I am highly dissatisfied with my service today from Smallcakes. I always come to this location so I was taken back by my experience. I asked for a mix of lol dolls for my daughter's birthday cupcakes which was shown to me when I placed the order. The lady that took my order asked me for my preference and I said I would like the mix of dolls. I also did not get a copy of my receipt or the order because the machine was down. I come into the store today to pick up my order and I notice no mix of the dolls. I ask the employee how are the dolls made and she said with a sheet maker in the back. I said well I asked for a mix of dolls and I don't see a mix. She just looked at me as if she didn't understand and I said a mix as in different ethnicities being that my daughter is African American. She tells me oh, I think we ran out.. I placed this order way ahead of time and if it was a problem I should have been notified. I could have found another solution if I had known when the issue came up. I asked who the boss was and she said she didn't know and she wasn't aware of who took my order yet she knew I asked for the mix dolls. I asked for a copy of my order and receipt and she said I have to call "her" but she told me she didn't know who took my order or who the boss was. She then said she would take my info but changed and said she has my order and will call "her" and tell her the situation. I am disappointed and will be finding somewhere else to spend my money. They are very nice, they explained their specials for the day and were friendly! The selection though was not so great. I felt they had a ton of chocolate and the only other different flavors were red velvet and lemon that day (Saturday). I just didn't feel there was anything special about the cupcakes. Homemade cupcakes probably have more flavor. I think "Ooh la la cupcakes" are better and bigger. These cupcakes were moist though. read more

This place is amazing! Probably the best cupcake I've ever had from a bakery/ cupcake shop. I love to bake and these are as good or better than mine. The cupcakes are moist, not dried out like some places. And the icing is perfect not too sweet I hate when you can taste the sugar. Their icing actually has flavor. They're deliciously moist and the variety they have is amazing especially with the changing seasons and holidays, they really mix it up and add new flavors often as specials. I have yet to try one I haven't liked. A must try is the Wedding Cake and Strawberry, they're specials so get one if you're there and they have them cause they're not always available. I just ate a key lime cupcake and I'm not happy that it's all gone. The cake is wonderfully light and flavorful, with a hint of lime, while the icing was sweet, balanced with the tart lime flavor. Can't wait to share Small Cakes with my grand cupcake lovers. read more

The cake was moist and taste freshly made. The icing was not too sweet. The only icing that I didn't care for was on the wedding cake cupcake. It wasn't that it was too sweet it had an after taste that I couldn't shake. The reason I'm giving it four stars is the set up of the place. We were there during a busy time and there was no indication of where the line was to order. The young lady did her best to help us all in a timely manner. Screamed germs at first sight!!! I can't make a full review. My husband and I drove up for a little date night dessert and unfortunately didn't even get out of the car. Curb appeal I guess really does matter! Our first opinion was "distasteful" as the windows had a film of grime and fingerprints all over the door! I have been here 4 times now since they opened ( yes, I am in so much trouble diet wise that I live right behind here !!) . The staff EVERY time I have been in has been so nice. They go over every flavor you ask about , always with a smile, and always very informative. The cupcakes are to die for . It's a mixture of the cake and icing that I love. The cupcake is more of a moist cake than dense cupcake like most places. The icing isn't to sweet and tastes really good. They have ice cream at this location and it is so good ! Every time I have been there, they have asked if I wanted to sample any flavors even before I get to the area that the ice cream is in. Super creamy and very flavorful. They have a rewards program ( and I , no doubt will hit the "free" reward soon !). I used to go to the one on GPKY in Richmond and they were always out of the popular flavors by 6pm. I have been to this location anywhere between 5-7:45 ( they close at 8) and all the flavors I wanted have been available.
