SLO Performance Marine is one of rare businesses, that you just call out of desperation and it turns out they are honest, straight up and display integrity from the get go. We called on our way up the central coast about a boating issue in our motor area of a new boat we have. Alex answered the phone, understood the issue and our circumstances (being out in the middle of nowhere and needing help) and asked us to stop on in. He would check it out for us. Keep in mind the business hours close at 5 and he explained he was busy getting people's rigs ready and doing deliveries - but he would still manage to help if he could. I call back at 4:50 - tell him we are still 30 minutes out and he said he'll be there. - right at 5:20 we pull up at his shop and he sees us (course we're the ones with the boat in tow) - and gives us a quick inspection and honest resolution- although it wasn't anything major, it could potentially be if we don't maintain our investment. He does know his stuff - gave us a quick lesson in understanding areas to maintain and took care of the issue. This is the first negative review I have ever posted on Yelp, but I am compelled to post this immediately. Hopefully this will save someone else from getting taken by this con man. I took my Bombardier Seadoo to Alex at Slo Performance Marine and paid $650. to tune up/carb job on a running Seadoo which is in itself very expensive for the work that was being done. He said the Seadoo should be good for 5 years, which in itself is a ridiculous statement. The Seadoo was put into storage for 8 months. I was able to get it started, but it would not run consistently and the key would not signal. It may be a simple fix, but he had the audacity to ignore my calls after spending good money at his shop. I attempted to call and text Alex several times over the summer and he would not return calls or texts. I sent him a very specific email recently with the invoice and requested an appointment to bring in the Seadoo to check on the problem. Again, he would not respond. A week or so later, I drove from Atascadero to his shop in SLO to confront him for his gross display of customer service. With a smartass attitude, he told me he didn't return my calls because he wasn't really working the business much anymore and I should go somewhere else for service. I will take this kook's advice and so should you. This guy is a straight up con man and I will see him in small claims court. I'm just looking out for the next guy. Don't waste your $$$ here. I am so glad I came across SPM, Alex is amazing when it comes to making your boat it's best. I had a tilt problem and Alex corrected it with a simple fluid upgrade, saved me many $'s. Alex did a great job fixing my Evinrude 4hp outboard engine. It's obvious how much experience he has as a mechanic fixing motorcycles, cars, and marine crafts. Alex is a stand up guy who works harder than anyone I know. He sorted out my (beat to shit) Sea Ray. I inherited this project and got way behind. It sat until I worked up the nerve to bring it in to his shop. He was extremely professional and made the whole experience very easy. That alone was worth the recommendation. He got my boat squared away with some carb tuning, and fiberglass work. I thought the engine was toast, but he found and electrical problem before the carb tune. He took it out for me and it was DIALED when I picked it up. Highly recommend his work! read more

The owner, Alex, is very nice and ready to please, but the lack of attention to detail has caused me to have to bring the boat back and then likely caused another catastrophic failure when we put it back on the water. I took in my 1988 19' Malibu skier in late 2016 after bending the prop shaft on a submerged rock in Nacimiento. They replaced the shaft, but in the process lost my fuel cap, created a large grease spot on my relatively new carpet, and blew part of the large Malibu hull sticker off with their pressure washer. They gave me a non-matching fuel cap they found around the shop, and promised I could find the sticker easily on e-bay. I have had no luck with the sticker. They did, however, discount their work as I had to bring it back to them to get things straight. Additionally, I keep my boat very clean and secure. I have all new seats, cushions, upholstery, floor, and carpet installed a few years ago. I replaced all the hardware with stainless. When I got the boat back, they failed to remount the engine cover to the floor correctly which caused the cowling to come completely off when lifted. Again, they fixed this when I returned it, only they didn't. They put longer screws in, but they were too small gauge and pulled through the stainless finish washer/grommets when screwed down. I gave up and went through the whole boat again, finding a lot of screws that needed to be replaced with stainless, again. They apparently used whatever variety of screws they had as nothing matched anything else. I have done all of the re-furbishing of my boat over the years both mechanical and aesthetic, except putting the skins on the seats, so I know exactly how my boat was set up. When we took it out onto the water finally, it became apparent that I missed one critical item that they failed to secure. The engine compartment blower vent hose, which was secured to stringer screws by tie-wraps when I dropped it off, was apparently no longer restrained. I later found the removed tie wraps in my bilge. The result: the hose caught in the prop shaft, creating 10 feet of expanding hose flailing in my engine compartment and bilge. No big deal, right? Wrong. The hose has a wire that keeps it semi-rigid. That wire wrapped around my prop shaft hundreds of times, and many of those were between the prop shaft coupler and the transmission output rear seal. This caused the shaft to be forced out the back of the transmission, likely destroying the seal, but causing most of the tranny oil to end up in my bilge. So, now I get to have someone else fix my transmission/output shaft connection and troubleshoot if there are any transmission issues. I've called Alex, left a message. He hasn't answered my two calls, nor has he called me back. read more

A few friends and I purchased an old sailboat recently that had an old outboard motor on it. I'm really glad we brought the motor here as they were very honest with us on the condition of the motor and what we needed to do to get it repaired. Trustworthiness is always not easy to find and I'm glad we found it. read more

My friend and I had an "incident" beach launching his boat with a 15hp outboard the other day. We mistimed our launch and had a solid wash right over us, the boat, and the motor. We called Alex at SLO Performance Marine as we didn't know if we could try and restart the motor and salvage our day or call it a day and bring the motor in for some work and cleaning. Alex answered the phone, listened to our story and gave us some excellent advice and instructions. We followed his instructions, got the motor running, salvaged our day, and then properly treated and cleaned the motor when we got home later. Alex gave us great service, was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and ultimately helped us out greatly.
