Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to buy one unopened paleta from Sley, HEY! What to get: A Paleta of your choice, duhhhh. What else: My bum is on the Swedish. Sley Ice Cream might be the best paleta maker in the world. More than that, possibly even in Brooklyn. They make an enormous selection of Mexican paletas (ice lollies, popsicles if you're American), and they sell them all over NYC and beyond. However this little cute store with lovely service is the home of their Paletas, so stop by and try one when you're around! One word of warning: they make really weird paletas too, like Chili flavoured and such! If you're feeling imaginative, go for one of those. If not, just stick to a Passion Fruit or Coconut or some other wonderful concoction. They are absolutely, unimaginably delicious, and a very easy, obvious 5 star rating from me. Having found Paletas in Manhattan ( La Newyorkina ) and in Queens ( Tortilleria Nixtamal ) it was only time that I came across Sley in Brooklyn. Paletas, Mexican ice Popsicles usually consisting of fruit juices and chunks of actual fruits, are one of the specialties at this little shop that appears to be an old grocery store from the outside. From what I've gathered off the internet, Sley's paletas are sold at other Mexican groceries and restaurants but this is the source where they originate from. Staring in through the glass of the freezer, one of the managers (owner?) saw that I was intensely trying to figure out which flavors to get because of the overwhelming varieties of paletas inside ( I was told there was over 30 ). Figuring out that it was my first time there, he suggested that I try the butter pecan. Me while nibbling: This is pretty good. Real creamy and smooth with lots and lots of large chunks of pecans inside. How much is it? Him: $1 each but we'll give you 24 in a box for $20. Me: Nice. So could I mix and match or I could only get one flavor per box? Him: You could get whatever you want. Me: Ok. So that means I need to get 23 more after eating this one. Him: Nooo... that one I give you. Free. That was real nice of him, especially since he gave it to me even before I decided to buy anything. The next few minutes had me picking out the flavors that seems most intriguing. The manager (owner?) was understandably real proud of his paletas and we had a nice conversation about it. The conversation got so deep that I lost count of how many I gave him to put in the box. Me: Um... I lost count. Did I give you 24 or 25? Him: 25 Me: Oh.... Let me put one back then. Him: No. It's OK. I give you 25. What? Wow. I give this place 5 stars for customer service. Between the 3 places of Paletas that I've try so far, this one is better than La Newyorkina which was too icy but not as good as the ones found at Tortilleria Nixtamal which was smoother and have bigger chunks of fruits. The smaller fruits is forgivable in light of the fact that those were $2 each while these are only $1 ( or less if you buy it in a box like I did ). Before I wrote this review, I also tried Strawberry Ice Cream (Fresa), and Mango w/ Chili Ice ( Mango con Chile ). The strawberry Ice cream was creamily smooth with a decent amount of strawberry pieces inside. The Mango w/ Chili was more juicy, icy,and sweet from chunks of mango with a pleasant heat from the chili spices. They both tasted delicious and cooling on a warmer spring day. From my experience, the fruit juice only based Pops are not as good as the milk based ones so start with those. Although most of the ingredients from what I've read on the labels are natural, some people might want to be aware of the fact that they do use food coloring and natural mixed with artificial vanilla flavoring to create some of the Popsicles. ********************************************* Update: Get the coconut flavor and rice flavor if they have them. The popsicles were mad cheap and soo worth a try if you're in the area. They also have mad flavors. I only tried the mango with chili and watermelon but will def come back to try more flavs. The mango popsicle had actual mango chunks but it was a little too spicy for me haha. Watermelon was good. Absolutely delicious homemade paletas! (popsicles). After years and years, they're still $1 dollar a pop! With so many variety to choose from, looking into that freezer brings back nostalgic feelings of myself in a candy store as a kid. My favorites include: Mango, almond, coconut and rice flavor. Dale's description is so perfect, it's hard to add anything more--except to say that these popsicles are really freakin delicious, and really freakin cheap! You can go get a great torta up Fort Hamilton at La Asuncion, and then walk down here and grab a popsicle for dessert. The only downside is that they close fairly early. I'm not exactly sure what time, but I've tried for after-dinner summer popsicles and been disappointed to find them shuttered for the night. Just went to Sley today and got a tamarind chili paleta. DELICIOUS! My husband got an almond paleta which was equally mind- blowing. Another great thing about the paletas is that they are not made with additives, preservatives, etc. The ingredients list is short and straighforward. Dale explained the paleta beautifully and I wish I could add more of the variety of paletas they have there. In addition to Dale and Mary's flavors, I remember pistachio and strawberries & cream, coffee... DEFINITELY WORTH A TRIP. In most parts of the Spanish speaking world, a paleta is something to eat on a stick. Like a lollipop. Or ice cream on a stick. But in parts of Mexico, a paleta is a frozen fruit ice, made with water or milk, on a stick. If you're craving paletas in New York City, as best I can tell, they are very hard to find. However, they are NOT impossible to find. To the rescue steps Sley Deli in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. This isn't quite a deli, it's more a paletería--it even says so on the sign out side. I know I'll be back to add more details and more flavors, but I'll just let you know that I saw several traditional flavors: tamarind, coconut, passion fruit, blackberry, arroz con leche (sort of like frozen rice pudding), guava, jamiaca (made from flowers...you may know it as the basic flavor of Red Zinger tea), and many others. And a few less familiar to me: cookies and cream and butter pecan among them. Three of us went and had a cookies and cream, a milk-based mamey (look up mamey sapote), a passion fruit one, and a mango chili. All were delicious. However, the place I used to get them, the mango chili was sweet. This one was like the mango with chili you can buy from many street vendors in New York--that is, it's salty. I'll be going back to Sley Deli. Each paleta is only a dollar, so it's an inexpensive treat. And there were bins of ice cream that looked really good too! read more

It's really close to the Fort Hamilton D train stop. It's definitely a nondescript bodega type place but the when I walked in I saw a freezer of ice pops and there was a nice woman working behind the counter. She let me know the available flavors and let me taste the tamarind ice, which was delicious. When I asked about the chamoyada, she showed me the syrup and toppings that are used and suggested mango ice and coconut ice cream, both of which were so so delicious and obviously very fresh!! The nice owner/manager gentleman came out from the back and greeted me - I told him how I learned about his shop and showed him the article -- and he was gracious enough to bring me a small cup of his freshly made (and not yet ready to purchase) butter pecan. It was divine. Sweet but not too sweet and not artificial tasting at all. I definitely plan to come back and try some of the ice pops (I saw vanilla, mango, spicy mango, among many other flavors). read more

"Let's blow this popsicle stand." -Mork, from Mork & Mindy Magazine publishing, especially of the food variety, makes things look more considerably more sexy and attractive than they appear in real life (recent Esquire issue with Christina Hendricks a notable exception to this). When I saw Sley Deli referred to in Saveur Magazine, I should have been skeptical. But, I swear to God, if you saw the mango-chile popsicle on p. 19 of their August/September issue, you would lick the magazine like blotter paper, get high off the citrus and spice, and threaten James Oseland to take you to his paleta dealer. A trek to Fort Hamilton Parkway it was. A very unassuming place past the overhead subway tracks, Sley Deli looks like any one of the ordinary bodegas surrounding this area, except they have paletas. They had almost all of the flavors in the magazine, even the exotic ones like passion fruit, jamaica, and guava. I tried the tamarind-chile and the arroz con leche. The arroz con leche tasted like tepid ice milk, with a faint tinge of cinnamon and a mushy kernels of rice thrown in. The tamarind-chile was off: more a frozen bloody mary mix that the funky, citrus taste that I'm accustomed to. Although these aren't well-made popsicles, at a $1 a pop (ha, a pun!), you could probably taste the rainbow for less than a Hamilton. read more

After dinner I was searching for some dessert nearby and this place came up. Mexican fruit popsicles sounds pretty good to me. When I came the fridge wasn't filled with popsicles, but they still had a good amount of flavors. I like mango flavor and found the mango flavor one. They are currently $1.25 each, which is very cheap. There are real chunks of mangos, but I found it too sweet for my taste. The people who work here are as sweet as their creamy concoctions. I can't say I have a specific flavor favorite which is good because that proves I've never been disappointed. This place is a legit hole in the wall and that's how I like it! So hop on the D train and give them a visit then take a nice long walk along Fort Hamilton Parkway to Prospect Park.
