I needed a kind of vacation when I knew I was going to be busy with family all weekend. One where I could unplug after work and be done with everything and have some me time. I have stayed at several hotels in the Johnstown area before and had a range of great to horrible stays. Kind of trying to find the best place to stay while in town when I opt to not be with family. This was basically the only place I had not been to in the area (to note: there are just some that I will not even try). The Hampton Inn in Johnstown sits overlooking Route 219, looking very prominent and close to everything. The reality of it is that when you get off the highway you have to go on a bit of trek to get there. It sits off of the connector road from the shopping plaza to the industrial park. At the end of a cul-de-sac that has nothing else on it. It's out of the way, but still feels connected to everything. I do say, use caution when you exit here. The entrance to the place sits almost at the crest of a hill, almost a blind hill where if you are not paying attention you could be taken out by a vehicle coming the one direction. As for the hotel itself, it is fairly newly remodeled. It has the newer outside look with the abstractness and coloring. Inside gives a welcoming, updated take and allows for things to flow. From the main entrance you come into the lobby area which flows into the seating area for meals and out to the outdoor area where the pool is located. But, if you are me, you used the app to check in before arrival and used the virtual key so you could completely bypass the front desk. When I booked my room, I used the Hilton app and selected a regular room with a king bed. When I checked in that morning I was assured this was correct. However, when I arrived and got to my room, I had a accessible room. I feel like they just put me in this room since I selected a late arrival. I also feel that this room could have been better used for someone that truly needed it. But, what I can say was amazing about the room, and this is probably the top thing, is the proximity to a side door and the parking lot. The bad thing, and this is tops in regards to bad, is that it sat right across the hallway from the housekeeping area where they leave the door open all day while they work and you not only get to hear their music, but smell the laundry being done. Try working from your room when you have music playing in the background from across the hall. As for the room itself, it was decent. Fully remodeled in the sense that everything was updated. With holdovers from things past. The most notable thing was the air unit. It was so far into the room that it acted like a shelf for items and a hinderance when you wanted to close the blinds. Also, it was slow to respond to your choice of temperature in the room. It was freezing in my room for nearly a day before it caught on that the 70 was for warmth since it was rainy and cold outside. I actually had to crank it to 82 for it to kick over to heat for me. Vinyl flooring, comfortable bed, fridge in room, desk space, seating area round out the room. But the bathroom, I was not a fan. With it being an accessible room it felt like I was sitting in a high chair toilet. I'm short, but I've never been toilet short before. And the shower, they tried their best here. I now understand the drain placement in the middle of the bathroom as well as the shower. It did not matter how I positioned the shower head, half the water pooled in the middle of the floor. I had that shower head pointed every which direction I could and that bathmat was no match for the amount of water that came out of the shower stall. The one plus side here was the complimentary breakfast. Each morning it was something different with constant items. Waffles, yogurt, juice. But the hot items would change, eggs one day, omelets the next. Checking out was as easy as checking in for me. I used the app and out the door I went.

The rooms are well-furnished, comfortable, and super clean. Breakfast offers a variety of options and there is a nice seating area. Hotels can't necessarily pick who stays but the clientele here seems to be more white-collar professional which means more quiet, neat guests, the parking lot isn't taken up with work trucks parked over the lines, etc ... there are just no bad surprises that I've experienced. I recently reserved a room and called the day before check-in and made a special request. The morning of my arrival, Linda called to verify my special request to make sure it was met. David who checked me in has worked here for more than two years and is friendly and welcoming as he has been since he started here. The service exemplifies what all hotels should offer but few succeed. If there was one thing I'd like to change, maybe the water pressure upstairs. As it is, it's more than acceptable but the shower and bathroom sinks were spotless and gleaming when I checked so eh ... I can't think of any other hotel I've stayed at that has so consistently exceeded expectations. It truly is a pleasure to stay here.

After the disastrous stay at a nearby competitor I went ahead and booked this place online for my…read moreextra night stay. I am so glad I did as this was miles away from what I just experienced. Because I had booked online I was given whatever room was available when I showed up, to give you a bit of forewarning, I got the accessible room which affords you a lot more room than a typical room you book. I will say that this place did it right. When I lived in the area the Holiday Inn was your typical older style. Then they decided to do a total tear down and rebuild. With them doing so they really made this place one of the newer and nicest places to stay in the Johnstown region. It sits on Scalp Ave. and feels like an island unto itself. Right next to a medical building, grocery store, and small strip mall. The strip mall offers a choice to eat so you really don't have to go far to grab a bite to eat or get in your car to go somewhere. Checking in was a breeze and I got through that fairly quickly. Once checked in I made my way to my room which was off the lobby area. The lobby area is a nice area with ample space to relax and this is where the free breakfast is served. It is bright, clean and just feels fresh. Even though my room was off the lobby area it was easier to get to my room by using an alternative entrance. I was the last room on the stretch of rooms and prior to the staff area. It was quiet in the area for being so near the lobby that I had no idea at times I was near the lobby. As I stated, my room was an accessible room which meant that it was larger than most. But it didn't feel empty. The bed was comfortable, I had a foyer type area where the fridge was located and allowed for me to store items. The bathroom was spacious and the shower was amazing. I was able to relax and not feel like I was being bothered or bothering other people. I can see why this hotel is a used for events when they are in town.

The staff was friendly and welcoming, which made checking in and out a pleasant process. The beds were comfortable, and the room itself was clean, providing a decent spot to rest for the night. I also appreciated the body wash, shampoo, and conditioner dispensers in the shower--a nice touch that's more convenient and eco-friendly than the usual tiny bottles, something I wish more hotels would adopt. However, there were a few drawbacks that kept this from being a standout stay. The pool was a bit of a letdown--it had a strange smell, which we also noticed when taking showers, so it might just be the local water. Still, the pool itself looked a little murky and was definitely in need of relining or repainting to freshen it up. On the plus side, they had a hot tub, which is a rare find in hotels these days and a nice bonus for a quick soak. The breakfast was average--nothing amazing, just standard fare like eggs, sausage, and pastries that got the job done but didn't leave a lasting impression. Overall, the Comfort Inn & Suites was fine for a quick layover, with a clean room and friendly staff, but the pool's condition and the uninspiring breakfast kept it from being more than a middle-of-the-road experience. It served its purpose for our one-night stop, but we'd probably look for other options if we're passing through Johnstown again.

Another part of the cleanliness I'm not fond of is the bath mat in the tub that is glued/taped/ something to the bottom of the tub. That thing can not be cleaned properly. It's stained and I'm sure has tons of bacteria and nasty stuff soaked into it. Lastly, the mattress didn't have a protective covering underneath the sheet. It was simply a mattress pad and a sheet, which made me a little nervous considering the mattress looked very stained just from the sides. However the rest of our stay was very nice, the bed was comfortable, the tv had good channels, and it's a very conveniently located hotel.

I should have listened to my gut when I decided that on a recent trip home I would get a hotel and not come here again. My sister has been married for about two decades at this point and, if anything, this place got worse. First, maybe the only positive about this place, it is cheap. Not the cheapest in the Johnstown area, but cheaper than most. But now, let's get into the rest of it. When I arrived I was going to initially extend my stay by one night. When I checked in I was told that they were booked. Kind of a silver lining moment for me as you will see when I get into it. I have stayed at a few hotels that are on this level, and it's not a level a hotel wants to be at. When you go to book online you are misled that this place has been totally updated and absolutely clean. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes those words are mostly gibberish and lies. After checking in I made my way to the room. I know this is a budget hotel, but it really felt more like a funeral home or church when walking the staircases/halls. The stairs themselves definitely felt like you were taking the stairs in a church. That carpeted, muted creaking sound. Second floor is where the laundry is...in the hallway. My room, yikes. It was very spacious, that is for sure. Almost too spacious and felt almost like an echo chamber. What was updated in the room you ask? The bedding, the picture of a city about two hours away on the wall, the television, the curtains, and maybe the flooring. Everything else, was just here for all those years. The WiFi here wasn't all that great. At one point I had to use the hotspot on my phone to connect. I worked from the hotel room during the day. I had to be mindful of the window situation as well. Even though I was on the second floor, I need to have the curtains closed most of the times. People in the parking lot were still able to see into the room. Then there is the window itself, it needs replaced. The amount of rust (at least I hope it was rust) built up on the window frame made it look like the window was a smoker and stained the white. Then there was the bathroom. This bathroom was close to disrepair. They may have updated the mirror and shower surround, but it was the original counter, toilet and tub. The water pressure was never perfect. Neither was the temperature of the water. If you like fighting a stream of water, then this is you place. Once second it would be freezing cold and the next you would be scolded by the boiling water rushing towards you. But the worst of it all, the toilet. When I first got into the room I noticed there was water damage on the wall and just thought that it had something to do with the years this place has been open and people not knowing how to properly use the shower. But it was the toilet. It leaked the whole time I was here, and probably before I got here. I had already been in the room for a night when on the second the hotel management and maintenance came knocking on my door. They supposedly got a complaint from the downstairs room about leaking in their bathroom. Here, the toilet in my room had been leaking the whole time. Then, I think, they were going to move me so they could close off the room. But they seemed to remember that they told me that they were fully booked and had nothing available. And the words that came out were "Well, you're only here for one more night." And thank god for that. I wanted out of there and am so glad that they didn't have anything available to extend the stay. I can see why this place is the lowest rated in the area. Be weary to book here or you may be in for an unpleasant stay.
