What a great selection of goods in this Smart & Final Extra! location on Venice Blvd! It was my first time venturing into an "Extra!" location, and truthfully, I was pretty impressed. I didn't really feel like I was in a Smart & Final... however that's supposed to feel. Although I didn't try their produce, I left with a pretty decent little smorgasbord of items; what would have cost like $120+ at Ralph's or Vons ended up costing about $80 here. I was surprised by some of the products and deals they offer here. For $9.99, I could have purchased 6 plastic, red cereal bowls paired with a plastic cereal container. Tbh, I came to look for cereal containers, but those red bowls were pretty ugly imho, and I knew I'd probably never use them, so I didn't buy that. My BF asked me to buy chocolate pudding, and I was stoked to see that a 4-pack only cost $1.49 compared to Ralph's where they charge like $3.49 or more for the same product. I'm not sure if it's because I arrived at 9:25pm and they close at 10pm, but I don't recall seeing any employees walking the aisles asking if anyone needed help finding anything. I had a few questions, but that's my bad for getting there so close to closing time. **One thing to note** and again, maybe it's because it was so close to closing time, but once a cashier has rang up your items, there's no turning back if you change your mind about an item or if you suddenly realize that you don't have enough money on any of your cards to pay for the rest of your purchase. I was mortified to find myself in the latter situation, and I was also shocked that the cashier couldn't just remove a few dollars worth of things from my cart so that I could finish paying and be on my way, hoping I wouldn't see anyone I know on my way out. This really nice mother with her young daughter stepped up and helped me out, and I was sooo so thankful, despite feeling really embarrassed. She assured me that it was alright - we've all been there. Even though Christmas was only a few days away, I got the impression that this woman was the type to give others a hand any day of the year. I promised her that the next time I saw someone in a position like that, that I would pay it forward and help them out, like she helped me. read more

I am in Smart and final this morning and I only see one cashier. She is doing everything she can with this long line. She called for back up and no one has came to help her. I see a manager and the manager is not opening up a line , this line is super long. This is ridiculous. This smart and final needs to do better and I want to thank the cashier lorraine for being polite and doing the best she can in this horrible situation. why is the manager not stepping up? Recently was in the hunt for 6oz plastic lids for dessert containers. Went to 3 stores and I couldn't believe that neither of them had any but I had to leave a comment the last store I went to,in Culver City. At check out a young lady was putting away somethings and said hello" Did you find everything you need and I said "no". I proceeded to let her know what I was looking for. She said let me check because we just got a delivery. She came back and said "I'm sorry" We didn't receive that shipment in yet. I just thought that was so kind of her to check the order that had just arrived. That's what going over and beyond means. And for that act of kindness they get five stars from me. Not enough employees on staff. The employees on hand seem miserable to be there. They called for a manager 3 times then had to physically step off to find one. This location is poorly managed. As I write this the cashier is still searching for a manager to complete the transaction of the woman in front of me. Hope I make it out of this place in under an hour. read more

I came to the store at 9:57pm - when it was supposed to close at 10:00pm and KYMECHA, opened the door to say "we are closed, I know it's 10." when in fact it was 9:58pm. She proceeded to be disrespectful by speaking to someone else, "come on coach come in." May I add it was pouring rain, there was flash flood warnings and I was standing in the rain to try and get some WATER. WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE HAD - I won't be coming back here. read more

This Smart & Final is the nicest one we have been to and we will go out of our way to shop at this one. It is a big box store, but you can also shop there for everyday items if you want. We tend to go there to stock up. This store is clean and well stocked. The service is great. Our grandson loves this place because of the amazing selection of candy and cookies. He has his own drawer and he stocks up every couple of months on those much needed items. Getting your cart around is super easy and there are always plenty. Parking is a breeze. The parking lot is huge. There is plenty of handicapped spots. Whatever I need here in the way of produce, and dry goods I can get here. They also have cooking items for chefs or catering companies. have fun. read more

Amazing Place to shop. Good staff! Very helpful Security Guard Really funny . The reason some staff aren't looking too happy is because customer's are just being really difficult. Like give the staff a damn break. They bag your groceries. They help you with price arrangements and digital coupon assistance. They actually check the back too see if a specific item is not on the shelf. They open the restroom for customers (like myself). Just be patient with the staff. Smart & Final is a warehouse type of store but this location is also good for regular groceries. Their regular prices are often as good as the sale prices at Ralphs and Vons. They have Costco-type party-sized items without the sales tax that Costco charges. Plus, they have things you can't get at regular grocery or discount stores, as they offer restaurant supplies. Here are the best things I've found at this store: 1) $2.99 organic 1 lb. strawberries (as of April 2016). Really! Most grocery stores will be $4.99 and up. The organic section is tiny, and often the items are sold out due to popularity, but the prices can't be beat. 59 cents for ORGANIC kiwi, 69 cents for one pound of ORGANIC carrots, $1.49 per pound for ORGANIC red delicious apples. 2) $7.99 Mark West pinot noir, and that's regular price! This is one of the best budget-friendly pinots that normally sell for $12-13 at Ralphs/Vons with "sale" prices of $8-9. So yes, they have a pretty nice selection of wines and the regular prices are the sale prices of other grocer stores. 3) Restaurant supply stuff you can actually use. I'm talking about takeout containers for your next party so guests can take food home. Or empty commercial grade spray bottles so you can make your own natural cleaners using essential oils like tea tree. Plus they don't jack up the price. 4) Deals on chips and granola bar/snacks party packs (like 50 one-ounce bags in one box) that are BETTER than Costco. Do the math and you'd be surprised that it's better to buy them here, where you don't need to pay membership fees. 5) Party size microwave popcorn. Microwave popcorn is one of those weird things that cost more than they should in stores but I had to buy 50 bags and it was WAY cheaper here than going to Ralphs. 6) Dairy and eggs at non-inflated prices. I'm surprised that the regular prices are the same or better than at Ralphs. 7) Kraft Macaroni and Cheese White Cheddar 7.25 ounce box. For all of you instant mac and cheese connoseiurs like me, you should know that the White Cheddar version of Kraft's blue box is hard to find and almost never in stores. Not only do they regularly have it in stock here, but it is $1.39 regular price. Much creamier (although not as natural) versus Annie's organic white cheddar mac and cheese. If you've never tasted it, you should try it to see how it is much better than the Kraft blue box Original Flavor! 8) 1 lb organic dry quinoa for $4.99. What?! While Smart and Final is not known for being a champion of organics or that healthy superfood stuff, this price beats Whole Foods and Sprouts where it is NEVER below $6.99. 9) Mega sized hummus. Hummus lovers know that this stuff usually is in a 10-ounce tub which is fine for personal use but for parties you need a 16-ouncer. Lo and behold, they have a bunch of choices here. 10) Fresh meat. After coming here for months I only noticed frozen meats. Then I found they do have fresh poultry, fish and meat at the front near the dairy section...so you really can buy everything you need here. 11) Party size salads (such as one similar to Souplantation's Joan's Broccoli Madness) in the produce section with all the ingredients in one giant tub. Just mix together -- much cheaper than buying it premade from a restaurant. 12) 1-lb roasted cashews for $5.99. One of the best deals I've found around town. Cashews are healthier when they are raw, but these taste so so so good and are still better for your health versus potato chips. 13) Hispanic-friendly ingredients. Need lard for handmade tortillas or homestyle beans? They have it. Unique spices for Mexican dishes? Yes. read more

Price wise they match Costco on grocery items, fresh meats and fresh vegetables, beer & wine, liquor, soft drinks, cleaning supplies, paper goods but unlike Costo no long lines at the checkout. Parking lot is always busy, but haven't had difficulty finding on the outskirts. Clean store that is organized, and never too busy. Fast customer service, perhaps not always the happiest of cashiers but that's not my star-ding... it's the open air refrigerated section. It's a bit concerning that a lot of the items in the open air cooler are not cool to the touch due to overstocking (diminishes cold air flow) so take caution, especially since a lot of those items are raw meats. The staff at this location are ALWAYS nice, professional, and happy to help. My consistently pleasant interactions with the cashiers is what prompted me to write this review. I wanted to let them know they are a pleasure and to keep up the great work! There never seem to be enough lanes open, and often there is only one lane operating. Even during busy times (like Friday evening at 7pm) there will only be one register operating, and the line wraps all the way across the store. read more

Plenty of parking! Seems I start all my supermarket reviews noting that but it's important as I honestly don't have time to deal with cramped or congested lots, I'll just take my biz somewhere else. My go-to predominately for non-perishable/disposable merchandise, sometimes the savings is better than the non-warehouse grocery stores, sometimes not. Weighing in convenience, gasoline usage, my time, Smart & Final often gets my dollar(s) AND it's the only store that carries my all time fave plastic wrap, one roll, 500 square feet seems to last forever and doesn't leave glue residue on glassware. This one is pretty Smart and not entirely Final (but that's a good thing.) I bought an item I didn't need, and returned it easily at another S & F. This is a Smart & Final Extra -- which someday I hope to figure out what's so Extra here. But, things were fine -- some items definitely a better deal (Naked Juices, for instance), while others seem pretty fair. If you know what you want, you're pretty Smart, yourself. And, I'm happy to say, that there's definitely a few items that were more impulsive for me --- but still things I thought I needed. Pricing isn't always obvious, I found, in their produce area. They are now called SMART & FINAL EXTRA! -- and expanded /reorganized their store. It looks similar to other big supermarkets, and so the aisles are a bit smaller. Because theyve gotten busier, theyve hired more staff members, and the last time i was there, the cashier took a while for a price check. But they have most of their old staff who are still cool and friendly and will go out of their way to assist you with getting the item you need. The aisles are all lined up in a very long row on the south end, which means more space for merchandise. I'm hoping they carry more meat suppliers because their selection really limits what I cook. And recently they've stopped stocking on Orowheat's regular fluffy white bread, just the chunky whole wheat/ 7 wheat / country bread/potato bread. read more

Almost 4 years ago July 21st 2015 I was attacked by a Smart & Final employee, not certified to operate a pallet jack by cal OSHA, I am permanently injured. After non stop harrassment & 14 days prior to 2nd court date, I requested mediation paying 1/2 the cost... almost 4 years I wanted it over. The judge at mediation said the smart & final dr. Saved his life as his surgeon... April 1st 2019, I have still not been paid less than medical costs, from my attorney I got the judge's # they only said he handles all smart & final mediation. & they are not obligated to pay mediation agreements for 90 days... I have just been notified that they have contacted my union regarding my ability to work, which I have not. Again told they don't have to pay less then my medical costs after mediation papers signed April 1st 2019... I have been permanently injured & they still refuse to pay. And the mediation Judge that apparently works directly with Smart & final refuses to directly answer my calls, just saying smart & final usually pays... They only had one register open with the light On.They had 2 other lanes open but the cashier didn't have their light on. I was waiting in the line with the light on and didnt get in one of the shorter lines because I thought they were closed. They should turn on their light if their lane is open. The vegetables and fruits always look great, they have a great selection of alcohol and beer, the prices seem very reasonable as well. The general manager of this location deserves to be fired. If it's not bad enough to constantly have (disgruntled/unfriendly) employees blocking the aisles during business hours to stock shelves, you'll also have the privilege of standing in line for 15+ minutes since it's rare to have more than 1 kiosk open here during off hours or 2 during peak hours. Since I live nearby, it's convenient to get here to shop, however, it's normally not worth the hassle. Pleaseeee, review/change your operations to do things the right way and perform the majority of your shelf stocking when the store is closed to customers. You'll do your shareholders better service(profit) if you spend a bit more on labor to operate the right way and sell much more product at a slightly lower margin. The store only allows seniors up to 8:00 a.m. That information is not posted on yelp or the store's website. I found out after walking 20 minutes there, an employee told me after walking in that they were only allowing seniors. I visited this week. Just a heads up to everyone else. Stocked shelves, you don't see them stocking the items all day with the boxes in the middle of the isle. Friendly workers and clean place. I enjoy the place. read more

We have generally gotten good service here, and the cashiers were always going the extra mile to ensure that we were checked out properly. The only hangup I have is that the wait in line is long... but people do buy in bulk here. I would suggest possibly opening up another checkout lane, but that would be entirely up to whoever is in charge, as well as whether or not there is enough customers to do that. Pricing is decent. Why do I come back! Every time I go to this location the lines are very long and slow. The staff doesn't know their products and are usually in the way and won't say excuse me or pardon me or move so I can shop. Also the aisles are almost always blocked with pallets of food waiting to be put away. Also be very careful buying any produce there, it's usually bad, turning bad or just beat up. I spoke to the manager last time I came during middle of day because there were no shopping carts. He told me that someone will collect them from parking lot soon. I said "ok, so how am I supposed to shop." Then one customer who was leaving gave me their cart. What kind of grocery store runs out of carts and then nobody apologized for the inconvenience. Tonight I was waiting in line and there was a price check issue. The clerk called for price check and it was almost 5 minutes before someone came but then he proceeded to huff and puff as he was already trying to put away produce. He proceeded to slam the apples, bananas and everything down onto the Apple section of produce area. So don't buy those very bruised products. He then continued to walk around the store putting away other items while we were waiting. The second cashier was standing there watching and never offered to help ring up the poor people behind me or offer to get the price check. I finally said " I'll go get it for you, I can't keep waiting". Still nobody apologized, offered to help or anything. The only thing this store does well is good prices. Everything else they fail at. So if you want rudeness, slow service, spoiled food, aggravation and piss poor management......this is the place for you. read more

I get that the lines are usually long here, but this is my go-to Smart and Final even though there is one that is slightly closer. This one has adequate parking where I never have to worry if I'll find a spot, and the employees here are cheerful and willing to help out if you ever need anything. It is clean and organized. Now that I think about it, all the Smart and Finals I've been to are clean and organized. I try to go in the late evening when there is no traffic to avoid the long lines or early in the morning before heading to work when there is a smaller crowd. read more

I've been to Smart and Final on a semi-regular basis, mostly because I thought their prices on particular items were pretty good. Other prices are average or more expensive. I went today to pick up a few random things. Skippy peanut butter: regular cost $3.29, Smart Advantage discount - $1.99. Large pitted olives: regular cost $1.99, Smart Advantage discount - $1.19. It was fairly busy at the check out, and my checker was rushing things through as quickly as possible. Before the elderly woman in front of me had even put her change in her purse and moved away from the counter, my checker had already scanned my items, turned the debit/credit machine towards herself, and was asking me, "Debit or credit?" I reluctantly said debit, as I knew I didn't even have a chance to enter my phone number for the Smart Advantage member discount I was expecting. When I got to the end of the transaction, I said, "I need to enter my phone number for the member discount." She replied, "Well you needed to enter that at the beginning." I said, "You didn't give me a chance to though". When I explained that the peanut butter should have cost $1.99 and not $3.29, she quickly refunded my money in cash and put it on the counter. I said, "I don't want a refund, I just want the discount". It apparently became difficult to make this happen quickly, so she had me wait while she took care of the person behind me. So I got to stand around and wait for her to check him out first. I then realized I'd been charged full price for the olives too, and so she refunded that in cash as well. Then she asked for my phone number and did two separate transactions, first charging out the peanut butter at the Smart Advantage price and then charging out the olives at the Smart Advantage price. I just stood by and watched, somewhat confused at how the whole thing was turning out. In the end I had two dollars plus some coins and four receipts, in addition to my initial debit transaction. I understand that she was just trying to move things along quickly, but it would have been much simpler if she had just taken her time. Let me enter my phone number so I can use the discount so I feel like I'm saving a couple bucks. I don't usually make a big deal about $2.10, but I would not have bought those items at Smart and Final had I not been able to purchase them with the "Smart Advantage" discount. read more

Great prices for groceries, baking goods, laundry/cleaning supplies, and generic paper goods. Even compared to Costco, especially if you know you're not going to be using 200 rolls of toilet paper anytime soon. Also nice that this location is open till 10pm Mon-Sat. I'm the guy who shows up at 9 or 9:30 and stays right up until they close. They'll walk up and down the aisles yelling "15/10/5/1 minute till closing" and gradually guilt trip you into getting into the checkout lines. There's also a food truck right in front of the parking lot on Venice, that has a million LED lights, but I never end up going because I realize how much food I've bought. read more

I have to say that living near a Smart & Final and being able to walk over on a whim has changed my mind about the traditional super market. I find myself running over for a gallon of milk, or a bucket of ice cream when I would have put it off before. They have a whole lot of products that I would purchase. They are not always my favorites, or things that I really want or need, but a case of nerd rope sounded like a good idea at the time. The one thing that bothers me are the lines. It can take a while to get out of there sometimes. Once, late at night, there were only two registrars open and ton of people trying to round up party supplies when the people that work there spotted a shoplifter. In front of all the resisters, right up by the front doors, they confront the guy. Of course everyone is focused on the confrontation, including the checkers who kind of stop ringing things up. Before you know it, the shoplifter is making a huge scene, yelling, "Get your hands off of me", "Don't touch me" and someone locks the front doors so he can't get out. Well, nobody else could get out either. So everybody is just kind of stuck there. Nobody is ringing up merchandise anymore. I think someone called the cops, and the rest of us are sitting there thinking, "Do we really need to ALL wait for the cops". As the cashiers slowly start attending to the huge line that has amassed, the shoplifter casually walks back towards the cargo entrance and right out the front of the store. The rest of the us, the paying customers are all kind of looking at our watches, like, "You guys want to open up the doors again so the rest of of can get out of here now too" Never a dull moment in LA. read more

They have nice produce if you don't care about specific things if not organic. Staff in this location are pretty helpful and keeping it real lol . There was this lady who caught this guy rattling the handle to the women's bathroom. She got in his face quick! Plenty of parking and convenient hours if you need to stop by before 8:00 pm. The store is organized and the items are labeled correctly on their shelves. They also have a selection of wines I didn't realize they carry at reasonable prices. Want to save money? The produce/food here ends up being way cheaper than Albertsons ( haven't really compared prices with Ralph's which is also nearby). One time the oranges were selling for $0.47/lbs! Cheapest usually is 0.99, right? The fact they re-invented themselves to sell for the individual as well as for bulk and retailers was great for me. You can't find everything here, but if you want most things for hosting events, catering, they'll have certain party tools you won't find at Albertsons. I could not find plastic serving spoons and mixing bowls at Albertsons. However, I could not find Vegenaise or pumpkin spice at Smart & Final. It's a trade off. At least they are close to each other. (FYI, the plastics arent actually cheaper unless you're buying in huge bulks). You'll find your shopping with a slightly different demographic here, and the lines are usually only crazy after work hours. *hint* Find the lines where the cashier is an actual cashier and not one of the stockers filling in...if you want to be in the fast line. read more

I have to admit, I love this place mostly because it is across the street from my apartment! It's not because I am lazy and don't want to travel far to get my groceries! I don't have parking at my apartment, and it sucks in this neighborhood. So I have to head home straight from work. It is beyond convenient to have a Smart and Final across the street. I also love this place because they have a variety of food that I love to eat. They even started carrying beef and pork! They have the best selection of frozen foods, I love my white castle cheeseburgers! read more
