For approximately two years, my wife has gone to this same Safeway every Wednesday to purchase groceries for her client. She is a professional chef and a regular customer who has consistently used this store as part of her weekly work routine. During her most recent visit, a store employee accused her of shoplifting and contacted the police. She was kept at the store for more than an hour, causing significant humiliation, distress, and disruption to her workday. Most concerning is that, after repeatedly reviewing the store's surveillance footage, it was determined that my wife was not the person the employee believed she was. In other words, she was accused of theft and subjected to this ordeal despite the store's own video ultimately showing that she was not the individual in question. What made the experience even more troubling was the lack of an apology or meaningful acknowledgment after the mistake was confirmed. We are particularly concerned that racial profiling may have played a role in how she was treated. We are not asking anyone to accept an allegation without investigation; we are asking Safeway to seriously examine what happened, including the employee's actions, the basis for the accusation, the handling of the police call, and the treatment of my wife after the surveillance footage established the mistake. This was not a brief misunderstanding. A longtime customer was accused of being a shoplifter, subjected to police involvement, and delayed for more than an hour before the situation was resolved. Safeway customers should be able to shop without being unfairly targeted or humiliated. If an employee makes a serious accusation against a customer, there should be accountability, appropriate training, and a process to ensure that customers are treated fairly and respectfully. I am asking Safeway's corporate leadership to review this incident, including the available surveillance footage and the circumstances surrounding the police call, and to address how an incident like this was allowed to happen. This review is being posted so other customers are aware of what occurred and, more importantly, so that Safeway has an opportunity to address the situation appropriately. The corn on top of ice was super fresh and sweet. At 0.33 cents a cob it was a bargain (Limit 6). It boasted a vast produce and frozen section (heck most areas were huge) and good prices. While it was packed and lines long, they had a ton of register open so the lines moved fast. They also have a small pizza shop selling slices etc. The store only takes cash or debit. The parking lot is vast and we had no issues despite it being Friday at 5PM.
