I recently dined at Small Batch (Tom Colicchio's restaurant), located inside the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City. The restaurant has a beautiful, bright, modern atmosphere that feels much more upscale than its surroundings. Based on other reviews, the standout dishes seemed to be the grilled Spanish octopus and the SB Smash Burger, so I ordered both. Unfortunately, the execution fell short in several areas. The East Coast oysters arrived with mignonette but without horseradish or oyster forks--small details, but noticeable oversights. The oysters, octopus, and burger were all tasty, but the presentation of octopus and burger was surprisingly sloppy, as though little attention had been paid when the dishes left the kitchen. The bar also was understaffed. A single bartender was serving both the bar and the entire dining room, which led to waits for drinks. My bartender was friendly, attentive, and worked hard, but one person simply wasn't enough. I finished with the Key Lime Custard, which had what appeared to be a layer of shredded cereal on the bottom. I wasn't sure what it was. The dessert itself was enjoyable, though I think a base of toasted sliced almonds with a few fried blueberries on top of it would have added better texture and complemented the flavors more effectively. One nice perk is the validated valet parking, for a reduced fee, which makes arriving and leaving especially convenient given the mall location. The whiskey selection could also be improved by adding a few more interesting, off-the-beaten-path single malts or blends. Overall, the kitchen shows promise! And perhaps I came on an off night. With better attention to presentation, appropriate bar staffing, and a more adventurous choice of spirits, Small Batch could deliver an experience that better matches its reputation. read more

Nice, and would try again Came here for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The dining area is bright, with a modern-rustic look. The open kitchen is fully visible, and you can see everything happening. And the entire staff, from host, servers, busser and the chefs in the kitchen seemed to all be in a good mood as there were a lot of smiles and laughter. We had the crispy artichokes, the SB smashburger, and the roasted Atlantic salmon. Each dish was good. I wish the artichokes had more seasoning, but the char on them was appreciated. The burger and fries were well-seasoned, and while the salmon was slightly overcooked, it was still tasty. Since the menu changes seasonally, I'm curious to come back and try more. read more

The service here was great - I came for a friend's birthday and they made it extra special with her name printed on the menu & a yummy birthday dessert. Our server was also super friendly and frequently came by to check in on us. The food was decent - I especially liked how juicy the chicken in my friend's sandwich was. The bucatini was also good but as a warning very spicy (we were rightfully warned by our server). The space itself is very large and has an open kitchen concept - it'd be great for large groups but also cozy enough at the tables for smaller groups. read more

What a delicious time! Coming off the highway and selecting a a farm to table spot, J knew I grabbed a great space for my family to dine. All of the dishes had to be ordered all at once, as it is 'small batch', and our server was very helpful and attentive. My only suggestion is to provide a small carb portion for the Fluke dish, and a butter basting of the fish would have helped it stay moist and not dry. I wouldn't depend on the broth to do this. Oh! I visited small batch on a Monday evening, it was quite empty for the most part. The service was fair and the food was good overall, I think it has a nice atmosphere. I enjoyed the espresso martini, I thought the octopus tasted good but was a bit pricey for how much they give, and my friend enjoyed her salmon. Overall I think it could be worth trying! read more

Came in the other day and was surprised to see how beautiful the inside is. Small batch is beautifully decorated inside and has excellent service. For appetizers we had Mac and cheese and the eggplant parm. I felt the Mac and cheese lacked in flavor, I'm not sure what it was missing. I almost felt the same about the eggplant parm app, maybe salt? The eggplant was actually breaded perfectly but coming from my own mom's eggplant parm, this just didn't hit nearly the same. I had the steak frites, while the fries were great and i think the ketchup was homemade or had a twist to it that was great, I again felt like something was missing from the flavor of the steak. My boyfriend had the chicken paillard but I didn't try it. He said it was okay. The star of the meal was the children's cheeseburger, as per my boyfriend's son, they do it the best. All in all, as long as he has a good meal, we are satisfied and he loves this restaurant so who knows, perhaps we'll be back. read more

Wow! What a cute place. Nicely decorated, simple yet modern. The restaurant is also very clean. We came here on a whim to try something new with the kids. I always love an open kitchen in a restaurant too. Kids menu had good choices as well. A bit more pricey than your typical kids menu, but the quality is there. Services was kind and attentive, and there weren't many people dining the night we went. If we were locals this would be more of a usual spot, but well worth the drive on occasion, especially if in the area. Parking by the mall can be chaotic depending to day and time. The restaurant is upscale looking with a pretty cool bar and waiting area. The service is subpar; our waitress wasn't too friendly and was kind of rude to the table next to us when she initially thought they were just there to share apps. The food is also subpar. The raw oysters were okay, but whoever was shucking them needs to go through training again, we found bits of shell in the oyster. The steak frites was disappointing. Although cooked medium rare with precision, the portion was very small. The fries are good. As for the wagyu burger, it was very juicy but under seasoned. The pickles were delicious though. Cookie for dessert was very good. Overall, cool looking restaurant. Service could be better. Food needs some fine tuning. read more

Came here for brunch. Parking was easy. When we walked in they asked if we had reservations. Im assuming it is best to make reservations before you go? We did not have any reservations but were seated immediately. The menu had a lot of options from burgers to healthier options. The food was very fresh. The waiter was very attentive to my daughter. It is definitely a good spot for a group date . I am seeing my girlfriends will love to hang out here. We were just checking the place after a movie date with my girl for future event. We came here for my birthday and it was a great first experience! I made a reservation and we were seated right away. Our waitress, Naomi, was very sweet. They printed "happy birthday" on my menu and I thought that was so lovely! I even got to keep it. We ordered the avocado salad, the bouillabaisse, chicken fingers, and the spicy chicken sandwich. Went to this place a few times in the past and it's been great. Went again tonight after haven't been there in a while and it was just ok. Me and my wife dined here for the first time on Friday night. We both loved the ambience immediately when we first walked in. The Spanish octopus and whipped ricotta toast appetizers were both 10/10s. The Wagyu cheese burger and pan seared cod were both delicious. The only disappointing thing was the cookie skillet dessert. Pros: Love the open kitchen. So nice to see who is making our food. Service was good. Our server, Lily, was precious and friendly without being overbearing. The hot fried chicken sandwich is amazing. It was deliciously spicy and expertly fried. The bun, pickles and aioli completed it perfectly. The accompanying fries appeared to be made in house and were hot and salted well. The pomegranate pineapple mint mocktail was refreshing and pretty. However, It had not a lick of sweetness. But it tasted good. Husband's cod was cooked perfectly. The apple crisp was a very nice portion, served piping hot and the sugar cookie and oat crumble was the best part of the whole meal. Coulda been better- The chicken sandwich could have benefited from a sprinkle of salt when it left the fryer. A demerera sugar rim on the mocktail would have been delicious. Also, more non-alcoholic fun drinks would be most welcome. The Brussel sprouts that accompanied the cod were not hot. They were room temp. And we could not find the apple butter that was supposed to be in that entree. I also got the steamed mussels for a starter- it was a very generous portion and while they were beautiful and well scrubbed, they just didn't taste like much. It needed less fennel, more leek, more salt, and a spoon to gather broth. Only a piece and a half of grilled sourdough (which was SO tasty) was provided for sopping broth. The lava cake was standard and that's being generous. The dark cocoa cookies crumbles were the shining star on that plate. The apple crisp tasted healthy. Like I wrote earlier, the topping was amazing. But neither it, nor the apples, were sweet. Like at all. Still yummy. One starter, one mocktail, two entrees (one of which was just a piece of cod and Brussel sprouts) and two desserts- $129 before tip. read more

Celebrity chef Tom Colicchio of "Top Chef" fame, brings his offering to Long Island with Small Batch. While there is a lot to like with this restaurant situated in the Roosevelt Field shopping mall, there are some missteps. First, the good: The restaurant is gorgeous. The open kitchen is inviting and energetic, yet manages to operate quietly in the dining area. The service was impeccable. The servers could not be more accommodating, even though we had one of the latest reservations of the evening. Second, the not so good: Unfortunately, the food was somewhat underwhelming, especially considering the prices. We ordered the grilled oysters which were the best part of the meal. But for a couple of pricey oysters, it would have been nice to have a good bread to dip into the delicious sauce. Next, I had what was advertised as a starter but served as an entree due to the 25+ price and portion size-- fettuccine with littleneck clams. The dish was mediocre; too much pasta, too dry, and not enough clams. My boyfriend had the pork chop entree which he deemed "eh." The chop was fatty and he said the seasoning was bland. Sitting by the mall at Garden City, Long Island is another well known American restaurant called Small Batch. Their colors are a darker shade of Tiffany's blue, and if Tiffany's ever did a restaurant, I'd imagine it looked like this! The dry aged can be tasted (I.e the funkiness) Kind of like smattering some goat cheese on it. Unfortunately, we asked for a medium rare and I could have sworn the cow mooed a little. 4) Agave Ginger Reviver: Not bad All in all this could've been a great experience. I ate here tonight for the first time The restaurant itself is pretty. Very spacious. I like the open set up, reminds me of nyc or cali dining. I had the ricotta toast for a starter. I did eat my entire piece, as it was edible. However, the flavors really did not mesh well. The dandelion was way too bitter, and the toast itself was a bit burned. Coupled with the extreme bitterness of the weeds served on the bread, the experience was not very enjoyable. I had to remove all of dandelions off of the toast in order to finish my piece. The cod was delicious. The fish was crispy on the outside and flakey on the inside. The plate was presented well, and the colors were really vibrant and inviting! I was actually excited to try it at first glance. The wagyu burger, I was told was very good. The fries were cooked well. Just the right amount of salt. The serving size for a side was also generous. My husband and I tried this restaurant to try something different in the neighborhood and were pleasantly surprised! It's located by Roosevelt field mall with easy indoor and outdoor dining. We ate outside where there are both umbrellas and heaters depending on your weather needs. The free bread was fresh and basic, white bread with salted butter. The pomegranate non-alcoholic cocktail was good but a little too sweet for me. They have a ginger non alcoholic one I want to try next time. The spaghetti appetizer had a decent amount of seafood (shrimp, calamari, and clams) along with artichokes, white wine sauce, and breadcrumbs. The steak frites is perfectly cooked and comes with fries and great chimichurri sauce. We also ordered a side of Brussel sprouts that were perfectly crispy and seasoned. Amazing. The Leche Martini is a must when you stop in . The food was amazing, the mussels I was very much surprised by the flavor. The green mussel dish is very hard to flavor bc it's associated with curry most times. Not everyone can properly cook curry and pair the write breading. This was everything and more. My MIL got the pork chop and smashed. The fries are hand cut and fresh, I love that. The fries are also a meal itself so being mindful if you're getting them. Fries can definitely be shared. The ambience of small batch is spotless and beautiful. Our server was terrific. I had the crispy chicken sandwich, which was simply outstanding. It was served with a mixed green salad that had light dressing on it. That was just delectable. My friend had a chicken Caesar salad with croutons that also was terrific.
