook, gave a TEDx talk called, "Going Green: The Last Act of Environmental Volunteerism", and is the voice of the autopsy exhibit in the forensic wing at the United States National Museum of Medicine. She worked with Herland Forest in Washington to steward the first natural organic reduction human composting. In closing, sure I could have just written a simple 5-star review and listed the details of how Elizabeth and Cornerstone assisted me with my mother's cremation, but I felt they are so deserving of you knowing how incredible they are and all their services.
